"Alarms and Discursions by G. K. Chesterton: " Publisher: Kindle E-Book Edition: ISBN-13: 978-1-78379-133-0 Alone at some distance from the wasting walls of a disused abbey I found half sunken in the grass the grey and goggle-eyed visage of one of those graven monsters that made the ornamental water-spouts in the cathedrals of the Middle Ages. It lay there, scoured by ancient rains or striped by recent fungus, but still looking like the head of some huge dragon slain by a primeval hero. And as I looked at it, I thought of the meaning of the grotesque, and passed into some symbolic reverie of the three great stages of art. "Publisher: " Catholic Way Publishing. Alarms and Discursions by Gilbert Keith Chesterton Pdf

If Mr. Chesterton had been permitted to have his own way this handful of papers would have been sent out under the title of "Gargoyles." Perhaps the publisher foresaw horror upon the faces of really unimaginative readers when once brought face to face with a "monster" title; so it was changed to "Alarms and discursions," as indefinite and capable of possibilities as one could wish. "Fragments of futile journalism or fleeting impressions," Mr. Chesterton calls his essays. "This row of shapeless and ungainly monsters . . . does not consist of separate idols cut out capriciously in lonely valleys or various islands. These monsters are meant for the gargoyles of a definite cathedral. I have to carve the gargoyles, because I can carve nothing else; I leave to others the angels and the arches and the spires." Forty essays, in which excellent common sense and brilliantly phrased wisdom mingle with sheer nonsense.

Selected Essays by GK Chesterton,Gilbert Keith Chesterton Pdf

The essay is a formidable piece of work. A good one conveys the argument and the author's point of view and persuades the reader that action and their involvement is required. Over the centuries many of our novelists and poets have turned to this form to help society collect its thoughts and decide on a course of action. Today we look at the essays of GK Chesterton. Prolific as a writer of novels and short stories as well as poetry he wrote some 4,000 essays, a few of which we have gathered here.

Alarms and Discursions by G. K. Chesterton Pdf

Gilbert Keith Chesterton, (29 May 1874 - 14 June 1936), better known as G. K. Chesterton, was an English writer, poet, philosopher, dramatist, journalist, orator, lay theologian, biographer, and literary and art critic. Chesterton is often referred to as the "prince of paradox." Time magazine has observed of his writing style: "Whenever possible Chesterton made his points with popular sayings, proverbs, allegories-first carefully turning them inside out." Chesterton is well known for his fictional priest-detective Father Brown, and for his reasoned apologetics. Even some of those who disagree with him have recognised the wide appeal of such works as Orthodoxy and The Everlasting Man. Chesterton, as a political thinker, cast aspersions on both Progressivism and Conservatism, saying, "The whole modern world has divided itself into Conservatives and Progressives. The business of Progressives is to go on making mistakes. The business of the Conservatives is to prevent the mistakes from being corrected." Chesterton routinely referred to himself as an "orthodox" Christian, and came to identify this position more and more with Catholicism, eventually converting to Catholicism from High Church Anglicanism. George Bernard Shaw, Chesterton's "friendly enemy" according to Time, said of him, "He was a man of colossal genius." Biographers have identified him as a successor to such Victorian authors as Matthew Arnold, Thomas Carlyle, Cardinal John Henry Newman, and John Ruskin.

Alarms and Discursions (Classic Reprint) by G. K. Chesterton Pdf

Excerpt from Alarms and Discursions That far more serious problem. I had pur posed to call this book Gargoyles traces of such an intention can still be detected (i fear) in the second essay. Some time ago I tried to write an unobtrusive sociological essay called What Is Wrong. Somehow or other it turned into a tremendous philippic called What's Wrong with the World, with a photo graph of myself outside; a photograph I swear I had never seen before and am far from anxious to see again. Such things arise from the dul ness and languor of authors, as compared with the hope and romantic ardour of publishers. In this case the publisher provided the title: and if he had provided the book too I dare say it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
