“In the wild, something inside me opens to innovation, inspiration, creativity, and imagination. It’s a good feeling, one that leaves me light and full of energy, free to imagine who I want to be in this life. . . . Yet it’s slippery and ephemeral, and I can never seem to pack it out with me.” —Adrienne Lindholm It Happened Like This is, on the surface, a memoir about what it means to live and love in one of the wildest places on the planet. But the love described is not a simple one; it’s a gritty, sometimes devastating, often blood-pumping kind of feeling played out in the rugged Alaska wilderness. In an authentic and honest voice, writer Adrienne Lindholm recounts her move to Alaska as a young woman eager to begin her career in environmental and wildlife studies. She finds herself initially out of her depth among her peers, many of whom are also “Outsiders,” new to the state, but who seem more experienced, more confident. Eventually she finds her way, immersing herself in the rigors of wilderness adventures and building a community of outdoorsy friends to sustain her. Soon she falls in love with JT and gradually, at times painfully, they build a life together and decide to start a family amidst the wild. Adrienne celebrates the many ways in which Alaska, and her outdoor adventures there, inspired self-discovery, as well as revealing her difficult and intimate journey into motherhood. Her love story encompasses the outline of massive mountains on the horizon, viewed for the first time; a caribou moving through an alder forest; the effort to climb a glaciated peak; and the peace that settles when contemplating a quiet Arctic lake. At times, her love—for JT, but also for nature and life—also feels savage, like when she charges onto a glacier alone, or when she shoots, kills, and skins her first animal. With It Happened Like This, readers take an intimate, gently humorous, and occasionally adrenalin-spiked journey into adulthood, and into the depth and comfort of wilderness.

Alaska Taylor is a warm, compassionate lady of faith with above-average intelligence. She believes in things beyond human understanding and she believes that animals can reason, think and communicate. Alaska believes that even if animals can ́t speak to humans, they can speak to each other and they have the same feelings that people experience. She ́s about to find out she ́s right. She ́s about to be introduced to someone who will show her things that nobody else knows. That someone comes in the form of Pedro, a parrot she inherits. Pedro makes her aware that animals are living a completely different life than humans can see. Is Pedro unique? He is probably unique in his ability to converse with a human, but certainly all animals can communicate with themselves and they can convey their thoughts to others outside of their species. Pedro is somewhat superior but still not all that different. He ́s like a little angry high-strung man trapped in a body with wings. Together, Alaska and Pedro take on an evil that threatens the lives of animals living in a zoo. Pedro also helps Alaska to see that transporting animals from the zoo where she works to other facilities is hard on the animals and frightens them. The animals dread having to be relocated to a new home or for medical care that must be provided elsewhere. With this new knowledge, Alaska helps form the service Air Unlimited in order to facilitate safer, faster transportation exclusively for animals. She also endeavors to protect the animals from an evil at the zoo that threatens their lives. It ́s a difficult task and Alaska is unable to let anybody know how she gets her information, but Alaska knows that Pedro is telling the truth and she has to do something.

A personal journey into our evolving relationships with animals, and a thought-provoking look at how those bonds are being challenged and reformed across disciplines We love animals, but does that make the animals' lives any happier? With factory farms, climate change and deforestation, this might be the worst time in history to be an animal. If we took animals' experiences seriously, how could we eat, think and live differently? How to Love Animals is a lively and important portrait of our evolving relationship with animals, and how we can share our planet fairly. Mance works in a slaughterhouse and on a pig farm to explore the reality of eating meat and dairy. He explores our dilemmas over hunting wild animals, over-fishing the seas, visiting zoos and saving wild spaces. What might happen if we extended the love we show to our pets to other sentient beings? In an age of extinction and pandemics, our relationship with animals has become unsustainable. Mance argues that there has never been a better time to become vegetarian or vegan, and that the conservation movement can flourish, if people in wealthy countries shrink their footprint. Mance seeks answers from chefs, farmers, activists, philosophers, politicians and tech visionaries who are redefining how we think about animals. Inspired by the author's young daughters, his book is a story of discovery and hope that outlines how we can find a balance with animals that fits with our basic love for them.
