This lovely catalogue was published following the Timothy Taylor London exhibition of Alex Katz's Coca-Cola Girls series, which ran from November 2 to December 21, 2018. The catalogue transports the viewer into the world of Alex Katz's Coca-Cola Girls, with their transient, balletic gestures and vitality resenting vast images of the paintings' large-scale, "no-noodling," direct application of paint. An essay by Robert Storr establishes the connections between the Coca-Cola Girls series and the Coca-Cola girls advertising from the 1890s through the 1960s is included with the book.
Alex Katz by Alex Katz,Graphische Sammlung Albertina,Kunsthalle Würth Pdf
Alex Katz (born 1927) is best known as a painter--specifically, as a painter of his family and his distinguished circle of friends, including poets, writers and artists. In the early 1950s, he began experimenting with printmaking, but it was not until the mid 1960s that he intensified his interest and production in the medium. Pushing at the limits of various printing techniques, Katz tested out pictorial ideas first conceived for his paintings, retaining planes of matte color but further simplifying his forms and dramatically cropping his images. These reduced compositions were wonderfully compatible with the graphic clarity of printmaking, and by effectively translating his paintings into prints, the artist achieved what he called the "final synthesis of painting." This publication provides insight into an often-neglected yet vital aspect of Katz's work, from the early 1950s to the present day.
"An immensely readable book." – The Guardian "An engaging and entertaining tour through the history of art." – House & Garden "Never has writing about the great artists been so concise, so precise, and so insightful" a–n "The book beautifully mixes…personal recollections and musings with Katz's broader reflections on art history, and his notions of what makes a great painting." This sumptuous volume presents the first full-scale exploration of warhol's tremendous influence across the generations of artists that have succeeded him. Warhol brought to the art world a unique awareness of the relationship that art might have with popular consumer culture and tabloid news, with celebrity, and with sexuality. Each of these themes is explored through visual dialogues between warhol and some sixty artists, among them John Baldessari, Vija Celmins, Gilbert & George, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Robert Gober, Nan Goldin, Damien Hirst, Alfredo Jaar, Deborah Kass, Alex Katz, Jeff Koons, Barbara Kruger, Glenn Ligon, Robert Mapplethorpe, Vik Muniz, Takashi Murakami, Bruce Nauman, Cady Noland, Elizabeth Peyton, Sigmar Polke, Richard Prince, Gerhard Richter, Ed Ruscha, Cindy Sherman and Luc Tuymans. These juxtapositions not only demonstrate warhol's overt influence but also suggest how artists have either worked in parallel modes or developed his model in dynamic new directions. Featuring commentary by many of the world's leading contemporary artists, as well as a major essay by the celebrated critic Mark Rosenthal and an extensive illustrated chronology, Regarding Warhol is an out-standing publication that will be essential reading for anyone with an interest in contemporary art.
Alex Katz emerged on the New York scene in the 1950s during the heyday of Abstract Expressionism and just prior to the explosion of Pop Art, yet his unique aesthetic has always stood apart from other painters of his generation. Influenced by contemporary music, dance and poetry, he has long pursued his own idiosyncratic and decidedly modern form of realism. From his iconic portraits of family, friends, and artistic collaborators to his less well-known landscapes and city scenes, Katz's consummate technique and sensitivity for painterly surfaces unfolds in productive tension with the formal languages of film, fashion, and advertising. Exhibition: Museum Brandhorst, München, Germany (06.12.2018 - 22.04.2019).

Wolfgang Tillmans by Wolfgang Tillmans,Julie Ault,Daniel Birnbaum,Russell Ferguson,Dominic Molon,Lane Relyea,Mark Wigley Pdf
Few artists have changed the manner in which photographic images are made, read, and received over the past two decades as dramatically as German photographer Wolfgang Tillmans (b. 1968). One of the most important and distinctive artists to emerge in the 1990s, Tillmans’s work is internationally recognized for its powerful reflections on the often overlooked objects and moments in everyday life. With images culled from the entirety of Tillmans’s career, this generously illustrated book accompanies the artist’s first retrospective exhibition in the United States and features the potent effects of his portraits, abstractions, and structural and sculptural motifs. Essays by leading scholars examine the context of the German art and pop cultural scene in which Tillmans first began working in the late 1980s; his use of magazines as both venue and source materials; his unique approach to portraiture; his ability to create a sense of intimacy between the viewer and subjects ranging from his friends to cultural figures and heads of state; and his distinctive approach to presenting his images in displays and installations. A fascinating look at the breadth of Tillmans’s career to date, including his most recent new work, this book demonstrates the renowned abilities of one of the art world’s most revolutionary photographers.
National Identity, Popular Culture and Everyday Life by Tim Edensor Pdf
The Millennium Dome, Braveheart and Rolls Royce cars. How do cultural icons reproduce and transform a sense of national identity? How does national identity vary across time and space, how is it contested, and what has been the impact of globalization upon national identity and culture? This book examines how national identity is represented, performed, spatialized and materialized through popular culture and in everyday life. National identity is revealed to be inherent in the things we often take for granted - from landscapes and eating habits, to tourism, cinema and music. Our specific experience of car ownership and motoring can enhance a sense of belonging, whilst Hollywood blockbusters and national exhibitions provide contexts for the ongoing, and often contested, process of national identity formation. These and a wealth of other cultural forms and practices are explored, with examples drawn from Scotland, the UK as a whole, India and Mauritius. This book addresses the considerable neglect of popular cultures in recent studies of nationalism and contributes to debates on the relationship between ‘high' and ‘low' culture.
