Wolfgang Tillmans by Wolfgang Tillmans,Julie Ault,Daniel Birnbaum,Russell Ferguson,Dominic Molon,Lane Relyea,Mark Wigley Pdf

Few artists have changed the manner in which photographic images are made, read, and received over the past two decades as dramatically as German photographer Wolfgang Tillmans (b. 1968). One of the most important and distinctive artists to emerge in the 1990s, Tillmans’s work is internationally recognized for its powerful reflections on the often overlooked objects and moments in everyday life. With images culled from the entirety of Tillmans’s career, this generously illustrated book accompanies the artist’s first retrospective exhibition in the United States and features the potent effects of his portraits, abstractions, and structural and sculptural motifs. Essays by leading scholars examine the context of the German art and pop cultural scene in which Tillmans first began working in the late 1980s; his use of magazines as both venue and source materials; his unique approach to portraiture; his ability to create a sense of intimacy between the viewer and subjects ranging from his friends to cultural figures and heads of state; and his distinctive approach to presenting his images in displays and installations. A fascinating look at the breadth of Tillmans’s career to date, including his most recent new work, this book demonstrates the renowned abilities of one of the art world’s most revolutionary photographers.

Wolfgang Tillmans by Wolfgang Tillmans,Dominic Eichler Pdf

Apart from his seminal portraits, party images, and still lifes that gained him recognition in the nineties, Wolfgang Tillmans (1968 in Remscheid) long ago began dealing with more abstract motifs. In the past decade he has consistently developed his approach to create totally non-representational works that examine themes such as the process of exposure and image supports. From the delicate veils of color in Blushes and Freischwimmer or the sculptural paper drops made of rolled-up photographic paper, to the colorfully compelling works of the Lighter series, the photograph itself--essentially divorced from its reproductive function--becomes the objet d'art, as the book here, designed by the artist himself, impressively demonstrates. --Publisher description.

Freedom from the Known by Wolfgang Tillmans,P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center Pdf

Freedom From The Known is the first book to focus entirely on Wolfgang Tillmans's abstract photographs, exploring the presence abstraction has had within his figurative and representational work. It is published on the occasion of the artist's first major solo exhibition for an American museum--curated by Bob Nickas, who contributes an essay here--which opened at P.S.1 in Long Island City, New York, in the spring of 2006. Of the 25 pieces here, 24 were produced specifically for this project and had never been seen before the exhibition. Most of are "cameraless" pictures, made by the direct manipulation of light on paper, rather than on a negative. At the exhibition, each photograph was presented in a frame, which marked a departure for the artist, who pioneered installation with tape and pins. But he was right: Frames gave these elusive, transitory, abstract images coherence as objects in space, as well as both buoyancy and weight. They were accompanied by a group of figurative photographs from the 1990s series Empire, which made the shift from figure to abstraction by being passed through a photocopy or fax machine, then scanned to the highest possible resolution, turned into large-scale C-prints and framed. A selection of earlier photographs provides a context for Tillmans's passage from figurative and representational imagery to abstraction. Taken together, these more conceptual works reveal the self-reflective impulse underpinning choices of media and topic throughout his work.

Wolfgang Tillmans: Sound Is Liquid by Matthias Michalka Pdf

Tillmans' photographic explorations of human connection and tangibility in dialogue with our new virtual present The observation of people--their bodies, movements, relation to surroundings--lies at the core of the diverse oeuvre that German photographer Wolfgang Tillmans (born 1968) has amassed over the past three decades. Today, these haptic relations and interactions are undergoing massive shifts in light of the COVID-19 pandemic and technological change, as the necessity of social distancing and the migration of everyday life into virtual space transforms how we interact with one another. Wolfgang Tillmans: Sound Is Liquidreflects on the photographer's oeuvre against the backdrop of these societal developments. Accompanying an exhibition at the Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig (MUMOK) in Vienna, Austria, this catalog features a wide selection of Tillmans' work from his early photographs produced in the pop-culture milieu of the 1990s to his acclaimed photographic abstractions, his high-resolution images of the globalized and digitalized reality of the early 21st century, and photos taken shortly before and during the coronavirus pandemic.

Aufwacken by Jens Nolte Pdf

For over 25 years, the German state of Schleswig-Holstein has been the centre of the international heavy metal scene each August. Every year, around 100,000 people make the pilgrimage to the small village of Wacken in order to experience the iconic sub-culture music festival of the same name.Over three days, legendary metal music giants and newcomers meet their fan community. Numerous films and TV documentaries have already attempted to make the fascination of 'Wacken' tangible. The photographer and filmmaker Jens Nolte has now provided a first photo book with a fine selection of unique snapshots and portraits of festival visitors. For four years, he recorded in photos not only the passion and the devotion to music, but also the final moment -- the ravaged site after the festival. As a Photographer I seek the poetic Viewpoint and emotional Core for any Story. I believe in the magic of Light and the perfect Moment to meet the right People in the right Place. -- Jens NolteFeatures an exclusive text by RockHard magazine co-editor, Boris Kaiser.English and German text
