Alistair Cooke at the Movies by Alistair Cooke Pdf

A wonderful entertainment that reflects Alistair Cooke’s love affair with cinema, from his early days as a film critic to his iconic role as the host of Masterpiece Theatre Humphrey Bogart, Fred Astaire, Lauren Bacall, Marlene Dietrich, and Marilyn Monroe are just a few of the stars profiled, along with many directors, in this sparkling and comprehensive collection of reviews, interviews, and essays. Alistair Cooke’s first radio talk at the BBC was in October 1934, and the subject was cinema. He had begun reviewing films in the 1920s as a Cambridge undergraduate. This anthology of his best film criticism and essays includes his many favorite subjects. In “The Symbol Called Garbo,” Cooke reveals the woman behind the enigmatic screen goddess. James Cagney is identified as “one of the few technically perfect actors,” while Charlie Chaplin was “the funniest clown alive.” Shirley Temple’s multi-million-dollar appeal is explained, as is the subtlety underpinning the slapstick humor of the Marx Brothers. Directors such as Frank Capra, Fritz Lang, and Cecil B. DeMille meet with Cooke’s high praise, while Alfred Hitchcock evokes a more complicated reaction. Full of glamorous stars, provocative opinions, and fond memories, Alistair Cooke at the Movies is a very personal and captivating guide to the golden age of Hollywood and beyond.

Letter from America by Alistair Cooke Pdf

A defining collection from Alistair Cooke's legendary BBC Radio broadcasts, guiding us through nearly sixty years of changing life in the United States 'No one else succeeded in explaining to the English-speaking world ... the idiosyncrasies of a country at once so familiar, and yet so utterly foreign' Independent When Alistair Cooke retired in February 2004 he was acclaimed as one of the greatest broadcasters of all time. His Letter from America radio series, which began in 1946 and continued every week for fifty-eight years until his retirement, kept the world in touch with what was happening in America. Cooke's wry, humane and liberal style both informed and entertained his audience. The selection here, made largely by Cooke himself and supplemented by his literary executor, gives us the very best of these legendary broadcasts. It covers key moments from the assassination of Kennedy through to the Vietnam War and Watergate to 9/11, the Iraq War and anticipates the 2004 elections. It includes portraits of the great and the good from Charlie Chaplin to Martin Luther King, Jr, and topics as varied as civil rights, golf, jazz and the changing colours of a New England fall. Each Letter contributes to a captivating portrait of a nation - and of a man.

Six Men by Alistair Cooke Pdf

Drawing on a lifetime of journalistic encounters with the great and the famous, Alistair Cooke profiles the six extraordinary men who impressed him the most Over the course of his sixty-year career as a broadcaster, television host, and newspaper reporter, Alistair Cooke met many remarkable people of the twentieth century. This entertaining and insightful collection shares his unique, often startling personal vision of six key figures from the worlds of literature, entertainment, and politics. They are: Charlie Chaplin, whom Cooke befriended in Hollywood and who courted controversy in his politics and romances; the charming-yet-naive Edward VIII, whose love affair changed the course of World War II; Humphrey Bogart, the first antihero hero onscreen and a sensitive gentleman at home; H. L. Mencken, brilliant, inspirational, and deeply flawed; Adlai Stevenson, whom Cooke labeled the failed saint; and Bertrand Russell, who had the courage and the audacity to try to make the world a better place. The subjects of Six Men are united by the deep complexities of their characters. In balancing informed details of their lives with an objectivity set against the ever-changing landscape of their times, Six Men is a master course in the art of concise biography.

Alistair Cooke's American Journey by Alistair Cooke Pdf

Alistair Cooke, then a Washington correspondent for the Guardian, recognized a great story to be told in investigating at first hand the effects of the Second World War on America and the daily lives of Americans as they adjusted to radically new circumstances. Within weeks of the Pearl Harbor attack, Cooke set off with a reporter’s zeal on a circuit of the entire country to see what the war had done to people. He talked to everyone he encountered on his extensive trip, from miners to lumberjacks, to war-profiteers, to day-laborers, to local politicians – even the unfortunate Japanese-Americans who had been rapidly interned in stark, desert camps. This unique travelogue celebrates an important American character and the indomitable spirit of a nation that was to inspire Cooke’s reports and broadcasts for some sixty years.

Mapping Movie Magazines by Daniel Biltereyst,Lies Van de Vijver Pdf

Movie magazines are crucial but widely underused sources for writing the history of films and cinema. This volume brings together for the first time a wide variety of historic research of movie magazines and film trade journals, reflecting on the issue of using these sources for film/cinema historiography and on the impact of digitization processes. Mapping Movie Magazines explores this debate from different disciplinary perspectives, enlightened by case studies from the use of early film trade press to pedagogical uses of digitized periodicals. The volume explores Hollywood’s grip on movie magazines, gender in film journalism, typologies of unknown trade press and movie magazine markets, and subversive Tijuana bibles.

The New Biographical Dictionary of Film by David Thomson Pdf

Thomson (independent scholar), writing of The Biographical Dictionary of Film (aka A Biographical Dictionary of the Cinema, 1975 edition), described it as "a personal, opinionated, and obsessive biographical dictionary of the cinema." Thirty-five years and several editions later, that description still holds true of this expanded work. The new dictionary summarizes salient facts about its subjects' lives and discusses their film credits in terms of the quality of the filmmakers' work. In ambition it has competitors, including Leslie Halliwell's various editions of Halliwell's Filmgoers Companion (12th ed., 1997) and Halliwell's Who's Who in the Movies, edited by John Walker (4th ed., rev. and updated, 2006), which cover films and technical terms (categories not included in Thomson's), but whose entries are neutral and exceedingly brief. Additionally, Francophile Richard Roud's edited Cinema: A Critical Dictionary: The Major Filmmakers (2 v., 1980) is as passionate a work as Thomson's, but narrower in scope, with entries written by various experts, rather than only by Roud. Finally, the multivolume magnum opus The International Dictionary of Films and Filmmakers (4th ed., 2000, ed. by T. Pendergast and S. Pendergast; 2nd ed., ed. by N. Thomas, v. 1, CH, May'91; 1st ed., ed. by C. Lyon, v.1-2, CH, Jan'85, v.3, CH, Apr'87, v.4-5, CH, Jun'88) covers everything--films, directors, actors, writers, and production artists--with generous, measured, scholarly entries and lavish illustrations. However, it looms large and heavy, unlike the handy one-volume work by Thomson. Arguably, Thomson's work, for its scope, is the most fun, the most convenient, and the most engaging title. All libraries supporting people interested in film should buy it. It will get lots of use and provide very good value for the money. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Douglas Fairbanks and the American Century by John C. Tibbetts,James M. Welsh Pdf

Douglas Fairbanks and the American Century brings to life the most popular movie star of his day, the personification of the Golden Age of Hollywood. At his peak, in the teens and twenties, the swashbuckling adventurer embodied the new American Century of speed, opportunity, and aggressive optimism. The essays and interviews in this volume bring fresh perspectives to his life and work, including analyses of films never before examined. Also published here for the first time in English is a first-hand production account of the making of Fairbanks’s last silent film, The Iron Mask,/i>. Fairbanks (1883–1939) was the most vivid and strenuous exponent of the American Century, whose dominant mode after 1900 was the mass marketing of a burgeoning democratic optimism, at home and abroad. During those first decades of the twentieth century, his satiric comedy adventures shadow-boxed with the illusions of class and custom. His characters managed to combine the American Easterner’s experience and pretension and the Westerner’s promise and expansion. As the masculine personification of the Old World aristocrat and the New World self-made man—tied to tradition yet emancipated from history—he constructed a uniquely American aristocrat striding into a new age and sensibility. This is the most complete account yet written of the film career of Douglas Fairbanks, one of the first great stars of the silent American cinema and one of the original United Artists (comprising Fairbanks, Mary Pickford, Charles Chaplin, and D. W. Griffith). John C. Tibbetts and James M. Welsh’s text is especially rich in its coverage of the early years of the star’s career from 1915 to 1920 and covers in detail several films previously considered lost.
