Alaskan-type ultramafic-mafic complexes in British Columbia are potential hosts for commercially exploitable deposits of platinum group elements (PGEs). Such complexes are named for a distinctive suite of intrusions distributed along a narrow, northerly trending belt 600 kilometres long in south-eastern Alaska. All Alaskan-type complexes in British Columbia lie within the allochthonous terranes of the Intermontane Belt that were amalgamated and accreted to the cratonic margin of ancestral North America in the Mesozoic. This report examines the geology and PGE/noble metal geochemistry of eight specific complexes, providing information on regional geology and geochronology, structure, metamorphism, petrography, geochemistry, and mineralization. It then discusses PGE mineralization, using the Tulameen Complex and associated placers as a case study, and examines the economic potential of the complexes and their magmatic and tectonic settings.

This paper presents the results of a detailed investigation of the tectonic setting and origin of ultramafic and related rocks in the Atlin area. The Atlin area was selected for detailed study because of its excellent road access, the large number of listwanite-related lode gold occurrences, and the extensive exploration database available for many of these occurrences. Following detailed mapping of the ultramafic rocks underlying the town of Atlin and Monarch Mountain in 1989, the area was revisited in 1990 and the map area extended to establish tectonic relationships between the ultramafic and surrounding lithologies. The phase chemistry of the harzburgite and associated dunite were investigated and are used to establish the origin of the units. Whole-rock major, trace, and rare-earth element chemistry is presented for basaltic rocks spatially associated with the ultramafics. These data are used to place constraints on the paleotectonic eruptive setting of the unit and to model the character of the mantle source from which the rocks were derived.

The Sphaler Creek and Flood Glacier map areas comprise the Galore Creek area, located within the Coast Mountains between the Stikine River and Mess Creek. The large tonnage Galore Creek alkaline porphyry copper-gold-silver deposit is located within the area mapped. Results of regional mapping and sampling in 1988 are summarized in the report. This report and accompanying maps incorporates new data and revisions to the 1:50 000 geology and mineral occurrence map. Phoscorites are dark, often very handsome, sometimes economically valuable, magnetite-apatite-silicate rocks, almost always associated with carbonatite. They are key to understanding the longstanding question of how carbonate and carbonate-bearing magmas rise to the crust and the Earths surface. Despite this, they have been given little attention; a search on geological literature databases will produce thousands of references to carbonatite (up to 4125 on Georef) but not more than thirty references to phoscorite. This book goes some way to redress this balance. Over recent years many European and North American scientists have studied Kola rocks in collaboration with Russian colleagues. The idea for this book came from one such project funded by the European organisation, INTAS (Grant No 97-0722). The Kola Peninsula is one of the outstanding areas in the World for the concentration and economic importance of alkaline rocks. However, Russian work on the Kola complexes is still relatively unknown and a particular aim of this book, as well as presenting current research, is to make this knowledge accessible to English language readers. A large exploration programme on Kola alkaline rocks was active from 1950 to 1990 and involved teams of geologists who studied many kilometres of drill core and carried out detailed mineralogical and petrological studies.

Skarns in British Columbia have historically been important sources of iron, tungsten, copper, and gold. This publication begins with an introduction on skarn terminology and the problems of skarn identification. It then reviews a genetic model of skarn formation and presents descriptive profiles of eight types of skarn deposits; describes the database of at least 735 skarn occurrences in the province, and the number and distribution of skarns in British Columbia according to their associations, class, age, and distribution; and notes the ages of British Columbia skarns and the total production of various metals extracted from British Columbia skarns.
