Alternative Pentatonics by Graham Tippett Pdf

I actually wrote this book as a practice guide for myself because I wanted a way to get different and outside sounds using pentatonic scales, as well as to improve my chops and have a huge variety of new sounds at my fingertips to play over the chords you see 90% of the time such as major/major7, minor/minor7, and dominant chords, among others. As well as being a scales book Alternative Pentatonics is also a method to practice improvising over common chords using uncommon groups of five notes. Five notes are somewhere between an arpeggio and a scale, as well as being the ideal number of notes to craft some really nice phrasing (in my opinion), as I’m sure you realized when you first learned your minor pentatonic scale and started jamming over a 12-bar blues. This book contains 28 new pentatonic scales divided into chord types so that you’ll know exactly what chords you can use them over. For the intermediate player: this book will give you plenty of new and interesting options for playing over common chords and force you out of standard pentatonic scales and/or the major scale modes. For the more advanced player: this book could be more about exploring possibilities than learning scale patterns; in fact, I would suggest that advanced players avoid even remembering the patterns in this book. Instead, they can be used to explore the improvisational terrain and find new sounds, then filed away in your subconscious and allowed to seep into your playing while you’re in the throes of improvisation. So, if you’re stuck in a soloing rut or are looking for new sounds, outside sounds, exotic sounds, or even a few downright weird sounds, this is the book for you.

Beyond Pentatonics by Graham Tippett Pdf

A lot of students ask me how they can take their improvisation skills to the next level and move beyond pentatonic scales and into modes and arpeggios. My response is to tell them not to abandon pentatonic scales in favor of modes and other soloing devices, but to use them as a springboard and a solid foundation from which to expand their harmonic awareness. If you play rock, blues and even jazz, you’ll be using pentatonic scales for the rest of your life, so there’s no need to discard them! In this book, we’ll be using the much-loved minor pentatonic scale as the basis for learning and having a quick way to access the modes of the major scale, as well as the basic seventh chord arpeggios. This means that when you go to improvise, you'll have a vast array of options with which to go beyond pentatonic soloing. Work through this book daily and I guarantee you a smooth and painless transition from pentatonics to incorporating modes and arpeggios into your playing.

Guitar Hacks by Graham Tippett Pdf

3NPS (three-note-per-string) scales, as used by legions of guitarists but popularized mainly by Joe Satriani, are one of the most efficient ways to navigate the fretboard and get your scales down IF you follow the guidelines in this book. As the name suggests, a 3NPS scale is any scale that contains three notes on each string, and as you'll see in this eBook, this makes for a very consistent way to map out scales on the guitar fretboard. What we’ve done here is revamped the 3NPS scale system and turned it into an incredibly effective means to learn a wide variety of scales all over the fretboard by streamlining the number of patterns, as well as the picking system. This is not a scale theory book, and contains no pentatonic scales. This is a quick and dirty (and very effective) method for learning 3NPS scales all over the fretboard; something to work on in the woodshed. It will improve your picking technique and speed. It does not require a great amount of thinking as you only need to learn two picking patterns, which is really one in two directions, and only three scale patterns instead of the usual seven per scale.

Woodshedder's Guide to Guitar Scales by Graham Tippett Pdf

The Woodshedder's Guide to Guitar Scales came about after a request from a student. Obsessed with scales, she wanted a practice regime that allowed to her to learn a considerable number of guitar scales all over the fretboard using the most efficient and least time-consuming method I could come up with. To accomplish this, I suggested using just three patterns per scale, all of which are derived from three master patterns. In essence, we bypassed traditional (and outdated) scale systems that have you learning anything from five to seven or more patterns per scale (as this is both time-consuming and unnecessary) and grouped scales in a way that makes them far easier to digest, woodshed, and have the results show up in your playing relatively quickly. Don't get me wrong, this isn't a shortcut, it's simply a very efficient method if you're willing to spend hours in the woodshed. In this guide we dispense with traditional concepts to give you the most efficient and effective way to not only learn a ton of scales, but to achieve levels of technique and precision that will serve you for years to come.

MBGU Rock Curriculum: Fluid Pentatonics, Book 2 by Tim Quinn Pdf

Fluid Pentatonics for Guitar: 84 Melodic Studies for Rock Guitar is a comprehensive manual for developing blistering pentatonic motion that moves freely over the entire fretboard, using position-shifting slides, hammer-ons, and pull-offs for speed and fluidity. Emphasis is on overcoming the restrictive nature of traditional pentatonic box scale fingerings by developing pathways that continually shift between and connect the five pentatonic "boxes". Complete whole-neck control is developed through an extensive series of repeating melodic exercises and etudes. Section One presents 35 sequential whole-neck studies, each of which spans the range of twelve frets, thus unlocking virtually every possible position shift. Section Two develops complete non-shifting control through a series of 15 interesting and useful sequential patterns, applied to each of the five pentatonic boxes. Section Three presents 10 whole-neck/position-shifting studies that are non-sequential in design, in order to develop unpredictable melodic flow. Then, in Sections Four and Five, two vital extensions/variations of the pentatonic scale are fully explored; the Hexatonic and Dominant Pentatonic scales. The result is a complete matrix of pentatonic moves and connections that allow the guitarist to float freely across the entire fretboard without being locked into any single particular pentatonic box. the resulting sound is definitely NOT bluesy (very little string bending), but closer to a modern jazz-rock fusion style; fluid and unpredictable. Great for all guitarists in rock, jazz, fusion, blues, country, and pop styles who want to unlock complete whole-neck freedom and develop a fast, modern pentatonic sound. CD included.Presented in standard notation and tablature.

Scale Fluency by Graham Tippett Pdf

Scale Fluency – Pentatonics will give you the complete picture for any pentatonic scale across the entire guitar neck. In essence, it’s a practice method that ties all those loose ends together that you may have picked up from other scale systems such as the CAGED and/or the incomplete ‘five shapes’ approach. It will also bring to life any scale theory you’ve learned as you’ll start to see the big picture, rather than unrelated bits of information that lead to many gray areas on the neck. This book, as well as being a complete scales practice method, presents a subtle but deeper take on pentatonic scales that most guitarists overlook. For the beginning to intermediate guitarist, pentatonic scales provide a very effective springboard into soloing, but what tends to happen is that these players quickly become tired of the scale and feel they have to move on to something else like modes to play better solos. This is not the case as what they should do is look deeper into the structure of the pentatonic scale and approach it in a more melodic way, which is what we’ll do in this book. You’ll see the pentatonic major and minor scales, which are really one entity, as they relate to chords and keys, and you’ll hear and see those famous five patterns in an entirely different way. With consistent practice the combination of logical horizontal and vertical patterns will allow you to improvise using pentatonic scales in a more satisfying, confident, and melodic way.

He breaks down the practice of improvisation to its smallest building blocks, and is careful to relate each lesson to real-life examples from the jazz canon....This book will be excellent for jazz beginners, players of other instruments who wish to bone up on their piano skills, and advanced improvisers may find ways to fill in gaps in their skill sets " - Mark Shilansky, pianist/composer, professor, Berklee College of Music “Jeremy’s book is a reflection on who he is as a pianist - a true artist who has done his homework. Pentatonic Soloing System by Graham Tippett Pdf

This book gives you a system to solo over simple and complex chord changes right from day one using the pentatonic major and minor scales you probably already know. Instead of just wailing over backing tracks using a single pentatonic scale, I want to show you how to easily apply a pentatonic scale to each chord to be able to pull off a well-crafted, melodic solo that makes you sound like you know exactly what you're doing in virtually any situation. This is a very simple method and a solid basis for learning how to improvise; it’s a great one for beginner and intermediate guitarists alike as it doesn’t require a lot of in-depth theory to be able to put it into practice.
