Queer sexualities in Indian Culture : Critical Responses by Dipak Giri Pdf

The anthology Queer Sexualities in Indian Culture: Critical Responses surveys the queer (LGBTQIA+) space in Indian culture in reference to literature, movies and other important media of culture. Shedding light on the marginalised position of queer in Indian culture, the anthology seeks sympathy for this minority class of people from majorities. It traces out factors like gender stereotype, body politics, prejudism etc. causing these minorities to lead a life of invisibility. Along with a critical introduction and an interview with queer activist and author Ruth Vanita, the anthology has covered sixteen well-explored articles through which authors have tried to sincerely articulate their noble ideas on queer studies in Indian context. The book will be helpful not only for readers who want to know about Indian queers but also prove resourceful to scholars who intend to do further studies on it.

A People Stronger by Suneeta Singh,Sangita Dasgupta,Pallav Patankar,Minati Sinha Pdf

The discourse on sexuality and alternate sexualities in India's public space has grown in volume, and those who practice same-sex relations have become more visible. Among these are the MSM (men who have sex with men) and TG (transgender) groups. A People Stronger provides a comprehensive analysis of the collectivization efforts of these groups in India. The book describes the journey of a marginalized closeted community and its gradual assumption of a place within society, providing compelling examples of social action. Further, through its description of the 'coming out' of the insular society of hijras, it provides useful insights into real-world acculturation. The book is also a riveting history of these communities in India from pre-Vedic times to the present. The fundamental principle guiding this work is that sexual minority groups must get acceptance within the framework of India's constitution of their existence as citizens of the country, equal in dignity and in rights, having the same sovereignty as other citizens and of the same realization of their social identities.

Sakhiyani by Giti Thadani Pdf

The product of many years of research, this unique book presents fascinating perspectives on contemporary lesbian life in India and unravels some of the history of lesbian desire from centuries past. Through detailed examination of mythology, cosmology, ancient art and artefacts and her exegesis of ancient Sanskrit texts, Thadani constructs a tapestry of feminine kinship, genealogy and sexual or erotic bonding between women (sakhiyani) in ancient India. The author offers an historical perspective on the effect of colonization upon lesbian identities in India, showing how women were viewed by Western imperialists either as soft victims or as sexually dangerous, possessing an overgrown clitoris and in need of heterosexual domestication. The second half of the book focuses on contemporary lesbian realities and issues, including lesbian marriages, suicide pacts, forging lesbian space, lesbian human rights, lesbophobia, sexual exile and the different construction of gender, family and possible kinship alliances.

Intimate Others by Samita Sen,Ranjita Biswas,Nandita Dhawan Pdf

Although the challenge to the hegemonic status of the institution of marriage in India is grabbing the limelight in popular media, it has received comparatively less attention in the social sciences. This path-breaking collection presents an analysis of marriage from historical, social, cultural, psychological and legal perspectives. Some of the essays argue that marriage continues to retain its prime overwhelming importance in reproducing the social order and its claim to be the only legitimate structure of the family rather than one among many. Nevertheless, changes wrought by globalisation, by information technology and by the increasing social visibility of queer life forms and practices have had considerable impact on the homogeneous imagination of the 'Indian family', with the traditional marriage system as its base. The essays in this collection look behind and beyond the institutional framework of marriage to critique the structures of our everyday lives and to explore new horizons and possibilities in the domain of the intimate. The collection is divided into four parts, moving from a historical perspective to present-day concerns: Part I - 'Historicising Mar-riage: Marriages Are Made in Scriptures'; Part II - 'Contextualizing Marriage: Class, Caste, Masculinity and Violence'; Part III - 'Repre-senting Marriage: Sex, Conjugality and Videotapes' and Part IV - 'Recasting Marriage: Singlehood, Coupledom and Intimate Others'.

Two Spirit People by Lester B. Brown Pdf

Two Spirit People is the first-ever look at social science research exploration into the lives of American Indian lesbian women and gay men. Editor Lester B. Brown posits six gender styles in traditional American Indian culture: men and women, not-men and not-women (persons of one biological sex assuming the identity of the opposite sex in some form), and gays and lesbians. He brings together chapters that emphasize American Indian spirituality, present new perspectives, and provide readers with a beginning understanding of the place of lesbian, gay, and bisexual Indians within American Indian culture and within American society. This beginning will help you understand these unique people and the special challenges and multiple prejudices they face. Traditionally, American Indian cultures showed great respect and honor for alternative gender styles, since these were believed to be part of the sacred web of life. If the Great Spirit chose to create alternative sexualities or gender roles, who was bold enough to oppose such power? If one's spiritual quest revealed one's identity to be that of not-woman, not-man, gay, or lesbian, who should defy their calling? The interpretation of contemporary American Indian religions that gay American Indians retain sacred rights within Indian cultures, and that they can share this gift with others, have implications for therapy, identity formation, social movements, and general human relations. Social workers and other human service professionals, American Indian studies students, sociologists, anthropologists, and lesbian and gay scholars will find Two Spirit People enlightening and a significant contribution to the development of professional interventions for oppressed groups that is ethnically and culturally sensitive. Only by understanding the belief systems from which these oppressed groups come will you begin to really help them achieve positive change. You will become better equipped to specifically help gay and lesbian American Indians as you gain insight into: American Indian alternative gender styles social service issues for American Indian lesbians and gay men American Indian not-men and not-women and their choosing ceremonies American Indian lesbian and gay identity development American Indian lesbian and gay literature AIDS and American Indians Two Spirit People helps you see that family and community acceptance of lesbians and gays is possible. The families of American Indian lesbians and gays do not usually abandon them, thus helping them face a generally unaccepting American milieu. Looking to this book and the American Indian perspective of alternative sexuality/gender styles, American society as a whole can begin to take a new approach to the treatment and understanding of other groups traditionally held to the “outside” of American mainstream society.

Queer Asian Cinema by Andrew Grossman Pdf

Explore queer themes in films from Hong Kong gangster flicks to Bollywood melodramas! Although Asian films have reached a new height in popularity worldwide, Queer Asian Cinema: Shadows in the Shade is the first full-length book in English solely devoted to examining the aesthetics and politics of homosexuality in Asian films. This unique book presents multiple points of view on the portrayal of gay, lesbian, and transgendered people in film throughout Asia. From the subversive sadomasochism of Japan's ”pink films” to the hard-boiled world of Hong Kong's gangster movies, Queer Asian Cinema analyzes and discusses attitudes toward homosexuality in the full spectrum of Asian film. In addition to studies of the representation of identified gay men, lesbians, and transgendered individuals, it reveals the hidden homoerotic subtext of otherwise conventional films. Queer Asian Cinema: Shadows in the Shade examines diverse aspects of Asian films, including: the political and psychological links between feudal and sadomasochist hierarchies the inevitable punishment of homoerotic bonds in gangster films the integration of the homosexual couple into the Confucian family structure in Korean films the complexities of cross-gender casting the differences between transvestism and cross-dressing the definition of male genitalia as obscene Queer Asian Cinema: Shadows in the Shade brings together experts in both film-making and movie criticism, providing a balanced viewpoint to unite the worlds of academic and popular perceptions on this subject. It opens an exciting discussion of this important and largely neglected area of cinematic discourse.

Deconstructing the Stereotype: Reconsidering Indian Culture, Literature and Cinema by Kaustav Chakraborty Pdf

Stereotypes are mere 'pictures in our heads'. Prejudice and suspicion against all that is perceived of as ‘different’ give rise to cultural stereotypes. Creating stereotypes also involves connecting the created categories with values, equipping the categories with an ideational label. Thus, stereotypes often contain the presupposition that one’s own group represents the normal, or even universal and that one’s own culture and ist socially construed concepts of reality is superior and normative in relation to other cultures and world-views. The stereotypes are not just one person’s private attitude but are always shared with a larger socio-cultural group. Stereotypes result in simplifications that prevent people from seeing the ‘otherized’ individuals as they truly are. This book, aims at transgressing the boundaries of the strategically generated stereotyped image of a homogenous Indian culture. Rather, by highlighting the marginalised issues related to class, caste and gender, this book, by citing examples of select Indian literary and cinematic representations, argues that the stigma related to the non-conformist /alternative/minority identities, is baseless and fraudulent.
