The North American Arctic by Dwayne Ryan Menezes,Heather N. Nicol Pdf

The North American Arctic addresses the emergence of a new security relationship within the North American North. It focuses on current and emerging security issues that confront the North American Arctic and that shape relationships between and with neighbouring states (Alaska in the US; Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut in Canada; Greenland and Russia). Identifying the degree to which ‘domain awareness’ has redefined the traditional military focus, while a new human rights discourse undercuts traditional ways of managing sovereignty and territory, the volume’s contributors question normative security arrangements. Although security itself is not an obsolete concept, our understanding of what constitutes real human-centred security has become outdated. The contributors argue that there are new regionally specific threats originating from a wide range of events and possibilities, and very different subjectivities that can be brought to understand the shape of Arctic security and security relationships in the twenty-first century.

Australian Native Title Law by Stephen Lloyd,Melissa Perry Pdf

Australian Native Title Law Second Edition annotates the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth) and analyses the common law principles applicable to native title. It explains the essential concepts and principles which underpin it, including relevant principles of constitutional, property and discrimination law, referencing a range of relevant authority and materials. The First Edition published in 2004 and was comprised of introductory explanatory chapters followed by a detailed annotation to the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth) and extensive reforms made in 1998 in light of the Wik decision. Since that time, some 27 amending Acts have come into force. The much-awaited Second Edition builds upon these foundations by bringing the Act up-to-date and providing detailed commentary on the more important of these amendments, in particular the Native Title Amendment Act 2007, the Native Title Amendment (Technical Amendments) Act 2007 and the Native Title Amendment Act 2009. The book now draws upon over 1,000 cases, including leading recent High Court decisions such as Queensland v Congoo (2015), Western Australia v Brown (2014), Karpany v Dietman (2013), and Akiba v Commonwealth (2013). Significant contributions from leading practitioners in the field are included, with a new section addressing proof of native title. Both new and experienced practitioners, decisions-makers, academics and students alike will find Australian Native Title Law Second Edition of invaluable assistance.

Emotion, Reason, and Action in Kant by Maria Borges Pdf

This book is open access and available on www.bloomsburycollections.com. It is funded by Knowledge Unlatched. Though Kant never used the word 'emotion' in his writings, it is of vital significance to understanding his philosophy. This book offers a captivating argument for reading Kant considering the importance of emotion, taking into account its many manifestations in his work including affect and passion. Emotion, Reason, and Action in Kant explores how, in Kant's world view, our actions are informed, contextualized and dependent on the tension between emotion and reason. On the one hand, there are positive moral emotions that can and should be cultivated. On the other hand, affects and passions are considered illnesses of the mind, in that they lead to the weakness of the will, in the case of affects, and evil, in the case of passions. Seeing the role of these emotions enriches our understanding of Kant's moral theory. Exploring the full range of negative and positive emotions in Kant's work, including anger, compassion and sympathy, as well as moral feeling, Borges shows how Kant's theory of emotion includes both physiological and cognitive aspects. This is an important new contribution to Kant Studies, suitable for students of Kant, ethics, and moral psychology.

#identity by Abigail De Kosnik,Keith Feldman Pdf

Since its launch in 2006, Twitter has served as a major platform for political performance, social justice activism, and large-scale public debates over race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and nationality. It has empowered minoritarian groups to organize protests, articulate often-underrepresented perspectives, and form community. It has also spread hashtags that have been used to bully and silence women, people of color, and LGBTQ people. #identity is among the first scholarly books to address the positive and negative effects of Twitter on our contemporary world. Hailing from diverse scholarly fields, all contributors are affiliated with The Color of New Media, a scholarly collective based at the University of California, Berkeley. The Color of New Media explores the intersections of new media studies, critical race theory, gender and women’s studies, and postcolonial studies. The essays in #identity consider topics such as the social justice movements organized through #BlackLivesMatter, #Ferguson, and #SayHerName; the controversies around #WhyIStayed and #CancelColbert; Twitter use in India and Africa; the integration of hashtags such as #nohomo and #onfleek that have become part of everyday online vernacular; and other ways in which Twitter has been used by, for, and against women, people of color, LGBTQ, and Global South communities. Collectively, the essays in this volume offer a critically interdisciplinary view of how and why social media has been at the heart of US and global political discourse for over a decade.

Alloy Steel by Eduardo Valencia Morales Pdf

The sections in this book are devoted to new approaches and usages of stainless steels, the influence of the environments on the behavior of certain classes of steels, new structural concepts to understand some fatigue processes, new insight on strengthening mechanisms, and toughness in microalloyed steels. The kinetics during tempering in low-alloy steels is also discussed through a new set-up that uses a modified Avrami formalism.
