Excerpt from American Journal of Archaeology and of the History of the Fine Arts, 1889, Vol. 5 But above the wall of Kimon, which is built with massive blocks of careful masonry, there is another wall of nondescript character, which projects to the present day above the surface of the Akropolis and forms a kind of parapet. This wall is composed of stones, Roman brick, and earthwork, and has been considered a barbarian wall. We shall recur presently to the date of this structure. Excerpt from American Journal of Archaeology and of the History of the Fine Arts, 1887, Vol. 3 Accordingly, for the next hundred years artistic activity in Rome and the products of artists of Greece working for the Roman market appear to have been chiefly reproductive, and this copying craft appears to have continued and to have been fostered in Rome ever after so that most of the marble statues constituting the collections of Europe are such capies or adaptations of celebrated Greek works miled into existence by this Roman demand. Excerpt from The American Journal of Archeology and of the History of Fine Arts, 1886, Vol. 2 Owing to the nature of the building-materials of Assyria, the columns of that country were of wood,24 and but few vestiges of them have been preserved. Fragments of wooden shafts, encased in scales of bronze, have, however, been found,25 and these suffice to give certainty to the conclusions derived from the representations of columns upon Mesopotamian reliefs. Excerpt from The American Journal of Archaeology and of the History of the Fine Arts, 1885, Vol. 1 N ow it appears to me that this form which the ceremony assumes after the time of Pericles, is the result of an intermingling of the ceremonies in commemoration of Theseus with those dedi cated to the worship of Athene. And this supposition will gain in weight the more we bear in mind, let, that, in the course of time the various ceremonies of gods and heroes strongly tended to intermingle 2nd, that Athene and Theseus became more and more closely associated as the patrons of Attica, and that they both have an especial share in the constitution of the Panathenaic festival; and 3rd, that after the Persian war the chief power of the Athenians consisted in their maritime force, a suggestion of which they would naturally tend to introduce in connexion with their patron deity.
