The American Revolution by John Lauris Blake Pdf
Excerpt from The American Revolution: Including Also the Beauties of American History The following Anecdotes were principally selected by a youth of twelve years of age. Having had constant access to a library well supplied with books on History and Biography, he early acquired a taste for reading such works; and the present small volume is one of the results of such an attention to this species of literature. The selection was made at intervals between hours of devotion to elementary and classical study; and may hence be viewed as having been rather an amusement, than a labor of painful toil and research. The utility of compilations like the present is too well known to require particular commendation. They are always read with avidity, if well made; being usually preferred to the most fascinating kinds of fiction; and what is far more important, they are among the most beneficial books to be found. They almost invariably create a taste for reading history and biography. Good anecdotes in these literary regions are analogous to the precious stones found in the bosom of the earth; which, though sparsely scattered, will long be sought with the most cheerful and untiring assiduity. A single case of success may cheer on the fond and enthusiastic votary of these deeply hid treasures, even for months, amidst nothing but the mere rubbish that contains them. London in a Box by Odai Johnson Pdf
2017 Theatre Library Association Freedley Award Finalist In this remarkable feat of historical research, Odai Johnson pieces together the surviving fragments of the story of the first professional theatre troupe based in the British North American colonies. In doing so, he tells the story of how colonial elites came to decide they would no longer style themselves British gentlemen, but instead American citizens. London in a Box chronicles the enterprise of David Douglass, founder and manager of the American Theatre, from the 1750s to the climactic 1770s. How he built this network of patrons and theatres and how it all went up in flames as the revolution began is the subject of this witty history. A treat for anyone interested in the world of the American Revolution and an important study for historians of the period.

Domestic History of the American Revolution (Classic Reprint) by Ellet Pdf
Excerpt from Domestic History of the American Revolution To guard against misapprehension, it is proper to say, that in this attempt to present in a new and interesting light the history of our struggle for national existence, there is nothing of fanciful embellishment. I hold in just aversion the to mancing trash under which, at the present day, the simple and picturesque - because simple - realities of our American story seem in danger of being buried. Not only has no aid of fiction been employed, but no traditional matter has been introduced, unless sustained by indisputable authority. PRESENT-DAY THOUGHTS ON THE AM by Charles McLean Andrews Pdf
Excerpt from Present-Day Thoughts on the American Revolution: Phi Beta Kappa Oration, June 18th, 1919 But the healthy instinct of future generations will not be content with such a vapid interpretation of our past; it will demand the truth, no matter how little flattering it may prove to be; and the day will come - in fact it is not far distant - when our history will be studied for its own sake and when the events of our Revolution will no longer be used to glorify ancestors, to justify racial claims to prominence in our struggle for independence, or, what is worse than all else, to increase the animosity toward Great Britain on the basis of events occurring a century and a half ago. 'many of the current interpretations of our Revolutionary history are merely forms of propaganda designed for party advantage or founded on mistaken ideas of patriotic duty. And when all these are swept away and the events of these momentous years are studied for the truth that is in them then only will the profession of historian have come into its own in America. Liberty Is Sweet by Woody Holton Pdf
A “deeply researched and bracing retelling” (Annette Gordon-Reed, Pulitzer Prize–winning historian) of the American Revolution, showing how the Founders were influenced by overlooked Americans—women, Native Americans, African Americans, and religious dissenters. Using more than a thousand eyewitness records, Liberty Is Sweet is a “spirited account” (Gordon S. Wood, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Radicalism of the American Revolution) that explores countless connections between the Patriots of 1776 and other Americans whose passion for freedom often brought them into conflict with the Founding Fathers. “It is all one story,” prizewinning historian Woody Holton writes. Holton describes the origins and crucial battles of the Revolution from Lexington and Concord to the British surrender at Yorktown, always focusing on marginalized Americans—enslaved Africans and African Americans, Native Americans, women, and dissenters—and on overlooked factors such as weather, North America’s unique geography, chance, misperception, attempts to manipulate public opinion, and (most of all) disease. Thousands of enslaved Americans exploited the chaos of war to obtain their own freedom, while others were given away as enlistment bounties to whites. Women provided material support for the troops, sewing clothes for soldiers and in some cases taking part in the fighting. Both sides courted native people and mimicked their tactics. Liberty Is Sweet is a “must-read book for understanding the founding of our nation” (Walter Isaacson, author of Benjamin Franklin), from its origins on the frontiers and in the Atlantic ports to the creation of the Constitution. Offering surprises at every turn—for example, Holton makes a convincing case that Britain never had a chance of winning the war—this majestic history revivifies a story we thought we already knew.

History of the American Revolution by Samuel Farmer Wilson Pdf
Excerpt from History of the American Revolution: With a Preliminary View of the Character and Principles of the Colonists, and Their Controversies With Great Britain Tan first intention of the writer of this book was to prepare an abstract of some one of the larger histories of the American Revolution, in a more compact form than any which he had met with in his own reading. The object was to present a convenient volume, which should embrace all the principal occurrences, civil, military, and political, in America and Europe, having a direct in uence on the principles and progress of the revolutionary contest, at the same time that it should avoid all minor details not positively necessary to the continuity or integrity of the narrative. The military events were to be made less pro minent than is usual; and all circumstantial accounts of battles and mancetwes in the field, beyond leading incidents important for the understanding of the issue, were to be avoided. After examining several of the principal authorities, the design of following any particular author was abandoned, and the present plan adopted, of re-writing and re-arranging the Whole, without regard to the order or language of previous histories. These are the claims of the work to originality. Its merits are submitted to the judgment of the public. The writer has diligently compared the received authorities, and exercised his judgment freely in selecting and arranging the essential facts; and he thinks he has brought within the compass of a volume convenient for popular use, a connected narrative of the revolution, em bracing all the principal events - foreign and domestic. Those portions which relate to the foreign negotiations, are more full in proportion, than the other divisions of the sub ject. They will be found, it is behaved, correct and valuable. The Province of Quebec and the Early American Revolution by Victor Coffin Pdf
Excerpt from The Province of Quebec and the Early American Revolution: A Study in English-American Colonial History The present study was undertaken as one in English co lonial history, and my first thought was closely to investi gate governmental conditions in those parts of North America that did not join in the movement of revolt, not only just before and during the War of Independence, but also for such a period beyond that struggle as might Show its more immediate effects on English colonial policy. The claims of other work have required the abandonment of the greater part of this undertaking, and the present publica tion deals only with the Province of Quebec, from its acquisition in 1760 down into the Revolution. As an insti tutional study the investigation ends with the Parliament ary settlement of the constitution of the province by the Quebec Act of 1774; but as a contribution to the history of the American revolution it has gone far enough into the first years of the war to show the main connections of Can ada with that event. These connections seemed to offer an important and unexplored field of investigation, and have therefore been emphasized to a degree not originally in tended. On both sides of my work institutional and revo lutionary, - the Quebec Act becomes the central point. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Women's Letters by Lisa Grunwald,Stephen J. Adler Pdf
Historical events of the last three centuries come alive through these women’s singular correspondences—often their only form of public expression. In 1775, Rachel Revere tries to send financial aid to her husband, Paul, in a note that is confiscated by the British; First Lady Dolley Madison tells her sister about rescuing George Washington’s portrait during the War of 1812; one week after JFK’s assassination, Jacqueline Kennedy pens a heartfelt letter to Nikita Khrushchev; and on September 12, 2001, a schoolgirl writes a note of thanks to a New York City firefighter, asking him, “Were you afraid?” The letters gathered here also offer fresh insight into the personal milestones in women’s lives. Here is a mid-nineteenth-century missionary describing a mastectomy performed without anesthesia; Marilyn Monroe asking her doctor to spare her ovaries in a handwritten note she taped to her stomach before appendix surgery; an eighteen-year-old telling her mother about her decision to have an abortion the year after Roe v. Wade; and a woman writing to her parents and in-laws about adopting a Chinese baby. With more than 400 letters and over 100 stunning photographs, Women’s Letters is a work of astonishing breadth and scope, and a remarkable testament to the women who lived–and made–history. From the Hardcover edition.
