The Spanish and Portuguese Jews of seventeenth-century Amsterdam cultivated a remarkable culture centered on the Bible. School children studied the Bible systematically, while rabbinic literature was pushed to levels reached by few students; adults met in confraternities to study Scripture; and families listened to Scripture-based sermons in synagogue, and to help pass the long, cold winter nights of northwest Europe. The community's rabbis produced creative, and often unprecedented scholarship on the Jewish Bible as well as the New Testament. Amsterdam's People of the Book shows that this unique, Bible-centered culture resulted from the confluence of the Jewish community's Catholic and converso past with the Protestant world in which they came to live. Studying Amsterdam's Jews offers an early window into the prioritization of the Bible over rabbinic literature -- a trend that continues through modernity in western Europe. It allows us to see how Amsterdam's rabbis experimented with new historical methods for understanding the Bible, and how they grappled with doubts about the authority and truth of the Bible that were growing in the world around them. This open access book presents findings from 15 European countries participating in the second cycle of the IEA International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS 2016). The study investigates the ways in which young people are prepared to undertake their roles as citizens in a range of countries in the second decade of the 21st century. It responds to new and persisting challenges in the area of civic and citizenship education. The main results presented in this book are based on data collected using a European student questionnaire and provide insights into lower-secondary students’ views on European identity (such as whether they identify as European, or have opportunities to learn about Europe in school), perceptions of freedom of movement and immigration (such as attitudes toward immigration, restriction of freedom of movement, and the freedom of European citizens to live and work across Europe), and perceptions of Europe and its future (such as views on European cooperation, expectations regarding Europe’s future, and attitudes toward the European Union). For the 12 countries that participated in the previous cycle (ICCS 2009), ICCS 2016 reveals changes in young people’s perceptions of immigration and European identity between 2009 and 2016. Test and questionnaire data from the international core study are used to review the extent to which region-specific perceptions are related to other factors, such as students’ level of civic knowledge and social or educational contexts.

Excerpt from New Amsterdam and Its People: Studies, Social and Topographical, of the Town Under Dutch and Early English Rule It is perhaps unfortunate, in some respects, that Washington Irving chose to employ his great talents in writing the amusing "Knickerbocker History" of New York. A burlesque history of New York does not seem to be called for per se, any more than a burlesque history of the Plymouth Colony, and the presentation of a fictitious type of the colonists of the former is calculated to work the same sort of inconveniences as would the selection, for example, of Colonel Pride or of Praise-God Barebones as a type of the latter. Readers of such works are supposed, it is true, to bear in mind the fact that they are considering the humorous descriptions of non-existent characters; but when for any reason the work becomes almost a classic, as it were, of the literature of the country, the type therein portrayed passes insensibly in the popular mind into something like the embodiment of truth. The superficial American who travels in England, or the superficial Englishman who travels in America, when he writes a book about his travels, is apt to set forth the few people he has chanced to meet as representatives of national types of character. Both of these worthies are even more prone to do the same thing when they travel in a foreign country with the tongue of which they are of necessity but imperfectly acquainted, but in such cases their performances usually fall beneath the dignity of criticism. No community, however, can be rightly judged in this manner, for in each one are to be found traits of character almost as diverse and distinct as are the individuals who compose it.
