Not illustrated. 1909 edition. Excerpt: ...carried into execution at that time, your memorialist, after earnest, repeated, but unavailing, remonstrances against such a course of proceedings, resolved, as the only way to rescue St. Martin from impending misery and death, to arrest the process of transportation and prevent the consequent suffering, by taking him into his own private family, where all the care and attention were bestowed that his condition required. ' St. Martin was, at this time, as before intimated, altogether helpless and suffering under the debilitating effects of nis wounds--naked and destitute of everything. In this situation your memorialist received, kept, nursed, medically and surgically treated and sustained him, at much inconvenience and expense, for nearly two years, dressing his wounds daily, and for considerable part of the time twice a day, nursed him, fed him, clothed him, lodged him and furnished him with such necessaries and comforts as his condition and suffering required. ' At the end of these two years he had become able to walk and help himself a little, though unable to provide for his own necessities. In this situation your where, taking the man with him, he continued the experiments until August. He then took him to Burlington and to Plattsburgh. From the latter place St. Martin returned to Canada, without obtaining Dr. Beaumont's consent. He remained in Canada four years, worked as a voyageur, married and had two children. In 1829 Beaumont succeeded in getting track of St. Martin, and the American Fur Company engaged him and transported him to Fort Crawford on the upper Mississippi. The side and wound were in the same condition as in 1825. Experiments were continued uninterruptedly until March, 1831, when circumstances made it expedient that...

An Alabama Student and Other Biographical Essays (Classic Reprint) by William Osler Pdf

Excerpt from An Alabama Student and Other Biographical Essays To a lifelong interest in biography as a recreation I have added a strong conviction of its value in educa tion; and so it has happened that for the occasional address a biographical subject was often chosen. Of those here collected, all of which have already appeared in the journals, more than half deal with aspects of the life of physicians in the United States. In what better way could I show gratitude for the extraordinary kindness experienced during twenty-one years than by a constant appeal to the students to take as their models the great men of the profession of their own country? In no age and in no land have the Hippo cratic ideals been more fully realized than in some of the lives here portrayed. Pictures such as these, de tached as many of them are from each other, have but one value to the student - to waken that precious quality of human sympathy which may enable him to appreciate that in the simple annals of such a career as the 'alabama Student' a life may be as perfect as in a Harvey or a Locke. Out of the Dead House by Susan Wells Pdf

In the last decades of the nineteenth century, two thousand women physicians formed a significant and lively scientific community in the United States. Many were active writers; they participated in the development of medical record-keeping and research, and they wrote self-help books, social and political essays, fiction, and poetry. Out of the Dead House rediscovers the contributions these women made to the developing practice of medicine and to a community of women in science. Susan Wells combines studies of medical genres, such as the patient history or the diagnostic conversation, with discussions of individual writers. The women she discusses include Ann Preston, the first woman dean of a medical college; Hannah Longshore, a successful practitioner who combined conventional and homeopathic medicine; Rebecca Crumpler, the first African American woman physician to publish a medical book; and Mary Putnam Jacobi, writer of more than 180 medical articles and several important books. Wells shows how these women learned to write, what they wrote, and how these texts were read. Out of the Dead House also documents the ways that women doctors influenced medical discourse during the formation of the modern profession. They invented forms and strategies for medical research and writing, including methods of using survey information, taking patient histories, and telling case histories. Out of the Dead House adds a critical episode to the developing story of women as producers and critics of culture, including scientific culture.

The Great Canadian Outbreaks by Nevio Cimolai Pdf

What do a rowing coach, lawyer, First Nation’s aboriginal, hockey manager, business woman, and medical resident have in common? – The Great Canadian Outbreaks How many infectious outbreaks will you experience in a lifetime? How do Canadians behave during an outbreak, and how do they respond thereafter? The Great Canadian Outbreaks presents ten short stories each depicting a unique infectious outbreak from across Canada in various historic times. These fictional vignettes capture the essence of factual events as diverse as the social fabric of our country. Each story is followed by a lay description of the pertinent science and epidemiology in these outbreak scenarios. We live in a microbial world where there is ample opportunity for human infection. Healers and Achievers by Raphael S. Bloch, M.D. Pdf

Summary of Healers and Achievers (ID No. 110473) by Raphael S. Bloch, M.D. It is not widely known that throughout history physicians have contributed more than just medical care to civilization. Healers and Achievers is a series of biographies of doctors from ancient Egypt to the twenty-first century who distinguished themselves with lasting non-medical accomplishments. They include the architect of the first Egyptian pyramid, a pope, the "Fathers" of astronomy, geology, magnetism, and taxonomy, American Founding Fathers, French Revolutionaries, a buccaneer, world-class athletes, a spy, and an astronaut. Their life stories are told in the context of the eras in which they lived, and their fields of medical and non-medical expertise are explained in terms comprehensible to both laymen and physicians.

Learning from the Wounded by Shauna Devine Pdf

Nearly two-thirds of the Civil War's approximately 750,000 fatalities were caused by disease--a staggering fact for which the American medical profession was profoundly unprepared. In the years before the war, training for physicians in the United States was mostly unregulated, and medical schools' access to cadavers for teaching purposes was highly restricted. Shauna Devine argues that in spite of these limitations, Union army physicians rose to the challenges of the war, undertaking methods of study and experimentation that would have a lasting influence on the scientific practice of medicine. Though the war's human toll was tragic, conducting postmortems on the dead and caring for the wounded gave physicians ample opportunity to study and develop new methods of treatment and analysis, from dissection and microscopy to new research into infectious disease processes. Examining the work of doctors who served in the Union Medical Department, Devine sheds new light on how their innovations in the midst of crisis transformed northern medical education and gave rise to the healing power of modern health science.
