An Alabama Student and Other Biographical Essays (Classic Reprint) by William Osler Pdf

Excerpt from An Alabama Student and Other Biographical Essays To a lifelong interest in biography as a recreation I have added a strong conviction of its value in educa tion; and so it has happened that for the occasional address a biographical subject was often chosen. Of those here collected, all of which have already appeared in the journals, more than half deal with aspects of the life of physicians in the United States. In what better way could I show gratitude for the extraordinary kindness experienced during twenty-one years than by a constant appeal to the students to take as their models the great men of the profession of their own country? In no age and in no land have the Hippo cratic ideals been more fully realized than in some of the lives here portrayed. Pictures such as these, de tached as many of them are from each other, have but one value to the student - to waken that precious quality of human sympathy which may enable him to appreciate that in the simple annals of such a career as the 'alabama Student' a life may be as perfect as in a Harvey or a Locke. Not illustrated. 1909 edition. Excerpt: ...carried into execution at that time, your memorialist, after earnest, repeated, but unavailing, remonstrances against such a course of proceedings, resolved, as the only way to rescue St. Martin from impending misery and death, to arrest the process of transportation and prevent the consequent suffering, by taking him into his own private family, where all the care and attention were bestowed that his condition required. ' St. Martin was, at this time, as before intimated, altogether helpless and suffering under the debilitating effects of nis wounds--naked and destitute of everything. In this situation your memorialist received, kept, nursed, medically and surgically treated and sustained him, at much inconvenience and expense, for nearly two years, dressing his wounds daily, and for considerable part of the time twice a day, nursed him, fed him, clothed him, lodged him and furnished him with such necessaries and comforts as his condition and suffering required. ' At the end of these two years he had become able to walk and help himself a little, though unable to provide for his own necessities. In this situation your where, taking the man with him, he continued the experiments until August. He then took him to Burlington and to Plattsburgh. From the latter place St. Martin returned to Canada, without obtaining Dr. Beaumont's consent. He remained in Canada four years, worked as a voyageur, married and had two children. In 1829 Beaumont succeeded in getting track of St. Martin, and the American Fur Company engaged him and transported him to Fort Crawford on the upper Mississippi. The side and wound were in the same condition as in 1825. Experiments were continued uninterruptedly until March, 1831, when circumstances made it expedient that...

The Myth of William Osler by Patrick Fiddes Pdf

The Myth of William Osler presents a radical re-examination of the philosophies and practices of a renowned American medical hero. It challenges widely-accepted beliefs about Osler which, while unsettling to many readers, brings to light interpretations and approaches which have disrespected Osler’s expressed wishes, exaggerated his achievements and dishonoured his memory. The Myth questions the originality of both Osler’s teaching philosophies and his educational legacies, and the credit he received for educational innovations that were not his. It examines Osler’s disregard of contemporary advances occurring in moral philosophy and medical ethics, his uncertain values and his documented unethical practices. The Myth argues that Osler’s immutable habit, his proclaimed Way, reflected a lifelong application to each task that, in the end, became his defining flaw. While William Osler’s reputation as a learned medical historian is not contested, The Myth attests that even here, his interpretations of medicine’s history were highly selective, often constructed to support a view predicated on Ancient Greek, Renaissance European and English medical philosophies and practices. Osler’s teaching—as revered as it was—centred on the ancient tradition of the Hippocratic art of observation while remaining largely untouched by the emerging importance of the patient’s history that was being pursued by more unbiased and innovative others. William Osler’s legacy will stand but with a greater complexity than has been previously appreciated.

Disrupted Dialogue by Robert M. Veatch Pdf

Medical ethics changed dramatically in the past 30 years because physicians and humanists actively engaged each other in discussions that sometimes led to confrontation and controversy, but usually have improved the quality of medical decision-making. Before then, medical ethics had been isolated for almost two centuries from the larger philosophical, social, and religious controversies of the time. Only in the past three decades has the dialogue resumed as physicians turned to humanists for help just when humanists wanted their work to be relevant to real-life social problems. The book tells the critical story of how the breakdown in communication between physicians and humanists occurred and how it was repaired when new developments in medicine together with a social revolution forced the leaders of these two fields to resume their dialogue.
