Excerpt from An Elementary Grammar of the German Language: Combined With Exercises, Readings and Conversations An experience of many years has convinced me that in teaching younger pupils German, better success is Obtained by choosing at first the most important parts of each lesson in my German Grammar, and by taking at a later stage in the pupil's progress those parts which were previously omitted, together with a repetition of what has already been learned. It being a somewhat difficult matter for even the most competent teacher to select exactly those parts which should first claim the learner's attention, it appeared to me much better to arrange them separately in a smaller book, and this gave rise to the idea of publishing this' Elementary German ammar. As a mastery Of the German Grammar requires in the ordinary school course at least two or more years, this smaller Grammar may be profitably placed in the hands of beginners for the first year, and the larger Grammar should follow in a later or higher class.
