Excerpt from An Elementary Spanish Grammar The author of this grammar has endeavoured to follow the recommendations made by the Joint Committee on Grammatical Terminology so far as those recommendations are applicable to the structure of the Spanish language. The scheme put forward by the Joint Committee does not specially envisage the terminology of Spanish grammar. The Spanish conjugation has important peculiarities which, perhaps, call for the adoption of a special nomenclature for certain tenses of the subjunctive mood (and even of the indicative). Yet, as the anarchy in Spanish is, in this respect, even greater than in English or French, the author has deemed it advisable to adopt the recommendations of the Joint Committee for the sake of uniformity and simplicity. Though not beyond criticism, they tend on the whole to diminish the confusion wrought in the minds of all students by the lack of a uniform terminology. In spite of the fact that the use of the term Direct Object is not recommended by the Joint Committee, the author has found himself compelled to employ it in order to avoid misunderstanding: this misunderstanding might arise from the fact that the term Indirect Object is included among the recommendations, and is used in the present work. Excerpt from Elementary Spanish Grammar With Practical Exercises for Reading, Conversation, and Composition This book is, as the title indicates, an elementary grammar. The attempt has been made to present in a clear and logical manner the important principles only. The book furnishes enough material in Spanish grammar, texts, conversation, and composition for one year of college and two years of high school work, granting that about one half of the time be given to the reading and translation of literary texts. In high school work the authors recommend that the work of the first year end with Lesson XXX. The exercises, which are of a practical character, have been prepared with the greatest care and in accordance with modern pedagogical principles. They are in the form of connected, practical, and interesting dialogues, descriptions and narratives concerning school, city and country life, and ordinary business transactions. In the last four lessons they are exclusively of a commercial character, thus furnishing a good beginning in Spanish commercial practice and correspondence. The exercises are abundant and the teacher can use them in various ways. He may make frequent reviews; change the subject pronouns in the texts; add conversational exercises both for oral and written work, based on the texts; or reproduce from day to day the subject matter of the previous lesson.
