The India-China Opium Trade in the Nineteenth Century by Hunt Janin Pdf
From 1823 to 1860 a fleet of small, fast brigs and schooners carried chests of opium from India to China, often facing the challenges of pirates and typhoons along the way. This shadowy trade, conducted by American, British, and Indian firms, thrived despite its moral and legal consequences. Drawing largely on primary sources, the story of the opium trade comes through in the voices of those who saw it firsthand. Appendices describe a favorite shipboard recipe, two of the ships involved in the trade and their crews, excerpts from accounts of the Opium War, and language equivalents for proper and place names. A bibliography is included, and maps and photographs help illumine this important and unusual period of history.

The Indo-Chinese Opium Trade by J. Spencer Hill Pdf
Excerpt from The Indo-Chinese Opium Trade: Considered in Relation to Its History, Morality, and Expediency, and Its Influence on Christian Missions; Being the Essay Which Obtained the Maitland Prize of the University for 1882 The Chinese authorities continued to ex'postulate, and in 1821 the Governor of Canton took active measures to sup press the traffic. The Opium vessels, however, when driven from Whampoa, merely retired to Lintin, an island close to the mouth of the Canton river, where they established them selves, and the trade 'almost assumed a regular character.' The attempts made to extend Operations along the coast were generally successful, and the local authorities, finding themselves unable to drive away the Opium dealers, con tented themselves with the easier process of issuing mere paper edicts, and connived, for a consideration, at a' trade to repress which they lacked either the energy or the power. Imperial Twilight by Stephen R. Platt Pdf
As China reclaims its position as a world power, Imperial Twilight looks back to tell the story of the country’s last age of ascendance and how it came to an end in the nineteenth-century Opium War. As one of the most potent turning points in the country’s modern history, the Opium War has since come to stand for everything that today’s China seeks to put behind it. In this dramatic, epic story, award-winning historian Stephen Platt sheds new light on the early attempts by Western traders and missionaries to “open” China even as China’s imperial rulers were struggling to manage their country’s decline and Confucian scholars grappled with how to use foreign trade to China’s advantage. The book paints an enduring portrait of an immensely profitable—and mostly peaceful—meeting of civilizations that was destined to be shattered by one of the most shockingly unjust wars in the annals of imperial history. Brimming with a fascinating cast of British, Chinese, and American characters, this riveting narrative of relations between China and the West has important implications for today’s uncertain and ever-changing political climate.
