An Evening Walk - A Romantic Poem for Nature Lovers by William Wordsworth Pdf

First published in 1793, “An Evening Walk - A Romantic Poem for Nature Lovers” is a poem by English Romantic poet William Wordsworth. Composed whilst he was at school, the young lady to whom it was addressed was his sister, the poet and diarist Dorothy Wordsworth. A wonderful example of English Romantic poetry, “An Evening Walk” is not to be missed by fans and collectors of Wordsworth's work. William Wordsworth (1770–1850) was an English poet famous for helping to usher in the Romantic Age in English literature with the publication of “Lyrical Ballads” (1798), which he co-wrote with Samuel Taylor Coleridge. His best known work is perhaps “The Prelude”, a semi-autobiographical poem from his early years which was changed and expanded many times throughout his life. Wordsworth was poet laureate of Britain between 1843 until his death in 1850. Other notable works by this author include: “The Tables Turned”, “The Thorn”, and “Lines Composed A Few Miles above Tintern Abbey”. Contents include: “An Evening Walk – Notes By William Knight” and “An Evening Walk – Addressed To A Young Lady”. Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. We are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with introductory notes from “The Poetical Works of William Wordsworth” by William Knight.

Community, Religion, and Literature by Cleanth Brooks Pdf

As the last collection of Cleanth Brooks's essays before his death, Community, Religion, and Literature represents his final, considered views on the reading of literature and the role it plays in our society. He argues that the proper and essential role of literature lies in giving us our sense of community. Yet he denounces the extent to which literature, too, is now being usurped by the critics who see writing as pure language. He believes that just as religion renders truth of another sort, so literature is an expression of the "truth about human beings." More and more in this age of science, literature has "assumed the burden of providing civilization with its values." Community, Religion, and Literature offers students of literature the opportunity to understand what Cleanth Brooks was actually saying, rather than what others have said he was saying.

Ernest John Moeran by Ian Maxwell Pdf

This long-awaited study of the life and music of Anglo-Irish composer Ernest John Moeran (1894-1950) finally provides a full biography of the last senior figure in early twentieth-century British Music to have been without one. Although Moeran's work was widely performed during his lifetime, he suffered neglect in the years following his death. It was not until a re-awakening of appreciation for the music of the folksong-inspired English pastoralism in the latter part of the twentieth century that Moeran's tuneful, well-crafted and approachable music began to attract a new audience. However, widely accepted misconceptions about his life and character have obscured a clearunderstanding of both man and composer. Written with the benefit of access to previously unknown or unresearched archives, Ernest John Moeran: His Life and Music strips away a hitherto unchallenged mythological framework, and replaces it by a thorough-going examination and analysis of the life and work of a musician that may reasonably be asserted as having been unique in British music history.

Wordsworth’s Poetry 1787-1814 by Geoffrey Hartman Pdf

The drama of consciousness and maturation in the growth of a poet's mind is traced from Wordsworth's earliest poems to The Excursion of 1814. Mr. Hartman follows Wordsworth's growth into self-consciousness, his realization of the autonomy of the spirit, and his turning back to nature. The apocalyptic bias is brought out, perhaps for the first time since Bradley's Oxford Lectures, and without slighting in any way his greatness as a nature poet. Rather, a dialectical relation is established between his visionary temper and the slow and vacillating growth of the humanized or sympathetic imagination. Mr. Hartman presents a phenomenology of the mind with important bearings on the Romantic movement as a whole and as confirmation of Wordsworth's crucial position in the history of English poetry. Mr. Hartman is professor of English and comparative literature at the University of Iowa. "A most distinguished book, subtle, penetrating, profound."—Rene Wellek. "If it is the purpose of criticism to illuminate, to evaluate, and to send the reader back to the text for a fresh reading, Hartman has succeeded in establishing the grounds for such a renewal of appreciation of Wordsworth."—Donald Weeks, Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism.

Essays on Anglo-Indian Literature by Sujit Bose Pdf

Contains fine examples of Anglo-Indian literature. The original books were written at various periods in the history of Anglo-Indian literature. The first two chapters are attempts to provide an overview of the beginning and the growth in Anglo-Indian prose and poetry. When Bishop Heber wrote his Journals, he described in detail what he saw and understood in India. The chapter on his Journals contains an analysis of Heber's presentation of the socio-economic-cultural condition of India in the early nineteenth century. The essay on Twenty-One Days in India analyses as to how an Englishman smiled at his own countrymen in colonial India. The behavioural peculiarities of the characters are brought into focus, examined and then mildly satirised. This book is reminiscent of the vignettes that were published during the Victorian period in England. The tetralogy The Near and the Far of L.H. Myers is, among others, exemplary of the author's understanding of the orient. The chapter on this novel is an analysis of the orientalism of the author.
