For this revision the authors are largely indebted to Professor A. P. Cole man of the University of Toronto, who has given the volume the benefit of his intimate knowledge of the geography and geology of the Dominion, substituting in every chapter pertinent examples and discussions in place of material which would have special value only in the United States. New chapters have been added, dealing with rocks, with the physical history of Canada, and with matters of elementary astronomy. For the chapters dealing with astronomy Professor C. A. Chant of the University of Toronto is responsible. The study of rocks is introduced before the processes are taken up in detail, and the account of the earth's relations to the sun is transferred to a point near the end of the book. Suitable substitutions have been made in the maps and half-tone illustrations. Not withstanding, these changes, the volume distinctly keeps its identity, and is issued in its new dress in the hope that it may be useful in geographic instruc tion in the High' Schools, Collegiate Institutes and Academies of Canada. The requirements of candidates preparing for the Cambridge Senior Local Examination in Physical Geography have been specially kept in view, and the book covers also all that part of the syllabus of the Oxford Senior Local Examination which refers to Physical Geography in the strict sense, as well as the physical part of the syllabus in geography for the London Matriculation, and examinations of similar scope. Among the special features are the large number of diagrams and simple sketch-maps, intended not only to illustrate particular problems, but also to serve as a guide to teachers and scholars in the construction of other similar maps and diagrams. Further, as there is now general agreement that physical geography can only be regarded as coming legitimately under the scope of school geography when the phenomena described are considered in their relation to human life and activities, this aspect of the subject has been carefully kept in view, and references have been given to facilitate further work by teacher and scholar in this direction. Again, as it has always been an objection to the ordinary text-book of physical geography that it treats the subject from too abstract a standpoint, giving, for example, generalised accounts of plains, plateaux, etc., without adequate discussion of particular examples, and thus producing an impression of unreality, this danger has been avoided here by the description of concrete examples, intended to be used by the pupil as models for similar accounts of his own. In the preparation of this book, which has been in hand for several years, there is an attempt to meet this apparent demand; but for reasons which are obvious to many, it has not seemed wise to attempt to follow the somewhat radical suggestions which were made by the majority of the geography conference of the Committee of Ten. Therefore, while the physiographic side is given more prominence than is customary in works of this kind, this book attempts to only partly meet the Committees suggestions. In the preparation of the book, effort has been made to introduce new material, particularly in the illustrations, which are a prominent part of the book. Also, there has been an endeavor to make the book scientifically accurate, and to introduce the latest knowledge on the subjects treated.
