An Introduction to the Trochilidae, Or Family of Humming-Birds (Classic Reprint) by John Gould Pdf

Excerpt from An Introduction to the Trochilidae, or Family of Humming-Birds As the Introduction to my "Monograph of the Trochilidae" involved much intricate and laborious investigation, particularly with regard to the synonymy of the various species, I have been induced to have it set up in octavo for the facility of correction. From this draft, as it were, it has been reprinted in large type for the folio work. Believing that in its present form it might be interesting and useful to many of my scientific friends and others, I have had a limited number of copies printed for distribution among them. It must not, however, be regarded as a complete history of the family, but merely as an introduction to, and a revision of, the genera: the history of the species must be sought for in the folio work. At the same time it contains a considerable amount of information which has been acquired since the commencement of the publication, together with many additions to the synonymy; these are indicated by prefixed asterisks, the synonyms not so distinguished being merely an abbreviated reprint of those which have already appeared in the folio edition. A Monograph of the Trochilidae, Or Family of Hummingbirds by John Gould Pdf

"Alfred Russel Wallace remarked of hummingbirds that they are, as regards the number of distinct kinds collected in a limited area, the most remarkable of all the families of birds. This, combined with their radiant plumages and amazing ability to feed while hovering, fascinated Europeans from the time the first specimens arrived from the New World. Gould was completely captivated, and became an omnivorous collector of hummingbird specimens. His collection numbered in the thousands by the time he commenced work on this monograph, generally considered his masterpiece and one of the greatest of all bird books. Ironically, at the time he created this book he had never seen a living hummingbird (his first was a ruby-throat, seen in Philadelphia in 1857). But with the aid of novel techniques such as painting over gold leaf with transparent watercolors and depicting the birds, often in flight, amid luxuriant tropical flowers he managed to give viewers of his plates a glimpse of his subjects vivid spirit. In fact, one of the most distinctive qualities of the hummingbird's iridescence - the way a male's throat will suddenly flash with brilliance in just the right light - is often captured by Gould's techniques."--abebooks website.

The Business of Nature by Roslyn Russell Pdf

In 1838, John Gould and his wife, Elizabeth, left behind their family and home in London to travel to the far-flung colony of Van Diemen's Land, from where Gould would travel around the mainland to observe the native fauna. Gould's artists - Elizabeth foremost among them - would depict these creatures in exquisite lithographs, accompanied by Gould's commentary. With all the acumen of a shrewd Victorian entrepreneur, Gould established a thriving business that took him into the world of the British aristocracy and the scientific elite. His is a tale of enduring love and of a man's unending ability to see beauty in nature, despite the greatest of life's tragedies.
