An Introduction to Virtual Sound Barriers by Xiaojun Qiu Pdf

A virtual sound barrier is an active noise control system that uses arrays of loudspeakers and microphones to create a useful size of quiet zone and can be used to reduce sound propagation, radiation, or transmission from noise sources or to reduce noise level around people in a noisy environment. This book introduces the history, principle, and design methods of virtual sound barriers first, and then describes recent progress in research on the systems. Two virtual sound barrier systems, i.e., planar virtual sound barrier system and three-dimensional virtual sound barrier system, are discussed including applications, limitations and future direction discussions.

Advanced, Contemporary Control by Andrzej Bartoszewicz,Jacek Kabziński,Janusz Kacprzyk Pdf

This book presents the proceedings of the 20th Polish Control Conference. A triennial event that was first held in 1958, the conference successfully combines its long tradition with a modern approach to shed light on problems in control engineering, automation, robotics and a wide range of applications in these disciplines. The book presents new theoretical results concerning the steering of dynamical systems, as well as industrial case studies and worked solutions to real-world problems in contemporary engineering. It particularly focuses on the modelling, identification, analysis and design of automation systems; however, it also addresses the evaluation of their performance, efficiency and reliability. Other topics include fault-tolerant control in robotics, automated manufacturing, mechatronics and industrial systems. Moreover, it discusses data processing and transfer issues, covering a variety of methodologies, including model predictive, robust and adaptive techniques, as well as algebraic and geometric methods, and fractional order calculus approaches. The book also examines essential application areas, such as transportation and autonomous intelligent vehicle systems, robotic arms, mobile manipulators, cyber-physical systems, electric drives and both surface and underwater marine vessels. Lastly, it explores biological and medical applications of the control-theory-inspired methods.

Design of Wood Highway Sound Barriers by Anonim Pdf

As new and existing U.S. residential areas and high volume highways continue to intermingle, traffic noise abatement procedures continue to be important. This study investigated the acoustic effectiveness, public acceptance, and structural requirements of various designs and types of sound barriers. In addition, the acoustic effectiveness of a prototype sound barrier is reported. Results are presented on the acoustic effectiveness from in situ measurements of one cement bonded composite panel barrier and four precast concrete, two plywood, two glued-laminated, and three post and panel barriers. The research on public acceptance of sound barriers focused on the perception of visual compatibility. Based on results from semantic-differential and individual ratings, wood and concrete barrier designs were perceived to have favored gbsruralgcs qualities. Data collected during the research on acoustic effectiveness and public acceptance were used to develop structural requirements and construction details for a prototype wood sound barrier. The prototype wood sound barrier provided insertion losses of 15 dB or greater, exceeding the 10-dB acceptable performance for a highway sound barrier.

Traffic Flow Dynamics by Martin Treiber,Arne Kesting Pdf

This textbook provides a comprehensive and instructive coverage of vehicular traffic flow dynamics and modeling. It makes this fascinating interdisciplinary topic, which to date was only documented in parts by specialized monographs, accessible to a broad readership. Numerous figures and problems with solutions help the reader to quickly understand and practice the presented concepts. This book is targeted at students of physics and traffic engineering and, more generally, also at students and professionals in computer science, mathematics, and interdisciplinary topics. It also offers material for project work in programming and simulation at college and university level. The main part, after presenting different categories of traffic data, is devoted to a mathematical description of the dynamics of traffic flow, covering macroscopic models which describe traffic in terms of density, as well as microscopic many-particle models in which each particle corresponds to a vehicle and its driver. Focus chapters on traffic instabilities and model calibration/validation present these topics in a novel and systematic way. Finally, the theoretical framework is shown at work in selected applications such as traffic-state and travel-time estimation, intelligent transportation systems, traffic operations management, and a detailed physics-based model for fuel consumption and emissions.

The second edition of Noise Control: From Concept to Application, newly expanded and thoroughly updated, now includes 180 graded problems with solutions, plus 100 end-of-chapter problems with solutions available for instructors on the authors' website. Working from basic scientific principles, the authors show how an understanding of sound can be applied to real-world settings, working through numerous examples in detail and covering good practice in noise control for both new and existing facilities. It covers the essential topics for industrial noise control: acoustics, noise criteria, hearing damage risk, noise assessment measures, measurement instrumentation, sound source types including the calculation and measurement of their output power, sound propagation outdoors, sound in rooms, sound absorbing materials, sound transmission through partitions and enclosures, noise barriers, reactive and dissipative muffler noise reduction, and muffler design considerations such as pressure loss and self-noise generation. Detailed explanations of important concepts make this textbook easy to understand by engineering and science undergraduates, as well as professionals with no background in acoustics. Acoustics and Noise Control by R J Peters Pdf

Acoustics and Noise Control provides a detailed and comprehensive introduction to the principles and practice of acoustics and noise control. Since the last edition was published in 1996 there have been many changes and additions to standards, laws and regulations, codes of practice relating to noise, and in noise measurement techniques and noise control technology so this new edition has been fully revised and updated throughout. The book assumes no previous knowledge of the subject and requires only a basic knowledge of mathematics and physics. There are worked examples in the text to aid understanding and a range of experiments help students use complicated apparatus. Thoroughly revised to cover the latest changes in standards, codes of practice and legislation, this new edition covers much of the Institute of Acoustics Diploma syllabus and has an increased emphasis on the legal issues relating to noise control.

Environmental Noise Pollution by Enda Murphy,Eoin A King Pdf

Environmental Noise Pollution: Noise Mapping, Public Health and Policy addresses the key debates surrounding environmental noise pollution with a particular focus on the European Union. Environmental noise pollution is an emerging public policy and environmental concern and is considered to be one of the most important environmental stressors affecting public health throughout the world. This book examines environmental noise pollution, its health implications, the role of strategic noise mapping for problem assessment, major sources of environmental noise pollution, noise mitigation approaches, and related procedural and policy implications. Drawing on the authors' considerable research expertise in the area, the book is the first coherent work on this major environmental stressor, a new benchmark reference across disciplinary, policy and national boundaries. Highlights recent developments in the policy arena with particular focus on developments in the EU within the context of the European Noise Directive Explores the lessons emerging from nations within the EU and other jurisdictions attempting to legislate and mitigate against the harmful effects of noise pollution Covers the core theoretical concepts and principles surrounding the mechanics of noise pollution as well as the evidence-base linking noise with public health concerns
