Sixth Form Pure Mathematics by C. Plumpton,W. A. Tomkys Pdf

Sixth Form Pure Mathematics, Volume 1, Second Edition, is the first of a series of volumes on Pure Mathematics and Theoretical Mechanics for Sixth Form students whose aim is entrance into British and Commonwealth Universities or Technical Colleges. A knowledge of Pure Mathematics up to G.C.E. O-level is assumed and the subject is developed by a concentric treatment in which each new topic is used to illustrate ideas already treated. The major topics of Algebra, Calculus, Coordinate Geometry, and Trigonometry are developed together. This volume covers most of the Pure Mathematics required for the single subject Mathematics at Advanced Level. Early and rapid progress in calculus is made at the beginning of this volume in order to facilitate the student's progress along the most satisfactory lines in Pure Mathematics, in Theoretical Mechanics and in Physics. The worked examples are an essential feature of this book and they are followed by routine exercises within the text of each chapter, associated closely with the work on which they are dependent. The exercises at the end of each chapter collectively embody all the topics of that chapter and, where possible, the preceding chapters also.

A Course of Mathematics for Engineers and Scientists by Brian H. Chirgwin,Charles Plumpton Pdf

A Course of Mathematics for Engineers and Scientists, Volume 3: Theoretical Mechanics introduces the concepts of virtual work, generalized coordinates and the derivation of generalized forces from the potential energy function. This book is composed of 10 chapters and begins with the principles of mechanics, plane statistics, virtual work, and continuously distributed forces. The succeeding chapters deal with the motion of a particle and the uniplanar motion of a rigid body, as well as the concept of particle dynamics. These topics are followed by discussions of the motions of interacting particles and the principles of stability. The final chapter describes the impulsive motion of a system of particles and collision between bodies. This book will be of value to mathematics and engineering students.

A Course of Mathematics for Engineerings and Scientists by Brian H. Chirgwin,Charles Plumpton Pdf

A Course of Mathematics for Engineers and Scientists offers a mathematics course for undergraduate students reading science and engineering at British and Commonwealth Universities and colleges. The aim of this volume is to generalize and develop the ideas and methods of earlier volumes so that the student can appreciate and use the mathematical methods required in the more advanced parts of physics and engineering. This book begins with elementary ideas of vector algebra which are generalized and developed in two ways. The first is an account of vector analysis and the differential and integral operations and theorems concerning vectors. These ideas find their first generalization in tensor analysis and the transformation of coordinates, including orthogonal curvilinear coordinates. The second development is to matrices, where the properties of arrays of elements, linear equations, and quadratic forms are shown to be the generalizations of elementary algebra and, using 'vector space', of familiar geometrical ideas to n dimensions. The solution of differential equations by series provides a general method for the solution of ordinary and some partial differential equations. A discussion of the properties of the solutions in the light of the Sturm-Liouville theory introduces the conceptions of eigenvalues and orthogonal functions, forming a link with matrices. A chapter on the special functions gives some of the better known properties of Bessel, Legendre, Laguerre, and Hermite functions, which commonly occur in the solution of boundary and initial value problems.

Mathematical Methods by Brian H. Chirgwin,Charles Plumpton Pdf

Mathematical Methods is an introductory course on mathematical methods for students aiming for a first degree in engineering or science. Topics covered include differentiation and integration and their applications; the geometry of two dimensions, and complex numbers. Statistics and probability are also discussed. Comprised of eight chapters, this volume begins with an introduction to fundamental concepts, including the roots of equations; elementary two-dimensional coordinate geometry; limits and continuity; inequalities and quadratic forms; mathematical induction; and convergence. The discussion then turns to the techniques of differentiation and integration and their applications; the geometry of two dimensions; and complex numbers and their roots, together with trigonometric expansions. The book concludes with a chapter on statistics and probability, paying particular attention to the properties of a frequency distribution; some special probability distributions; normal distribution and the error function; and some probability problems. This monograph is intended for students taking a course in engineering or science.

Sixth Form Pure Mathematics by C. Plumpton,W. A. Tomkys Pdf

Sixth Form Pure Mathematics, Volume 2, provides an introduction to inverse trigonometric functions, hyperbolic and inverse hyperbolic functions, and a range of mathematical methods including the use of determinants, the manipulation of inequalities, the solution of easy differential equations, and the use of approximate numerical methods. Complex numbers are defined and the various ways of representing and manipulating them are considered. Polar coordinates, curvature, an elementary study of lengths of curves and areas of surfaces of revolution, a more mature discussion of two-dimensional coordinate geometry than was possible in Volume 1, and an elementary introduction to the methods of three dimensional coordinate geometry comprise the geometrical content of the book. Throughout, the authors have tried to preserve the concentric style which they used in Volume 1 and the many worked examples and exercises in each chapter are designed or chosen to provide a continuous reminder of the work of the preceding chapters. Except for Pure Geometry, the two volumes cover almost all of the syllabuses for Advanced Pure Mathematics of the nine Examining Boards. This book provides an adequate course for mathematical pupils at Grammar Schools and a useful introductory course for Science and Engineering students in their first year at University or Technical College or engaged in private study.

Theoretical Mechanics for Sixth Forms by C. Plumpton,W. A. Tomkys Pdf

Theoretical Mechanics for Sixth Forms, Second Edition is a 14-chapter book that begins by elucidating the nature of theoretical mechanics. The book then describes the statics of a particle in illustration of the techniques of handling vector quantities. Subsequent chapters focus on the principle of moments, parallel forces and centers of gravity; and the application of Newton's second law to the dynamics of a particle and the ideas of work and energy, impulse and momentum, and power. The concept of friction is also explained. This volume concludes with chapters concerning motion in a circle and simple harmonic motion. This text will serve as a more complete course for pupils taking mathematics as a single or double subject.
