An Outline of the Relations Between England and Scotland 500 1707 by Robert Rait Pdf

Book Excerpt: ng him their homage and living under his sole jurisdiction, took the name of the lord whose men they were. A more important question arises with regard to the system of land tenure, and the change from clan ownership to feudal possession. How was the tribal system suppressed? An outline of the process by which Scotland became a feudalized country will be found in the Appendix, where we shall also have an opportunity of referring, for purposes of comparison, to the methods by which clan-feeling was destroyed after the last Jacobite insurrection. Here, it must suffice to give a brief summary of the case there presented. It is important to bear in mind that the tribes of 1066 were not the clans of 1746. The clan system in the Highlands underwent considerable development between the days of Malcolm Canmore and those of the Stuarts. Too much stress must not be laid upon the unwillingness of the people to give up tribal ownership, for it is clear from our early records that the rights of joint-occupancy were con Read More

An Outline of the Relations between England and Scotland (500-1707) by Robert S. Rait Pdf

In 'An Outline of the Relations between England and Scotland (500-1707)', Robert S. Rait provides a unique perspective on the history of these two countries. Unlike other history books that occasionally mention Anglo-Scottish relations, Rait presents a connected narrative of the attitude of the two countries towards each other, providing the data required for a fair appreciation of the policy of Edward I and Henry VIII, or of Elizabeth and James I. The book also explores the racial relationship between England and Scotland, addressing the prevalent theory that the Scottish Lowlanders were "English in speech and manners" and even blood. Rait argues for a modification of this theory, suggesting that historical evidence shows a process of adoption of English manners and language rather than a complete displacement of the Scottish population. This compelling book offers a fresh perspective on the history of two countries that have long been intertwined.

Scottish Unionist Ideology 1886-1965 by Jonathan Wales Pdf

Scotland's Relations with England by William Ferguson Pdf

Two national identities had established themselves by the end of the 11th century in, respectively, the north and south of Britain. The larger southern nation made several attempts on the independence of the smaller and more dynastically-troubled northern state but, after the time of Edward I of England, Scotland held its own. Then in 1603, with the accession of James VI of Scotland to the English throne, an incorporating union seemed to be in prospect, but more than a century passed before a lasting parliamentary union was achieved amid a flurry of intrigue, corruption and power-broking.

Border Bloodshed by Alastair J. Macdonald Pdf

Scottish military offensives against England from 1369 were largely the product of government policy, were launched with careful timing and, in the reign of Robert II, involved close co-operation with France. They succeeded militarily, encouraging the Scots to the point where they were willing to engage in attacks on England beyond the ambition of their French allies. However, diplomatic gains fell well short of forcing English recognition of Scottish independence. Hopes of achieving this by military means were ended in the reign of Robert III when the Scots were heavily defeated in 1402. War was not solely fought with political objectives in mind or other 'rational' factors such as the quest for financial gain. The Scots went to war for emotive reasons too, such as hatred of the English, the search for renown and the sheer enjoyment of fighting. All these factors inspired the Scots to launch a series of bloody, brutal and ultimately futile offensives against England.
