Analysis, Manifolds and Physics Revised Edition by Yvonne Choquet-Bruhat,Cécile DeWitt-Morette,Margaret Dillard-Bleick Pdf

This reference book, which has found wide use as a text, provides an answer to the needs of graduate physical mathematics students and their teachers. The present edition is a thorough revision of the first, including a new chapter entitled ``Connections on Principle Fibre Bundles'' which includes sections on holonomy, characteristic classes, invariant curvature integrals and problems on the geometry of gauge fields, monopoles, instantons, spin structure and spin connections. Many paragraphs have been rewritten, and examples and exercises added to ease the study of several chapters. The index includes over 130 entries.

Twelve problems have been added to the first edition; four of them are supplements to problems in the first edition. The others deal with issues that have become important, since the first edition of Volume II, in recent developments of various areas of physics. All the problems have their foundations in volume 1 of the 2-Volume set Analysis, Manifolds and Physics. It would have been prohibitively expensive to insert the new problems at their respective places. They are grouped together at the end of this volume, their logical place is indicated by a number of parenthesis following the title.

Analysis, Manifolds, and Physics by Yvonne Choquet-Bruhat,Cécile DeWitt-Morette Pdf

This second, companion volume contains 92 applications developing concepts and theorems presented or mentioned in the first volume. Introductions to and applications in several areas not previously covered are also included such as graded algebras with applications to Clifford algebras and (S)pin groups, Weyl Spinors, Majorana pinors, homotopy, supersmooth mappings and Berezin integration, Noether's theorems, homogeneous spaces with applications to Stiefel and Grassmann manifolds, cohomology with applications to (S)pin structures, Bauml;cklund transformations, Poisson manifolds, conformal transformations, Kaluza-Klein theories, Calabi-Yau spaces, universal bundles, bundle reduction and symmetry breaking, Euler-Poincareacute; characteristics, Chern-Simons classes, anomalies, Sobolev embedding, Sobolev inequalities, Wightman distributions and Schwinger functions. The material included covers an unusually broad area and the choice of problems is guided by recent applications of differential geometry to fundamental problems of physics as well as by the authors' personal interests. Many mathematical tools of interest to physicists are presented in a self-contained manner, or are complementary to material already presented in part I. All the applications are presented in the form of problems with solutions in order to stress the questions the authors wished to answer and the fundamental ideas underlying applications. The answers to the solutions are explicitly worked out, with the rigor necessary for a correct usage of the concepts and theorems used in the book. This approach also makes part I accessible to a much larger audience. The book has been enriched by contributions from Charles Doering, Harold Grosse, B. Kent Harrison, N.H. Ibragimov and Carlos Moreno, and collaborations with Ioannis Bakas, Steven Carlip, Gary Hamrick, Humberto La Roche and Gary Sammelmann.

Topics in Contemporary Mathematical Physics by Kai S Lam Pdf

This new (second) edition contains a general treatment of quantum field theory (QFT) in a simple scalar field setting in addition to the modern material on the applications of differential geometry and topology, group theory, and the theory of linear operators to physics found in the first edition. All these are introduced without assuming more background on the part of the reader than a good foundation in undergraduate (junior) level mathematical physics. The new material entirely focuses on an introduction to quantum field theory, emphasizing the Feynman path (functional integral) approach to QFT and the renormalization group. With respect to the latter, the focus is on an introduction of its application to critical phenomena in statistical physics, following the outgrowth of the Callan–Symanzik equation originally developed in the context of high energy physics, and the seminal contributions of Kenneth Wilson. One of the overriding aims of the new material is also to draw students' attention to the deep connections between high energy physics and statistical mechanics. The unavoidable technical aspects are explained with a minimum of prerequisite material and jargon, and conceptual understanding is always given prominence before mastery of technical details, but the importance of the latter is never underestimated. Derivational details and motivational discussions are provided in abundance in order to ensure continuity of reading, and to avoid trying the readers' patience.

Analysis and Algebra on Differentiable Manifolds: A Workbook for Students and Teachers by P.M. Gadea,J. Muñoz Masqué Pdf

A famous Swiss professor gave a student’s course in Basel on Riemann surfaces. After a couple of lectures, a student asked him, “Professor, you have as yet not given an exact de nition of a Riemann surface.” The professor answered, “With Riemann surfaces, the main thing is to UNDERSTAND them, not to de ne them.” The student’s objection was reasonable. From a formal viewpoint, it is of course necessary to start as soon as possible with strict de nitions, but the professor’s - swer also has a substantial background. The pure de nition of a Riemann surface— as a complex 1-dimensional complex analytic manifold—contributes little to a true understanding. It takes a long time to really be familiar with what a Riemann s- face is. This example is typical for the objects of global analysis—manifolds with str- tures. There are complex concrete de nitions but these do not automatically explain what they really are, what we can do with them, which operations they really admit, how rigid they are. Hence, there arises the natural question—how to attain a deeper understanding? One well-known way to gain an understanding is through underpinning the d- nitions, theorems and constructions with hierarchies of examples, counterexamples and exercises. Their choice, construction and logical order is for any teacher in global analysis an interesting, important and fun creating task.

Topics in Contemporary Mathematical Physics by Kai Shue Lam Pdf

This textbook, pitched at the advanced-undergraduate to beginning-graduate level, focuses on mathematical topics of relevance in contemporary physics that are not usually covered in texts at the same level. Its main purpose is to help students appreciate and take advantage of the modern trend of very productive symbiosis between physics and mathematics. Three major areas are covered: (1) linear operators; (2) group representations and Lie algebra representations; and (3) topology and differential geometry. The features of this work include: an exposition style which is a fusion of those common in the standard physics and mathematics literatures; a level of exposition that varies from quite elementary to moderately advanced, so that the text should be of interest to a wide audience; a strong degree of thematic unity, despite the diversity of the topics covered; and cross references, so that, from any part of the book, the reader can trace easily where specific concepts or techniques are introduced.

Manifolds, Tensor Analysis, and Applications by Ralph Abraham,Jerrold E. Marsden,Tudor Ratiu Pdf

The purpose of this book is to provide core material in nonlinear analysis for mathematicians, physicists, engineers, and mathematical biologists. The main goal is to provide a working knowledge of manifolds, dynamical systems, tensors, and differential forms. Some applications to Hamiltonian mechanics, fluid me chanics, electromagnetism, plasma dynamics and control thcory arc given in Chapter 8, using both invariant and index notation. The current edition of the book does not deal with Riemannian geometry in much detail, and it does not treat Lie groups, principal bundles, or Morse theory. Some of this is planned for a subsequent edition. Meanwhile, the authors will make available to interested readers supplementary chapters on Lie Groups and Differential Topology and invite comments on the book's contents and development. Throughout the text supplementary topics are given, marked with the symbols ~ and {l:;J. This device enables the reader to skip various topics without disturbing the main flow of the text. Some of these provide additional background material intended for completeness, to minimize the necessity of consulting too many outside references. We treat finite and infinite-dimensional manifolds simultaneously. This is partly for efficiency of exposition. Without advanced applications, using manifolds of mappings, the study of infinite-dimensional manifolds can be hard to motivate.
