The Tragic Sinking of Gloucester's Patriot by Captain W. Russell Webster,USCG (Ret.) ( Pdf

On the evening of January 2, 2009, Captain Matteo Russo and crewman John Orlando got underway aboard the fifty-four-foot fishing vessel Patriot, from the iconic State Pier in Gloucester, Massachusetts, bound for nearby fishing grounds in search of cod. They never returned. What happened less than eight hours later on that bitter and dark winter early morning that caused the Patriot to sink? Why did the Coast Guard deliberate more than two hours before launching a rescue mission? Using official documents, numerous interviews and insight as a search and rescue commander, maritime historian Captain W. Russell Webster, USCG (Ret.), expertly documents the tragedy of the Patriot, with startling findings. He deftly explores the condition of "normalcy bias" linked to this heartbreaking case, which can cause people--including Coast Guard personnel--to deny and sometimes over-deliberate threats to human life.

The Politics of Recession by Maurice Mullard Pdf

This timely book utilizes the tools of politics, economics and public policy to explore the causes of the recent global financial crisis, which, the author argues, can be explained as the absence of a public interest perspective in policy making. Maurice Mullard points out that recessions are not collective shared experiences. Recessions create winners and losers. Furthermore, recessions are not an external event but reflect the outcomes of the policy process. The author looks beyond economic explanations for the economic crisis, and instead points towards a structural explanation. He explores the concept of social structures, the effects of the relationships between power and influence, and the role of ideology and income inequalities as contributory factors. The commitment to deregulated financial markets created an over the counter derivatives market worth some $640 trillion dollars compared to a global GDP worth $65 trillion dollars. The growth of derivatives markets, the role of credit rating agencies, major shifts in policy making and growing income inequalities are described as major factors explaining the present economic recession. The absence of a public interest perspective, the breakdown of trust in institutions, policy makers' dependence on financial contributions, the housing bubble, and the increased concentration of income have distorted the democratic process. Thought provoking and stimulating, this book will provide a fascinating study for students and academics with an interest in politics, economics, political economy and public policy.

Anatomy of a Rescue by Carlos M. Perez Pdf

This thesis presents a theory to help military leaders determine the best time to conduct a hostage rescue attempt. The theory is based on the phenomenon of a hostage crisis "biorhythm." According to the theory, there are four principles essential for hostage rescue mission success: surprise, intelligence, operator's skill, and deception. These principles are derived from planning models used in special operations, personal experience, and an analysis of six historical case studies. The case studies show that if any one of these four principles was overlooked, the operation was doomed. The principles have been determined to be the most critical factors that change as a hostage crisis develops. The focus of this thesis is an in-depth case study of the hostage rescue operation Chavin de Huantar in Lima, Peru. This case study presents compelling evidence to reinforce the author's hypothesis, and serves as a model for successful rescue operations. Another focus of this thesis is the use of game theory analysis during a hostage crisis. The findings of the thesis will help decision makers plan and organize hostage rescue forces to act at the appropriate time, maximizing their chances of success. In addition, it will provide a useful planning model that can be implemented effectively and accurately, presenting a clear picture of possible outcomes throughout a hostage crisis. It is hoped that this thesis will help the reader become a better strategist during the planning, preparation, and execution of a hostage rescue operation. The other case studies that are analyzed according to the biorhythm theory are Operation Eagle Claw, launched to rescue the Iran hostages in Tehran in April 1980; the De Punt train hijacking in Holland in May-June 1977; the Munich Olympics Massacre in West Germany in Sep 1972; Egypt Air Flight 648 at Malta in Nov 1978; and Operation Fire Magic, Lufthansa Flight 181, Mogadishu, Somalia in Oct 1977. Trauma Intensive Care by Samuel A. Tisherman,Raquel M. Forsythe,John A. Kellum Pdf

Management of critically-ill trauma patients presents multiple challenges that are unique to this patient population. Optimal management of the trauma patient requires establishing priorities of care, minimizing complications, and striving to return the trauma victim to the best possible functional outcome. Yet, most books devoted to trauma focus on prehospital care, the initial assessment of trauma patients, and operative management of specific injuries. Part of the Pittsburgh Critical Care Medicine series, this book will help intensivisits involved in the care of trauma patients implement best care practices for trauma victims in the intensive care unit. Chapters address issues such as: management priorities for trauma patients in the ICU, the use of monitors and drains in trauma patients, resuscitation from hemorrhagic shock, massive transfusions and coagulopathy, ventilator management of trauma patients including patients with chest trauma, as well as management ICU strategies and solutions for specific types of trauma, including traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, and burn management.

Death, Dissection and the Destitute by Ruth Richardson Pdf

In the early nineteenth century, body snatching was rife because the only corpses available for medical study were those of hanged murderers. With the Anatomy Act of 1832, however, the bodies of those who died destitute in workhouses were appropriated for dissection. At a time when such a procedure was regarded with fear and revulsion, the Anatomy Act effectively rendered dissection a punishment for poverty. Providing both historical and contemporary insights, Death, Dissection, and the Destitute opens rich new prospects in history and history of science. The new afterword draws important parallels between social and medical history and contemporary concerns regarding organs for transplant and human tissue for research.

Information Technology in Health Science Education by Edward Charles DeLand Pdf

This first volume is but an introduction to the growing use of computer-based systems in health-science education. It is unlikely that the intellectual or applied system constructs herein are either exhaustive of the field or immutable; growth is inevitable. For one thing, the field is still fractured and loosely organized, which is an inevitable description of an adolescent science in a rich mine of ideas. There is emerging, however, an organizing concept. A short look into the future indicates that educational system design will be dominated by a concept which, for want of a better term, we may call an "information system." Actually, this term de rives from an early New York World's Fair exhibition designed by Charles Eames entitled the "Informational Machine," in which the designer illustrated once again his insight into the future by showing how in a fundamental manner the digital computer promised to affect and to change our lives; and this change is by no means completed. Even during the publication of this volume, the basic sciences re quisite to the development of an information machine have evolved significantly. The three intellectual areas to watch are developments in artificial intelligence, graphics and man/machine interaction, and basic component and computer system design.

Midline Skull Base Surgery by Paolo Cappabianca,Luigi Maria Cavallo,Oreste de Divitiis,Felice Esposito Pdf

This richly illustrated book offers detailed, step-by-step guidance on surgical approaches and techniques in patients with midline tumors of the skull base. Access routes are described from both endoscopic and microscopic standpoints, via different approaches, in order to provide a 360-degree overview of contemporary midline skull base surgery. For each pathology, the multiple surgical options and their specific indications are clearly presented, with inclusion of neuroradiological images, an anatomical dissection study and operative images and videos. The book is intended for surgeons who wish to acquire knowledge and experience in skull base surgery employing endoscopic endonasal and microsurgical transcranial techniques. It is exceptional in providing an integrated perspective that encompasses traditional microsurgical approaches and the most recent endoscopic ones, with definition of the indications for and limitations of both options.
