The Monuments and the Old Testament by Ira Maurice Price Pdf

Excerpt from The Monuments and the Old Testament: Evidence From Ancient Records The new-old stories told by oriental tablets, temples, and tombs, have revealed to us a new world in the ancient Orient. These stories are the fruitage of a full half-century of exploration, excavation, discovery, and decipherment of oriental antiquities. The records of these achievements now fill scores of volumes extending through a half-century of time. Romantic and fascinating as all these volumes may be, they are manifestly not within the reach of our readers, nor are they desired by the majority of them. Scattered here and there throughout these works, we find material of especial interest to readers and students of the Bible. This information is so distributed and intermingled with a mass of other matter, that its separation and organization require long and patient toil. This volume is an attempt to furnish an answer to this oft-heard question: "Where shall I be able to find, in concise form, the best reliable information furnished by the monuments, illustrative of the Old Testament?" The Bible in Its World by K. A. Kitchen Pdf

This book is a solid exposition of the relationship between the ancient near eastern world and ancient Israel. Contrary to popular conceptions that biblical literature was a response to the post-exilic condition, Kitchen demonstrates that in the light of the explosion of knowledge on the ancient near east it has become impossible to maintain critical and minimalist positions on the history and development of Israel and its religion. If one does decide to hold such a view, Kitchen explains that doing so makes Israel the only ancient nation incapable of transmitting its history and having elaborate religious rituals, which we now know were common characteristics of ancient civilizations from even before the time of Moses. Kitchen further explains that the modern minimalist views were born out of 19th century German critical theory, at a time when such knowledge of the ancient world simply did not exist. As a result, such scholars had to perform their research in a historical vacuum, and thus reconstructed the history of ancient Israel which has turned out, in the light of later research, to totally contradict the rest of the entire ancient near east. The momentum of this 19th century research, Kitchen explains, has carried on into the 20th (and 21st) centuries, coloring the views of many modern archaeologists and Old Testament scholars. This book is very important in the light of recent literature on the subject.

Debt-Slavery in Israel and the Ancient Near East by Gregory C. Chirichigno Pdf

This original study concerns itself with the manumission laws of Exodus 20, Deuteronomy 15 and Leviticus 25. It begins with the social background to debt slavery and the socioeconomic factors encouraging the rise of debt slavery in Mesopotamia. After a comparative analysis of the Mesopotamian and biblical material Chirichigno examines the social background to debt slavery in Israel, the various slave laws in the Pentateuch (in order to delimit the chattel-slave laws from the debt-slave laws), and the biblical manumission laws themselves.

National Ideals in the Old Testament (Classic Reprint) by Henry J. Cadbury,PH D Pdf

Excerpt from National Ideals in the Old Testament It is a strange fact that so little investigation has been made of the subject. Even the study of political theory usually omits the ancient Orient altogether and begins in Greece only with Plato and Aristotle. Although the Bible has been stud ied from nearly every conceivable view-point, one cannot easily name any treatise that attempts to describe the development of its national ideals. This volume is not an effort to supply that lack so much as to call attention to it. A thorough and less popular study of the subject by a com petent Old Testament scholar would be a useful contribution to modern political thought as well as to a knowledge of the Bible. As will be evi dent to the reader, the author has essayed no independent historical or critical investigations. He is indebted to the current English and Ameri can commentaries and general works about the Old Testament such as are mentioned in the foot notes. 'in the quotations from these books the spelling Jehovah has been substituted for Yahweh and other forms of the Divine name in order to be consistent with the usage of the Bible text adopted.
