The Impact of Macroeconomic Policieson the Level of Taxation (andon the Fiscal Balance) in Developing Countries by Mr.Vito Tanzi Pdf

In recent years the level of taxation of many developing countries has changed dramatically over relatively short periods. These changes are too large and too sudden to attribute fully to a deterioration in tax administration or to changes in the traditional determinants of tax levels. The paper argues that they should be attributed mostly to macroeconomic policies. The paper discusses the connection between tax levels and (a) the real value of the official exchange rate, (b) import substitution policies, (c) trade liberalization, (d) inflation, (e) public debt, (f) financial policies. The paper concludes that more attention should be paid to those relationships and that tax reform should aim at neutralizing some of these effects.

When Good Jobs Go Bad by Jeffrey S. Rothstein Pdf

From Chinese factories making cheap toys for export, to sweatshops in Bangladesh where name-brand garments are sewn—studies on the impact of globalization on workers have tended to focus on the worst jobs and the worst conditions. But in When Good Jobs Go Bad, Jeffrey Rothstein looks at the impact of globalization on a major industry—the North American auto industry—to reveal that globalization has had a deleterious effect on even the most valued of blue-collar jobs. Rothstein argues that the consolidation of the Mexican and U.S.-Canadian auto industries, the expanding number of foreign automakers in North America, and the spread of lean production have all undermined organized labor and harmed workers. Focusing on three General Motors plants assembling SUVs—an older plant in Janesville, Wisconsin; a newer and more viable plant in Arlington, Texas; and a “greenfield site” (a brand-new, state-of-the-art facility) in Silao, Mexico—When Good Jobs Go Bad shows how global competition has made nonstop, monotonous, standardized routines crucial for the survival of a plant, and it explains why workers and their local unions struggle to resist. For instance, in the United States, General Motors forced workers to accept intensified labor by threatening to close plants, which led local unions to adopt “keep the plant open” as their main goal. At its new factory in Silao, GM had hand-picked the union—one opposed to strikes and committed to labor-management cooperation—before it hired the first worker. Rothstein’s engaging comparative analysis, which incorporates the viewpoints of workers, union officials, and management, sheds new light on labor’s loss of bargaining power in recent decades, and highlights the negative impact of globalization on all jobs, both good and bad, from the sweatshop to the assembly line.

Made-to-Order Lean by Greg Lane Pdf

Toyota Production System methods have rendered remarkable results in high-volume manufacturing plants, but they have not been fully understood and correctly applied in high-mix, low-volume environments. While lean principles do apply, the implementation methods and tools must be adapted and alternate methods embraced in a low-volume environment. This volume is specifically geared for manufacturers that have hundreds to thousands of active part numbers with few or no ongoing forecasted volumes, and for job shops that build only to order. The primary focus is eliminating non-value-added activities and instituting improvements on the most repetitive jobs, a strategy that gives you more time to produce your low-volume work or one-offs. About the author: Greg Lane is a faculty member of the Lean Enterprise Institute and an advisor to the Instituto de Lean Management in Spain. During his time with Toyota, he was one of a handful of candidates selected for a one-year training program conducted by the company’s masters. He became certified as a Toyota Production System (TPS) Key Person and continued his work with Toyota, training others in TPS. He has been highly active in working on implementing lean around the world, supporting large and small companies alike. In 1998, he began to focus his lean endeavors on meeting the specific needs of high-mix, low-volume enterprises. During his time as an independent consultant, Greg purchased and operated his own manufacturing company, which specialized in fast turnaround on high-mix, low-volume parts. Greg used TPS to grow the business and nearly double its sales. Greg and his associates have experience not only at adapting the methods contained in this book, but also in applying other tools that are too numerous to detail here. Night of Rain by J. C. Owens Pdf

An assassin, an emperor, and his Chosen. Will their bonds survive intrigue, exile, and war...? Exiled by the emperor he loves, Hredeen Leesian chooses to travel to the once-peaceful kingdom of Bhantan to stop a brutal invasion. Armed with only a blade and his skills as an assassin, he means to stop Raine's cruel brothers from killing and looting their way across the kingdom. But as Hredeen hunts his prey, he discovers another assassin who knows the darkest secrets of their guild. Now Hredeen fears he cannot return to the secretive fortress where he was trained in the killing arts. His world has been shattered by Taldan's rejection, and he no longer has a home at the imperial capital...or in Taldan's heart. Taldan Anrodnes has ascended to emperor, and the magic of the Illumitae has merged with his body and mind. After nearly being killed in a vicious attack, Taldan has begun forging a deeper bond with Raine, the young man who saved his life by becoming his Chosen. Taldan might now be one of the most powerful men in the world, but he's haunted by memories of Hredeen. He can't forget the look on Hredeen's face when he cast his friend and lover out for his deception. The assassin betrayed his trust, lied to him, and—like Raine—saved his life. Now, beneath the weight of the emperor's golden mask, he wrestles with his growing power and the threats against his empire, his life, and his sanity. Raine Yoldis is now bound as Chosen to the brilliant man he has always admired. But he struggles to find his own path as Chosen, especially when Hredeen's shadow lies so heavily over Taldan. He can't escape the fear that he isn't needed and will be pushed aside even as the Illumitae's magic changes them both in unforeseen ways. The gods might have chosen him to be with Taldan, but can he win the man's love, especially when the emperor's growing obsession could tear everything to pieces? Meanwhile, Prince Zaran leads the Anrodnes army in a desperate pursuit of the rebel invaders, shocked by the destruction they have left in their path. As the rebels advance, diplomat Isnay undertakes a vital mission to bring aid to Bhantan—only the young, fiery king is like no noble he has ever met. Inside the empire, Naral struggles to uncover a new plot against his emperor with the help of a brash thief, and the War Guild waits in the wings, its motives unclear, yet a growing threat to the very existence of the empire...

Revolution! 200,000 Bc by Steve Fleming Pdf

On a small spacecraft orbiting Earth, Caligastia faced the breathtaking view of space. "My third in command will lack experience," this new prince of Earth reported to his superior, Lucifer. "He will be easy to manipulate." At The Academy of the Universe, Mendal nervously waited for the details of his unexpected assignment as a Life Carrier to help establish life on Earth. Mendal couldn't understand why they had asked for him. He hadn't even finished his schooling, which was normally required, especially for assignment on such a hostile sphere where no intelligent life yet existed. Mendal, now third in command on Earth, circa 200,000 BC, can't let what he saw on a probability computer influence his command duties; this process of uplifting primitive beings to a higher level has been used on literally millions of planets in the Nebadon universe alone. But in no other time in history has a planet been so firmly gripped by rebellion: the rebellion of Lucifer!
