Of Time and Knoxville by Linda Behrend Pdf

"This scholarly edition of Anne Armstrong's autobiography, Of Time and Knoxville, published here for the first time, provides a snapshot of Knoxville in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as the city was becoming a modern, industrialized urban center. Armstrong moved to Knoxville as a teenager in 1885 and spent her early formative years there. Her memoir discusses the University of Tennessee, a growing west Knoxville (Cumberland Avenue and Kingston Pike, in particular), and other notable areas in what we now know as the university and downtown districts. Armstrong is also author of This Day and Time, an Appalachian novel credited as the first fictional account to depict the region realistically. Linda Behrend has written a critical introduction and meticulously annotated Armstrong's work"--

British and American School Stories, 1910–1960 by Nancy G. Rosoff,Stephanie Spencer Pdf

This book examines school and college fiction for girls in Britain and the United States, written in the first half of the twentieth century, to explore the formation and ideologies of feminine identity. Nancy G. Rosoff and Stephanie Spencer develop a transnational framework that recognises how both constructed and essential femininities transcend national boundaries. The book discusses the significance and performance of female friendship across time and place, which is central to the development of the genre, and how it functioned as an important means of informal education. Stories by Jessie Graham Flower, Pauline Lester, Alice Ross Colver, Elinor Brent-Dyer, and Dorita Fairlie Bruce are set within their historical context and then used to explore aspects of sociability, authority, responsibility, domesticity, and possibility. The distinctiveness of this book stems from the historical analysis of these sources, which have so far primarily been treated by literary scholars within their national context. Winner of the History of Education Society Anne Bloomfield Prize for the best book on history of education published in English 2017-19

Public Medievalists, Racism, and Suffrage in the American Women’s College by Mary Dockray-Miller Pdf

This study, part of growing interest in the study of nineteenth-century medievalism and Anglo-Saxonism, closely examines the intersections of race, class, and gender in the teaching of Anglo-Saxon in the American women’s colleges before World War I, interrogating the ways that the positioning of Anglo-Saxon as the historical core of the collegiate English curriculum also silently perpetuated mythologies about Manifest Destiny, male superiority, and the primacy of northern European ancestry in United States culture at large. Analysis of college curricula and biographies of female professors demonstrates the ways that women used Anglo-Saxon as a means to professional opportunity and political expression, especially in the suffrage movement, even as that legitimacy and respectability was freighted with largely unarticulated assumptions of racist and sexist privilege. The study concludes by connecting this historical analysis with current charged discussions about the intersections of race, class, and gender on college campuses and throughout US culture.
