This 2nd book is a continuation of the 1st book. The index at the back of the book is brilliant. The contents list, at the front of the book, is in alphabetical order, and is a list of the horses names, gives paragraph numbers. Whereas the Index gives the Rider/Owner in alphanumeric order and gives paragraph numbers. So if you do not know the name of a persons horse you would look up the person in the Index and it would indicate the paragraph numbers to find the answer. For instance: Steptoe and Son would be under 'S' in the Index and this would lead you to 'Hercules', the strong man from Greek Mythology. Or Toy Story 2 would lead you to 'Bullseye' Books 3 and 4 are in the process of compiling, it’s a “Never Ending Story”.

It is stated that horsemen in large numbers opposed the landing of the Romans, and we learn from the Venerable Bede that in a.d. 631, in the reign of Edwin the Great, the English first began to saddle horses. The earliest mention of running horses in England refers to those sent in the ninth century by Hugh, founder of the Royal House of Capet in France, as a present to King Athelstan, whose sister, Ethelswitha, he was desirous of marrying. In the reign of William the Conqueror, Roger de Bellesme, Earl of Shrewsbury, imported some stallions from Spain, and we find their produce celebrated after wards by Drayton the poetf fitz-stephen, a monk of Canterbury, and secretary to the celebrated Arch bishop a'beckett, in the reign of Henry II., refers to some rough-and-ready races. He was a chestnut horse, with white near hind leg, about in height, and made his first appear ance on the turf as a two-year-old (according to the then existing Southern rule of calculating ages), on the Metairie Course, New Orleans, April 1853, in a sweep-stakes for that age, Winning both heats, in 1:48fi - lz45i, and beating Conrad the Corsair, Argent and Zero. The ensuing Fall, he started for and won the sweepstakes for three-year-olds, two-mile heats, Pharsalia Course, Natchez, carrying 86 lbs. Beating his two opponents, Atala and Conrad the Corsair, in 3:45i - 3z46i. On Jan. He beat the famous mare Sallie Ward, by Glencoe, and another, in a race of mile heats, over the same course, in and just one week afterwards beat Mary Taylor, Joe Blackburn and Medina, two-mile beats, in 31455 - 3252i. Seven days afterwards, he won the two-mile heat purse, same course, in beating the Cora Colt, by Gallatin. On April 1, 1854, on the Metairie Course, New Orleans, he started for the Great Post Stakes, of $5000, each, four mile heats, against Lexington, Highlander and Arrow, over a heavy track. Highlander was the favorite, but Lexington won the first heat by three lengths in Lecompte second and Arrow distanced. Lexington won.
