Anti-Semitism and the Foundations of Christianity by Alan T. Davies Pdf

No one would disagree with the assessment that Christians, over the centuries, have been guilty of anti-Semitism, sometimes with barbarous results. The real question is not whether individual Christians have been anti-Semites, but whether anti-Semitism is somehow ingrained in the very roots of Christianity, in its very essence. Rosemary Ruether has declared that anti-Semitism is the other side of Christology, the inevitable fallout of placing Jesus at the right hand of the Father. The contributors to this volume consider that larger question from several vantage points. Their findings are vitally important for Christians and Jews alike. Not only do they explore the beginnings of Christian anti-Semitism, they help us understand the dynamics of the religious impulse for all peoples and all times. The contributors to this volume include John C. Meagher, Douglas R.A. Hare, Lloyd Gaston, John T. Townsend, David Efroymson, Monika K. Hellwig, Gregory Baum, John T. Pawlikowski, Douglass J. Hall, Alan T. Davies, Terence R. Anderson, and Rosemary R. Ruether.

Foundations of Christianity by Karl Kautsky Pdf

Kautsky is probably the first Marxist to interest himself both in the movement and the enigmatic personality of the crucified prophet. His "Foundations of Christianity" is one of the most popular Marxist theoretical works due to the interest of socialist militants to see a vision of the origins of Christianity which permits the modern workers movement to appropriate to itself the figure of Jesus as a prophet and martyr for the proletarian cause. This collection of learned essays helps to clarify the extent to which we can speak of the parting of the ways between Christianity and Judaism in the period spanned by two Jewish revolts against Rome. Twelve internationally respected scholars carefully analyze the chief Jewish and Christian documents and traditions relating to the period, drawing out their significance for the topic. The result is an integrated and comprehensive study of the diverging trajectories of Judaism and early Christianity. Contributors: Philip S. Alexander Neville Birdsall Andrew Chester James D. G. Christian Antisemitism by Michael L. Brown Pdf

Hate isn't a thing from history. The Jewish people and Israel have been described as "a dominant and moving force behind the present and coming evils of our day"; "a monstrous system of evil...[that] will destroy us and our children" if not resisted; and a group that seeks "the annihilation of almost every Gentile man, woman, and child and the establishment of a satanic Jewish-led global dictatorship." What's worse is that these comments were all made by professing Christians. In Christian Antisemitism, respected Messianic Bible scholar Michael L. Brown, PhD, documents shocking examples of modern "Christian" antisemitism and exposes the lies that support them. Carefully researched, this book shows that church-based antisemitism is no longer a thing of the past. Rather, a dangerous, shocking tide of "Christian" antisemitism has begun to rise. In Christian Antisemitism, Dr. Brown shows you how to stem this tide now and overcome the evil of "Christian" antisemitism with the powerful love of the cross! This book will show you how to confront everyday antisemitism in all areas of your life and become a champion for the people of Israel.

Anti-Judaism in Early Christianity: Paul and the Gospels by Peter Richardson,David Granskou,Stephen G. Wilson,Canadian Corporation for Studies in Religion Pdf

The period since the close of World War II has been agonizingly introspective—not least because of the pain of reassessing Christianity’s attitude to Judaism. The early Christian materials have often been examined to assess their role in the long-standing negative attitude of Christians to Jews. The motivation for the early church’s sometimes harsh attitude was partly theological—it needed to define itself over against its parent—and partly sociological—it needed to make clear the line that divided the fledgling group of Christian believers fromt he group with which it was most likely to be confused. This collection of studies emphasizes the context and history of early Christianity in reconsidering many of the classic passages that have contributed to the development of anti-Judaism in Christianity. The volume opens with an essay that clearly delineates the state of the question of anti-Judaism in early Christianity. Then follow discussions of specific passages in the writings of Paul as well as the Gospels.

Christianity Without Antisemitism by Robert Andrew Everett Pdf

This book is an intellectual biography of James William Parkes, one of the true pioneers in the field of Jewish-Christian relations and the study of antisemitism. This ordained Anglican priest made significant and controversial contributions as both historian and theologian, carefully documenting how Christianity from its earliest centries to the present has continuously misunderstood the nature and history of Judaism and Jewish history and to shake off historical and theological misconceptions that have prevented a clear understanding of the Bible and of Christian theological traditions. By placing these aspects of Parkes' work in context, Robert Everett shows that Parkes was not simply a 'philosemite' but rather a Modernist theologican who applied his Modernist theological critique of Christianisty to the question of Jewish-Christian relations. In writing this book, Robert Everett researched the life and work of his subject thoroughly and became very well acquained with him personally. Actively involved in discussions between Jews and Christians, Everett has written a book that opens a door to the deeper understanding of James Parkes.

Religious Identity and the Problem of Historical Foundation by Judith Frishman,Willemien Otten,Gerard Rouwhorst Pdf

The essays collected in this book deal with the question how, throughout the history of Christianity, Christian communities have tried to construct their identity by anchoring their views in authoritative and normative sources. The main focus is upon the problem of historical foundation through textual traditions but other authoritative sources ( role of religious leaders; ritual traditions) are taken into consideration as well. The book takes as its point of departure the fact that with the rise of modernity the former dependence of western church and society on authoritative sources was called into question. Ever since, appeal to such sources is no longer self-evident; at times it is even regarded as problematic. Based on this radical change brought about by modernity, the book is divided in two main parts. The first part deals with the question how Christian churches and confessions ( Roman-Catholic and Protestant) confronted modernity and which role was played by authoritative sources in the tradition to the modern era. Special attention will be paid to the way in which Judaism reacted to many of the same impulses, both societal and religious ones. The second part deals with the premodern period, from early Christianity to the post-Reformation era, and focuses on the role authoritative traditions, textual or otherwise, have played in providing various Christian communities with a relative stable identity. The aim of the book is to elucidate processes resulting in the formation of authoritative traditions as well as the effects of these traditions on the identity of Christian and Jewish communities. In addition, the book attempts to clarify the various ways in which Christian and Jewish communities have reacted to the growing suspicion authoritative traditions aroused in the western world since the rise of modernity.

The Satanizing of the Jews by Joel Carmichael Pdf

The literature about anti-Semitism is vast. However, much of what has been written about it takes the existence of this phenomenon for granted, giving us a history of anti-Semitism without explaining what it really is. Carmichael's treatise is different. It is not primarily a history of atrocities--it goes to the roots, thus clearing the confusion about the distinction between mystical anti-Semitism and other forms of racism. Mystical anti-Semitism is a singular idea which culminated in the Holocaust and is still alive today. Carmichael contends that it has nothing to do with a personal hatred of the Jews. He argues that the view of anti-Semitism as being directed against real-life Jews has in fact helped objectify the irrational hatred that is at its core. Anti-Semitism received its mystical element when the Church Fathers transformed historical theory into theology. St. Paul believed in the imminence of the Kingdom of God which would be the end of history and reverse the injustice done to the Jews. To him, God's reentering history was delayed only until the God-forces in this world had finally defeated the Devil-forces. Yet the world did not end, and in the wake of Rome's crushing victory over Judea in the Roman-Jewish War, the idea of the Kingdom of God was postponed indefinitely. Instead, the Universal Church took over God's place in the world, and the Devil's role was assigned to those who rejected Jesus and have since been blamed for his death: the Jews. The rise of Christianity established anti-Semitism politically; it finally gained a broad, popular basis during the Crusades, eventually leading to international prosecutions. Ghettoes were established as a consequence of theReformation. Carmichael describes the waning of theology's influence during the 18th century, which only caused the concepts of "Jew" and "Jewish" to become abstract and ultimately being equated with Pure Evil; the development of the concept of race in the 19th century, which turned anti-Semitism from a theological notion into a biological one, as exemplified most radically and horribly by Hitler; and Communism's contribution to the perseverance of anti-Semitism. In an epilogue Carmichael distinguishes mystical anti-Semitism from the Arab opposition to the State of Israel, and examines what the future has in store for the Jews.

A Jew Answers Anti-Semitism by Marcus Ravagae,H. James Pdf

Angered by growing anti-Semitism from Christians in the early 20th century, the author pointed out that if people were looking for a "Jewish conspiracy" then they should stop talking about Communism or Capitalism, but face up to the fact that Christianity-and therefore the post-Roman Western Civilization-has a Jewish spiritual, historical, intellectual and even moral basis. Recommendation Whether to Confiscate, Destroy, and Burn All Jewish Books by Johann Reuchlin Pdf

While he was condemned himself for his stand, the book opened the eyes of scholars and political leaders to the need to understand and appreciate the wealth of religious truth and insight in the Talmud and other works. Reuchlin did not stop anti-Semitism in the Reformation by either Catholics or Protestants, but he stemmed the advance of those vowed to wipe Judaism out in Europe and began the long, slow movement in the West to appreciate and learn what Judaism really was."--BOOK JACKET.

Protestant Bible Scholarship: Antisemitism, Philosemitism and Anti-Judaism by Arjen F. Bakker,René Bloch,Yael Fisch,Paula Fredriksen,Hindy Najman Pdf

Published in Open Access with the support of the Swiss National Science Foundation Historical criticism of the Bible emerged in the context of protestant theology and is confronted in every aspect of its study with otherness: the Jewish people and their writings. However, despite some important exceptions, there has been little sustained reflection on the ways in which scholarship has engaged, and continues to engage, its most significant Other. This volume offers reflections on anti-Semitism, philo-Semitism and anti-Judaism in biblical scholarship from the 19th century to the present. The essays in this volume reflect on the past and prepare a pathway for future scholarship that is mindful of its susceptibility to violence and hatred.
