Anzac's Long Shadow by James Brown Pdf

‘A century ago we got it wrong. We sent thousands of young Australians on a military operation that was barely more than a disaster. It’s right that a hundred years later we should feel strongly about that. But have we got our remembrance right? What lessons haven’t we learned about war, and what might be the cost of our Anzac obsession?’ Defence analyst and former army officer James Brown believes that Australia is expending too much time, money and emotion on the Anzac legend, and that today’s soldiers are suffering for it. Vividly evoking the war in Afghanistan, Brown reveals the experience of the modern soldier. He looks closely at the companies and clubs that trade on the Anzac story. He shows that Australians spend a lot more time looking after dead warriors than those who are alive. We focus on a cult of remembrance, instead of understanding a new world of soldiering and strategy. And we make it impossible to criticise the Australian Defence Force, even when it makes the same mistakes over and over. None of this is good for our soldiers or our ability to deal with a changing world. With respect and passion, Brown shines a new light on Anzac’s long shadow and calls for change. "Bold, original, challenging - James Brown tackles the burgenoning Anzac industry and asks Australians to re-examine how we think about the military and modern-day service." - Leigh Sales "The best book yet written, not just on Australia's Afghan war, but on war itself and the creator/destroyer myth of Anzac." - John Birmingham James Brown is a former Australian Army officer, who commanded a cavalry troop in Southern Iraq, served on the Australian taskforce headquarters in Baghdad, and was attached to Special Forces in Afghanistan. Today he is the Military Fellow at the Lowy Institute for International Policy where he works on strategic military issues and defence policy. He also chairs the NSW Government’s Contemporary Veterans Forum. He lives in Sydney.

Anzacs, the Media and the Great War by John Frank Williams Pdf

Historian and photographer Williams (Germanic studies, U. of New South Wales) looks at how the media during World War I glorified the prowess and exaggerated the successes of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corp as part of the country's war effort, and how later historians and the public have mistaken the propaganda for journalism. The First Ashore by Peter R. Burgess Pdf

This book recounts the life stories of a small group of Queensland 9th Battalion Anzacs who hold the unique honour of being the first soldiers ashore at the Gallipoli landing in 1915. For World War 1 Diggers, their identity was a serious and sometimes contentious matter of battalion pride. Over the decades, these first Anzacs have gained a significant place in the Anzac Legend. Extensive research has confidently identified 26 of the approximate 30 Anzacs who were in this first boat ashore. Their life stories are retold to intimately reveal the war experiences of ordinary Australians. Heroic actions and horrendous ordeals are highlighted. Mateship, self-sacrifice, dedication to duty and changing identity are recurring themes. While many of those who survived returned home to broken lives, for some, the unique and proud identity as first ashore, 'original' Anzacs inspired strength and leadership. Important contributions were made to the post-war community and veteran affairs.

Anzacs at War by George Low Pdf

For generations of men whose obsession with military history was triggered by reading war comics in their youth, here at last is COMMANDO comic book's first-ever collection of ANZAC war stories. ANZACS AT WAR showcases the best Aussie and Kiwi fighting action - on land, sea and air - from over 40 years of COMMANDO comics - and 25% bigger than the originals, for maximum visceral impact! Chosen by current editor George Low, the brilliant Antipodean yarns in this brand-new classic collection range from sub-hunting sorties in the Pacific, through jungle island combat against merciless soldiers from the Land of the Rising Sun, to commando raids in the North African dessert and flak-peppered bombing runs on Germany. Evocatively titled stories such as 'Outback Arm', 'Killing Zone', 'Regans's Raiders' and 'Island of Fear' show fearless ANZACS in their finest hours, giving a good, honest drubbing to fanatical Fritzies and nefarious Nipponese. For everyone whose comic-book battle lust has ever been stirred by Nazi cries of 'Auslander Schwienhund!' or Japanese shrieks of 'Banzai!', ANZACS AT WAR will transport them right back into fictional combat situations they'd forgotten were so entertaining, and a whole new generation can discover how COMMANDO turns ordinary men into heroes. 'AAARRGGH!'

The Secrets of the Anzacs by Raden Dunbar Pdf

Here is a truly astonishing statistic: during World War I, about 60,000 soldiers in the Australian army were treated by army doctors in Egypt, Europe, and Australia for venereal diseases — almost the same number of diggers who were killed during the war. This silent, secret scourge took hold in Cairo in 1914, and continued until 1919 when survivors of the war waited in Europe to be repatriated. Nobody wanted to know about it, at first — and the general public back home was, of course, kept in the dark. Moralistic commanders in Egypt ordered strict punishments for men with VD, and the young victims were sent back to Australia in disgrace, most of them inventing amazing excuses for their inexplicable return. Many of them re-enlisted, but some felt they had to change their names to do so. Medical officers couldn’t afford to be puritanical, though. They tried to prevent the diseases, as well to cure them with toxic drugs in army VD hospitals in Cairo, in England, and at Langwarrin, near Melbourne. Eventually, even the army had to face facts, and, after the AIF arrived in Europe in 1916, commanders ordered that huge quantities of prophylactics be distributed, and that safe-sex education be given as well. The Secrets of the Anzacs reveals all these secrets, and more. But perhaps the most remarkable revelation it contains is that many of the re-enlisted men went on to perform deeds of battlefield bravery — even, in one case, to the extent of being awarded a Victoria Cross under a false name. This fascinating book also contains numerous original photographs, artworks, and documents, most of which have never been published before.

The Anzac Girls by Peter Rees Pdf

The harrowing, dramatic and profoundly moving story of the Australian and New Zealand nurses who served in the Great War. Now a major six-part television series. By the end of the Great War, forty-five Australian and New Zealand nurses had died on overseas service and over two hundred had been decorated. These were the women who left for war looking for adventure and romance but were soon confronted with challenges for which their civilian lives could never have prepared them. Their strength and dignity were remarkable. Using diaries and letters, Peter Rees takes us into the hospital camps and the wards, and the tent surgeries on the edge of some of the most horrific battlefronts of human history. But he also allows the friendships and loves of these courageous and compassionate women to shine through and enrich our experience. Profoundly moving, Anzac Girls is a story of extraordinary courage and humanity shown by a group of women whose contribution to the Anzac legend has barely been recognised in our history. Peter Rees has changed that understanding forever.

The Landing at ANZAC 1915 by Chris Roberts Pdf

The Landing at ANZAC, 1915 challenges many of the cherished myths of the most celebrated battle in Australian and New Zealand history – myths that have endured for almost a century. Told from both the ANZAC and Turkish perspectives, this meticulously researched account questions several of the claims of Charles Bean’s magisterial and much-quoted Australian official history and presents a fresh examination of the evidence from a range of participants. The Landing at ANZAC, 1915 reaches a carefully argued conclusion in which Roberts draws together the threads of his analysis delivering some startling findings. But the author’s interest extends beyond the simple debunking of hallowed myths, and he produces a number of lessons from the armies of today. This is a book that pulls the Gallipoli campaign into the modern era and provides a compelling argument for its continuing relevance. In short, today’s armies must never forget the lessons of Gallipoli.
