Making Marks by Will Jones Pdf

A rich and varied glimpse into the creative processes of a broad array of contemporary architects. While digital technologies have pushed the boundaries of architectural creation, conceiving an original and appropriate design is as challenging as it has always been. As this book shows, however, a recent return to the basic act of putting pen or pencil to paper has produced some of the most successful buildings of the past decade. Making Marks follows the highly successful Architects’ Sketchbooks, which presented the rich breadth of sketches created by contemporary architects post digital revolution. Taking a post-digital perspective, the sixty renowned architects whose work is collected here show how drawing and new forms of manual presentation have been refined since the reawakening of this basic technique. Revealing why hand-drawing still matters, this global survey presents the freehand drawings, vibrant watercolors, and abstract impressions of a broad and eclectic array of rising talents and well-known names, including Jun Igarashi, Deborah Saunt, Daniel Libeskind, Meg Graham, and Brian MacKay-Lyons, to name but a few. Author Will Jones’s introduction reviews the importance of the physical sketch and its vital role in the creative process. Spanning diverse approaches, styles, and physical forms, Making Marks is not merely a compendium of the preoccupations and stylistics of current practice, but a rich and varied insight into architectural creativity.

Recto Verso: Redefining the Sketchbook by Dr Angela Bartram,Dr Douglas Gittens,Dr Nader El-Bizri Pdf

Bringing together a broad range of contributors including art, architecture, and design academic theorists and historians, in addition to practicing artists, architects, and designers, this volume explores the place of the sketchbook in contemporary art and architecture. Drawing upon a diverse range of theories, practices, and reflections common to the contemporary conceptualisation of the sketchbook and its associated environments, it offers a dialogue in which the sketchbook can be understood as a pivotal working tool that contributes to the creative process and the formulation and production of visual ideas. Along with exploring the theoretical, philosophical, psychological, and curatorial implications of the sketchbook, the book addresses emergent digital practices by way of examining contemporary developments in sketchbook productions and pedagogical applications. Consequently, these more recent developments question the validity of the sketchbook as both an instrument of practice and creativity, and as an educational device. International in scope, it not only explores European intellectual and artistic traditions, but also intercultural and cross-cultural perspectives, including reviews of practices in Chinese artworks or Islamic calligraphy, and situational contexts that deal with historical examples, such as Roman art, or modern practices in geographical-cultural regions like Pakistan.

France Sketchbooks by Laurie Olin Pdf

For centuries artists and designers have recorded places, people, and life in travel sketchbooks. Over a period of fifty years, Laurie Olin, one of America's most distinguished landscape architects, has recorded aspects of France: its cities and countryside, streets and cafes, ancient ruins, vineyards, and parks--from humble to grand, things that interested his designer's eye--taking the time to see things carefully. Paris in its seasons, agriculture in Provence and Bordeaux, trees, dogs, and fountains, all are noted over the years in watercolor or pen and ink. Originally intended for the pleasure of merely being there as well as self-education, this personal selection from his many sketchbooks is accompanied by transcriptions of notes and observations, along with introductory remarks for the different regions included: Paris, Haute Loire, Provence, Haute Provence, Normandy, Aquitaine, and Entre des Meures.

"Four Sketchbooks" by Adolfo Natalini Pdf

Founder of Superstudio and initiator of the so-called 'Radical Architecture' movement (one of the most important avant-garde movements of the sixties and seventies), Adolfo Natalini describes years of designed and constructed architectural projects through his preferred media: drawings and sketches shown in his Black notebooks (Quaderni Neri). This book contains many of his numerous designs and constructed projects, witness to almost fifty years of his career, collected in four new Notebooks. The first section describes the experiences shaping Natalini's education, including his studies and work at Superstudio and the 'Pistioia school'. The other chapters present his designs and completed projects, divided by geographic area and then in chronological order. The Italian, German and Dutch sketchbooks show the work he considers the best representations of his career, told through images, technical drawings and original sketches from his famed sketchbooks. Many excerpts from interviews with the Natalini are interspersed throughout, complementing and tying everything together. This significant book helps us understand a key player in Italian architecture, his career, how his ideas evolved, and how he sees and understands his work and designs. After his experience as a painter, Adolfo Natalini graduated in architecture in Florence in 1966 and founded Superstudio (with Cristiano Toraldo di Francia, Gian Piero Frassinelli, Roberto and Alessandro Magris and Alessandro Poli). The group was the initiator of the so-called Radical Architecture, one of the most important avant-garde movements of the 1960s and 1970s. He was full professor of architectural design at the Florence Faculty of Architecture. 153 colour, 89 b/w images

Rice's Architectural Primer by Matthew Rice Pdf

RICE'S ARCHITECTURAL PRIMER covers the grammar and vocabulary of British buildings, explaining the evolution of styles from Norman castles to Norman Foster. Its aim is to enable the reader to recognise, understand and date any British building. As Matthew Rice says, ‘Once you can speak any language, conversation can begin, but without it communications can only be brief and brutish. The same is the case with Architecture: an inability to describe the component parts of a building leaves one tongue-tied and unable to begin to discuss what is or is not exciting, dull or peculiar about it.' RICE'S ARCHITECTURAL PRIMER will explain the language of architecture. With it in your hand, pocket or car, buildings will break down beguilingly into their component parts, ready for inspection and discussion. There will be no more references to that curly bit on top of the thing with the square protrusions. Ungainly and inept descriptions will be a thing of the past and, fluent in the world of volutes, hood moulds, lobed architraves and bucrania, you will be able to leave a cathedral or country house with as much to talk about as a film or play. RICE'S ARCHITECTURAL PRIMER starts with an explanation of the basic ‘Grammar' of buildings: elevation, plan, roof, gable and eave. This will enable the reader to better make use of what is to follow. It will also cover the Orders of Architecture – Doric, Tuscan, Ionic, Corinthian and Composite – so that the vital basics of Classicism are covered. Following this is the ‘Vocabulary'. This will be a chronological reference section covering, period by period, the windows, doors and doorcases, columns, chimneys, arches, balustrades and pediments that make up the built environment.

Working in Architecture by Jamie Fobert Architects,Jamie Fobert Pdf

Jamie Fobert Architects (JFA) has gained a reputation for innovative and inspiring architectural design for houses, retail and the arts. Working in Architecture sets out to convey not only the finished product of an architecture practice but also to make plain the process of design inherent in the work. With introductory texts by Joseph Rykwert and George Baird, the book is divided into four parts, each of which documents a set of projects by JFA, following the sequence of the design process from sketches to development to completed work. The practice's residential projects are celebrated for their sensitivity to the historic context, which they sympathetically partner with contemporary design concerns. Retail projects, for clients including Selfridges, Givenchy and Versace, have offered the opportunity to explore new ideas and experiment with materiality. The firm has also worked with a number of artists and key arts institutions such as Tate Britain, Tate Modern, Frieze Art Fair, the V&A and the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art in Moscow. The practice has won three major public commissions for extensions to Tate St Ives, Charleston Farmhouse and Kettle's Yard Gallery. Following his graduation from the University of Toronto, Fobert went on to head David Chipperfield Architects' Berlin office before teaching at European schools including the Architectural Association, London, and University of Lausanne, and establishing his own practice in London in 1996. JFA has garnered several awards including the Manser Medal; and the RIBA and English Heritage Award for Building in an Historic Context.
