Artificial Intelligence in Real-Time Control 1991 by M.G. Rodd,G. J. Suski Pdf

This set of proceedings contains the most significant papers presented at the third IFAC Workshop on Artificial Intelligence in Real-time Control, which was held from September 23-25, 1991 in the USA. In this workshop, although there were still some "exotic" applications, a more practical view of the applications and limitations of current AI technology dominated the participants' discussions. With its resultant focus on reliability and safety considerations, the workshop posed as many questions as it answered. It provides an excellent mirror of the current state-of-the-art which these proceedings are intended to illustrate.

Artificial Intelligence in Real-Time Control by M. G. Rodd,G. J. Suski Pdf

Artificial Intelligence in Real-Time Control documents the proceedings of the IFAC Workshop held in Clyne Castle, Swansea, UK, 21-23 September 1988. It includes two keynote addresses that discussed architectural issues for expert systems in real-time control; the problem of representing knowledge and reasoning; and the problems encountered in obtaining such information. Other papers contained in these proceedings are representative of the major research bodies active throughout the world in the application of AI techniques in real-time control, although it was inevitable that a Europe-based conference would highlight the work of the European groups. While AI is clearly still in the process of establishing itself, it is undoubtedly a major new area of engineering endeavor. Practical experience is still relatively limited, and many of the results discussed at this event were obtained through simulation or, in a few cases, from reduced practical experience. The importance, though, lies in the fact that many countries are pouring extensive resources into the attempt to control difficult processes by using AI techniques. The wide cross section of interest was demonstrated by the fact that many diverse industries were represented at the workshop—ranging from power-systems control to telecommunications, and into the steel industry.

Papers presented at the workshop are representative of the state-of-the art of artificial intelligence in real-time control. The issues covered included the use of AI methods in the design, implementation, testing, maintenance and operation of real-time control systems. While the focus was on the fundamental aspects of the methodologies and technologies, there were some applications papers which helped to put emerging theories into perspective. The four main subjects were architectural issues; knowledge - acquisition and learning; techniques; and scheduling, monitoring and management.

Paperback. The Symposium on Artificial Intelligence in Real-Time Control 97 (AIRTC '97) was the seventh in the series of symposia and workshops under the sponsorship of the International Federation of Automatic Control's (IFAC) Co-ordinating Committee in Computer Control and of the Technical Committee on Artificial Intelligence in Real-Time Control.Artificial Intelligence methods, including expert systems, artificial neural networks, fuzzy systems and genetic algorithms, are penetrating almost every field of engineering. These methods have shown their possible application in control, monitoring and supervising tasks which are difficult or impossible to solve when using conventional techniques. We have now come to a stage where there is a need to discuss and present these methods in a broader framework, not only showing their concepts and available algorithms, but also their relative benefits, advantages and disadvantages. This was the purpose of th

Fuzzy Model Identification by Hans Hellendoorn,Dimiter Driankov Pdf

During the past few years two principally different approaches to the design of fuzzy controllers have emerged: heuristics-based design and model-based design. The main motivation for the heuristics-based design is given by the fact that many industrial processes are still controlled in one of the following two ways: - The process is controlled manually by an experienced operator. - The process is controlled by an automatic control system which needs manual, on-line 'trimming' of its parameters by an experienced operator. In both cases it is enough to translate in terms of a set of fuzzy if-then rules the operator's manual control algorithm or manual on-line 'trimming' strategy in order to obtain an equally good, or even better, wholly automatic fuzzy control system. This implies that the design of a fuzzy controller can only be done after a manual control algorithm or trimming strategy exists. It is admitted in the literature on fuzzy control that the heuristics-based approach to the design of fuzzy controllers is very difficult to apply to multiple-inputjmultiple-output control problems which represent the largest part of challenging industrial process control applications. Furthermore, the heuristics-based design lacks systematic and formally verifiable tuning tech niques. Also, studies of the stability, performance, and robustness of a closed loop system incorporating a heuristics-based fuzzy controller can only be done via extensive simulations.

Validation and Verification of Knowledge Based Systems by Anca Vermesan,Frans Coenen Pdf

Knowledge-based (KB) technology is being applied to complex problem-solving and critical tasks in many application domains. Concerns have naturally arisen as to the dependability of knowledge-based systems (KBS). As with any software, attention to quality and safety must be paid throughout development of a KBS and rigorous verification and validation (V&V) techniques must be employed. Research in V&V of KBS has emerged as a distinct field only in the last decade and is intended to address issues associated with quality and safety aspects of KBS and to credit such applications with the same degree of dependability as conventional applications. In recent years, V&V of KBS has been the topic of annual workshops associated with the main AI conferences, such as AAAI, IJACI and ECAI. Validation and Verification of Knowledge Based Systems contains a collection of papers, dealing with all aspects of KBS V&V, presented at the Fifth European Symposium on Verification and Validation of Knowledge Based Systems and Components (EUROVAV'99 - which was held in Oslo in the summer of 1999, and was sponsored by Det Norske Veritas and the British Computer Society's Specialist Group on Expert Systems (SGES).

Self-Adaptive Software by Robert Laddaga,Paul Robertson,Howard E. Shrobe Pdf

The 18 revised full papers presented in this book together with an introductory survey were carefully reviewed and constitute the documentation of the Second International Workshop on Self-adaptive Software, IWSAS 2001, held in Balatonfüred, Hungary in May 2001. Self-adaptive software evaluates its own behavior and changes it when the evaluation indicates that the software does not accomplish what it is intended to do or when better functionality or better performance is possible. The self-adaptive approach in software engineering builds on well known dynamic features familiar to Lisp or Java programmes and aims at improving the robustness of software systems by gradually adding new features of self-adaption or autonomy.
