At Home Afloat by Nancy Pagh Pdf

Considering accounts written by Northwest Coast marine tourists between 1861 and 1990, Nancy Pagh examines the ways that gender influences the roles women play at sea, the spaces they occupy on boats, and the language they use to describe their experiences, their natural surroundings, and their contact with Native peoples. Unique features of this book include its interdisciplinary nature and its combination of scholarly information and a style that general readers will appreciate. The text is engaging but also serves to make fresh and relevant links between scholarship in diverse areas of inquiry; for example, Western Canadian and American history, feminist geography, post-colonial theory, and women and environments.

A Home Afloat by Gary Cookson Pdf

Announcing the launch of a new book celebrating the diversity of living on the water. Gary Cookson interviewed the owners of a variety of floating homes to find out why they chose to live afloat, what decisions they made to achieve their dream and discussed the pros and cons of the lifestyle. This book takes a peek through the portholes of some great floating homes. From permanently moored houseboats, to ships that are permanently travelling and everything in between. And just like their skippers and crew, they come in all shapes and sizes with budgets large and small. Inside are homes based on historic ex-commercial cargo barges (both sailing and motor), narrowboats, tugs, sailing yachts, motor yachts, purpose-built houseboats, a floating log cabin and a look at floating homes of the future. With over 300 colour photographs of homes in the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands, the USA and Australia there is inspiration for anyone who has ever wondered what it would be like to live afloat.

Make Do and Mend by Anonim Pdf

The rationing period during World War II was a difficult time, and yet it is remembered nostalgically as a time of unity and great sacrifice. Make Do and Mend focuses on clothes rationing, which was introduced in June 1940. With the nation's industrial output concentrated on the war effort, basic clothes were in short supply and high fashion was an unknown commodity. Adults were issued as little as 36 coupons a year to spend on clothes. But a man's suit could cost 22 coupons, a coat 16 and a lady's dress 11, so the need to recycle clothing and be inventive with other materials became a necessity. The government issued the leaflets included in Make Do and Mend to advise on how best to avoid wasting valuable resources by recycling curtains into dresses and old sheets into underwear; in short how to 'make do and mend' rather than buying new clothes. Produced from original material held in archives the leaflets are also a nostalgic showcase of forties style.

Dark waters are rising. Who will stay afloat? Architect Vance Nolan has crafted a marvel—shining apartments floating in the peaceful cove of a winding river. The project is partially occupied and about to make investors rich when a sinkhole gives way. Torrential rains quickly flood the cove, leaving a handful of builders, investors, and residents cut off from the rest of the world. The motley group is bitterly divided over how to survive. Vance insists they wait for rescue. Developer Tony Dean wants to strike out into the darkness. And single-mom Danielle Clement, obligated to each man and desperate to protect her young son, Simeon, isn’t sure which one is wiser. Then Simeon spots something strange underwater—beautiful, shifting lights in the dark depths. In this watery world, everyone’s secrets will eventually come to light. And deliverance may mean more than just getting out alive. Benjamin Franklin Orville is a boy who wants for nothing. He has his own pony, and he's caught the eye of the charming girl next door. He doesn't have a care in the world--until the day his mother sends him to market to get a chicken for dinner. Suddenly Benjy is caught up in a scuffle, kidnapped with a group of immigrants, and forced to work aboard the Ella Dawn--one of the most ill-reputed oystering vessels in Baltimore. He tries to plead his case, but his captors are unimpressed by Benjamin's way with language. Soon the boy knows only hard work and hunger, a little bit of German, and a whole lot about injustice. It's more of an education than he ever got at home. And along with a growling stomach and aching muscles, he also experiences the joys of the sea--a gentle rhythm that rocks him to sleep at night and freedom he never felt between the fancy walls of his home. Will Benjamin ever see home again? And if he does, will he know what to do there?

The Curve Of Time by M. Wylie Blanchet Pdf

“Time did not exist; or if it did it did not mater. Our world then was both wide and narrow—wide in the immensity of the sea and mountain; narrow in that the boat was very small, and we lived and camped, explored and swam in a little realm of our own making...” This is the fascinating true adventure story of a woman who packed her five children onto a twenty-five-foot boat and explored the coastal waters of British Columbia summer after summer in the 1920s and 1930s. Acting single-handedly as skipper, navigator, engineer and of course, mother, Muriel Wylie Blanchet saw her crew through exciting—and sometimes perilous—encounters with fog; rough seas, cougars, bears and whales, and did so with high spirits and courage. On these pages an independent woman with a deep respect for the native cultures of a region, and a refreshing wonderment about the natural world, comes to life. In The Curve of Time, she has left us with a sensitive and lyrically written account of their journeys and a timeless travel memoir not to be missed.

Staying Afloat When the Water Gets Rough by David Posen Pdf

The news keeps getting worse: the economy, climate change, global conflict. Not a day goes by that we're not faced with another grim predication; another indication that the way we live our lives is undergoing a fundamental change. And while change can indeed be good, it can also be stressful and worrisome. In Staying Afloat When the Water Gets Rough, Dr. Posen asks, "What can be done to increase our comfort with the daily changes in our outside environment?" With compassion, understanding and humour, he explains the ingredients for "changehardiness," illustrating his message with stories from his own experience as well as from that of his patients and friends. Part psychology, part philosophy, part action plan, the book will make you think, it will make you laugh and it will definitely increase your comfort with the changes happening around you. "David Posen has done it again! His survival guide for changing times is down to earth, reassuring and fun to read." -Jack Canfield, co-author of Chicken Soup for the Soul
