Through the Eyes of a Belfast Child - Life. Personal Reflections. Poems by Greg McVicker Pdf

Life is a journey. Often times and without choice, our actions and interactions within the environments in which we grow, live, work, and play, define our worldviews and shape who we are. Anyone who has faced traumatic events may look for an outlet to share their experiences in the hopes they are not alone in their struggles. In hindsight, however, the realization is that we are all human, and each and every one of us has a unique story to tell.

The Ghosts of Belfast by Stuart Neville Pdf

A New York Times Notable Book and Winner of The Los Angeles Times Book Prize, Neville's debut remains "a flat-out terror trip" (James Ellroy) and "one of the best Irish novels, in any genre, of recent times" (John Connolly). Northern Ireland’s Troubles may be over, but peace has not erased the crimes of the past. Gerry Fegan, a former paramilitary contract killer, is haunted by the ghosts of the twelve people he slaughtered. Every night, at the point of losing his mind, he drowns their screams in drink. But it’s not enough. In order to appease the ghosts, Fegan is going to have to kill the men who gave him orders. From the greedy politicians to the corrupt security forces, the street thugs to the complacent bystanders who let it happen, all are called to account. But when Fegan’s vendetta threatens to derail a hard-won truce and destabilize the government, old comrades and enemies alike want him dead.

New and Selected Poems of Patrick Galvin by Patrick Galvin Pdf

Patrick Galvin, one of Ireland most distinctive and original poets, was born in Cork in 1927. Author of seven collections of poetry his work has appeared in numerous journals and anthologies and has been broadcast by the BBC and RTE. Galvin is master of the understatement combining black humour with intense compassion to create a poetry that is directly political and humane, expressed with conviction in an effortless style of great emotional depth. His first collection of poetry Heart of Grace was published in 1957 followed by the mould-breaking Christ in London. Other collections include The Wood-Burners, Man on the Porch and Folk Tales For the General, a Poetry Ireland Book Choice. His most recent works The Mad Women of Cork and The Death of Art O'Leary were published in 1994. Robin Skelton in a review for The Guardian states that Galvin is 'one of the few really original poets of our generation'. Galvin is also a well known playwright and was Resident Dramatist at the Lyric Theatre, Belfast from 1973 to 1979. His awards include a Leverhulme Fellowship in Drama and the prestigious Irish American Cultural Award for Poetry in 1995. This single volume supports the sentiments of many critics who believe his work is a significant contribution to poetry in Ireland.

The Little Book of Belfast by Raymond O'Regan,Arthur Magee Pdf

Did You Know? Belfast’s motto is Pro Tanto Quid Retribuamus: ‘What shall we give in return for so much?’ In 1170, the first Belfast Castle was established in what is now Castle Place. The present castle on Cavehill dates from 1870 and was gifted to the city in 1937. The Belfast News Letter was the first paper outside of America to publish the Declaration of Independence. The Little Book of Belfast is a compendium of obscure, strange and entertaining facts about the city’s fascinating past and present. Funny, fast-paced and fact-packed, here you will find out about Belfast’s trade and industry, crime and punishment, music, literature and sport, architectural heritage, and its famous (and occasionally infamous) men and women. It covers not only the major elements in Belfast’s history but also those unusual, little-known facts that could so easily have been forgotten. A reliable reference and a quirky guide, this book can be dipped into time and again to reveal something new about the people, heritage and secrets of this ancient city.

Inventing the Myth by Connal Parr Pdf

This book approaches Ulster Protestantism through its theatrical and cultural intersection with politics, re-establishing a forgotten history and engaging with contemporary debates. Anchored by the perspectives of ten writers - some of whom have been notably active in political life - it uniquely examines tensions going on within. Through its exploration of class division and drama from the early twentieth century to the present, the book restores the progressive and Labour credentials of the community's recent past along with its literary repercussions, both of which appear in recent decades to have diminished. Drawing on over sixty interviews, unpublished scripts, as well as rarely-consulted archival material, it shows - contrary to a good deal of cliched polemic and safe scholarly assessment - that Ulster Protestants have historically and continually demonstrated a vigorous creative pulse as well as a tendency towards Left wing and class politics. St. John Ervine, Thomas Carnduff, John Hewitt, Sam Thompson, Stewart Parker, Graham Reid, Ron Hutchinson, Marie Jones, Christina Reid, and Gary Mitchell profoundly challenge as well as reflect their communities. Illuminating a diverse and conflicted culture stretching beyond Orange Order parades, the weaving together of the lives and work of each of the writers highlights mutual themes and insights on their identity, as if part of some grander tapestry of alternative twentieth-century Protestant culture. Ulster Protestantism's consistent delivery of such dissenting voices counters its monolithic and reactionary reputation.

Visions of the Irish Dream by Marguerite Quintelli-Neary Pdf

Visions of the Irish Dream assembles essays that examine the elusive dream of the Irish and Irish Americans, looking at aspirations of 19th-century emigrants to Canada and the United States, political and educational goals of the Irish, historic trauma, contemporary xenophobia, and artists’ renditions of “Irishness.” Whether the dreams are fulfilled or deferred, they all strive to come to terms with what it means to be Irish; sometimes the definition involves bringing a piece of the old country with you, buying facsimiles of “genuine Irish goods,” or redefining self in a way that frees Ireland of the colonial model. This study explores the conflicted and shifting visions of the people who inhabit or have left an isolated island that has moved from a search for independence to integration into a European union. From discussion of the politics of translation in Ferguson and Mangan to the establishment of the National schools, the movement of the Celts from continental Europe as evidenced in Joyce to the translatlantic flight of the Irish to the Americas in a drama by Nicola McCartney, and the re-invention of the feminine force in the writings of novelists Jennifer Johnston and Roddy Doyle to the feminine voice expressed in the work of poet Eiléan NíChuilleanáin, the collection underscores the significance of the dream in Irish history and the arts.
