International Series in Heating and Ventilation, Volume 15: Automatic Controls for Heating and Air Conditioning: Principles and Applications details the relationship between theory and practice in implementing an automated system for thermal regulation. The title first deals with the sensors and methods for quantifying the two variables mainly of interest in building services systems, temperature and humidity. Next, the selection covers the application of controls to a number of specific areas of building environmental services. The text also discusses controller mechanisms and circuits, along with controller characteristics. The fifth chapter deals with basic theory of linear automatic control, while the sixth chapter talks about the analysis of non-linear systems. The book will be of great interest to engineers and technicians who deal with cooling and heating systems.

HVAC Instrumentation and Control by A. Bhatia Pdf

The HVAC systems are designed for peak conditions. Because these conditions prevail only for small period in a year, the HVAC equipment must operate most of the time at lean capacity. The function of the control system is to adjust the equipment capacity to match the load. Automatic controls are necessary not only to achieve the design conditions in the conditioned space but are also required for efficient operation of the HVAC system. The main parameters to be controlled in air conditioning system are temperature, pressure, humidity, air quality and thermal energy distribution. This 6 -hour quick book covers the basic control fundamentals of automatic controls in the HVAC system. Emphasis is placed on the control principles, terminology, basic components, control devices and direct digital control systems. Numerous illustrations and examples have been included to enhance the understanding of the course material. This course is aimed at the personnel who have some limited background in the air conditioning field or who may be having difficulty relating controls to air-conditioning equipment. The course is suitable for students, mechanical, electrical, controls and HVAC engineers, architects, building designers, contractors, estimators, energy auditors and facility managers. The book includes a multiple type quiz (30 questions) at the end.Learning ObjectiveAt the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to: * Define the basic blocks of control system;* Distinguish between open loop and closed loop systems;* Describe different types of temperature, humidity, pressure and flow sensors;* Define setpoint, control point, offset and throttling range;* Determine controller action for given the application;* Distinguish between direct and reverse reset;* Distinguish between the mixing and diverting valves;* Define flow coefficient, valve authority, controllability, rangeability and turndown ratio; * Describe the sizing of control valves;* Define proportional control, PI control and PID control;* Describe direct digital control terminology, hardware and control network;* Cite the energy saving benefits of DDC systems.

Control Systems for Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning by Roger W. Haines,Douglas C. Hittle Pdf

In the First Edition of this classic text, Roger Haines devised a simple building-block method which enabled students to quickly learn about the operating principles and applications of all the basic devices and subsystems used in HVAC control. The new Fifth Edition, completely revised by Douglas Hittle, takes into account the many technological changes that have arisen since then. Crystal-clear guidelines on combining control devices, circuits, computers, and HVAC equipment into efficient control systems that are accurate and energy-efficient are presented along with hundreds of charts and illustrations which provide data critical to the understanding and design of modern HVAC systems. These include: psychrometric charts and tables relating to optimal levels of temperature and humidity at specific altitudes: block/flow diagrams which show control component function; circuit diagrams of important electrical control system components; schematic diagrams showing the configuration of various control systems.

Control Systems for Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning by R. Haines Pdf

There are two reasons why we have a new edition every four or five years. The first is that technology changes. Chapter 10, on computer-based con trols, has had to be almost completely rewritten. Fundamentals don't change, but the tools available to us do change. Evaluation and proper use of those tools makes it even more imperative that we understand fundamentals. Many of our control problems stem from the use of new devices as a solution to problems that are, in fact, control design errors. New gadgets, for example, Direct Digital Controls (DDC), will not solve basic problems and may even compound them. None-the-Iess, you will find an extensive discussion of DDC because I think it is the probable "future" in HVAC control. But it must be applied with a good understanding of fundamentals. The second reason is that I keep learning and need to pass on my new and improved understanding to my readers. Thus you will find a number of small but important revisions, a dissertation on control "modes," and a much more detailed discussion of how electronic control devices work. There are a few places where I have corrected what I now perceive to be errors. I apologize for these. I have been much encouraged by the acceptance of this book in the past, and I hope that this new edition will be helpful. Thank you for your support.
