Back to the Drawing Board by Colin B. Carter,Jay William Lorsch Pdf

Business scandals from Enron to WorldCom have escalated concerns about corporate governance into a full-blown crisis. Institutional investors and legislators have dominated the debate and enacted important changes in corporate accounting and other areas. But Colin B. Carter and Jay W. Lorsch say that we must now focus on the performance of corporate boards. This timely book argues that boards are being pressed to perform unrealistic duties given their traditional structure, processes, and membership. Carter and Lorsch propose a strategic redesign of boards--making them better attuned to their oversight, decision-making, and advisory roles--to enable directors to meet 21st century challenges successfully. Based on the authors' deep expertise and longtime experience working with boards around the world, and on a probing survey of CEOs, Carter and Lorsch help boards to develop a realistic value proposition customized to the company they serve. The authors explore the core dilemmas and responsibilities boards face and outline a framework for designing the most effective structure, makeup, size, and culture. This book provides a candid account of the current state of boards and points the way in a time of crisis and change.

Back to the Drawing Board by Njoki Nathani Wane,Katerina Deliovsky,Erica Lawson Pdf

What are the fundamental tenets of African-Canadian feminism? What are the elements of feminist theory that have contributed to African-Canadian feminist thought? African-American feminists have influenced thinking and writing in Canada. As well, Black-Canadian feminists have published on a wide range of issues relating to Black women's lives, history and experience. Back to the Drawing Board builds on this existing literature and maps out a new space in which to articulate a stronger vision of African-Canadian feminism. While the essays focus on key concepts and debates that underlie Black feminist theory and challenge the dominant structures that continue to exclude Black women, the objective is to bring the plurality of African-Canadian women's voices and experiences into the centre of analysis. To accomplish this, the editors draw on different theories and insights. The fourteen contributors come from different race and gender backgrounds and are committed to creating an empowering space where Black women can speak to and about each other and find a home for their words. They write on the subjects of Black-Canadian feminist thought, African-Canadian feminist historiography Black feminist political activism, white mainstream feminism as a liberatory movement Black women in the white feminism and anti-racist education Native education and spirituality that form and shape identity, how the media and law construct Black identity, the social consequences of interracial relationships. Includes a Glossary, Bibliography and Index. Back to the Drawing Board initiates a dialogue critical for defining feminisms that validate the contributions and experiences of African-Canadian women.

Labour Questions in the Global South by Praveen Jha,Walter Chambati,Lyn Ossome Pdf

This book provides a focus on some of the main markers and challenges that are at the core of the study of structural transformations in contemporary capitalism and their implications for labour in the Global South. It examines the diverse perspectives and regional and social variations that characterise labour relations as a result of the uneven development which is an important facet of the intensification of capitalist accumulation.. The book provides important insights into the impact of the crises of capitalism on the wellbeing of labour at different historical junctures. Some of the issues covered by it include the conditions of work, and the changing composition of laboring classes and/or working people. The chapters also throw light on the multiple trajectories in the development of labour relations and employment in the Global South, especially after the ascendancy and domination of neoliberal finance capitalism. Some of the major aspects considered by the essays include the decentering of production and development of global value systems, crisis of social reproduction, and the rising informalisation of work.

Back to the Drawing Board by Jennifer Quick Pdf

The first book to consider the importance of commercial art and design for Ed Ruscha's work Ed Ruscha (b. 1937) emerged onto the Los Angeles art scene with paintings that incorporated consumer products, such as Spam and SunMaid raisins. In this revelatory book, Jennifer Quick looks at Ruscha's work through the tools, techniques, and habits of mind of commercial art and design, showing how his training and early work as a commercial artist helped him become an incisive commentator on the presence and role of design in the modern world. The book explores how Ruscha mobilized commercial design techniques of scale, paste-up layout, and perspective as he developed his singular artistic style. Beginning with his formative design education and focusing on the first decade of his career, Quick analyzes previously unseen works from the Ruscha archives alongside his celebrated paintings, prints, and books, demonstrating how Ruscha's engagement with commercial art has been foundational to his practice. Through this insightful lens, Quick affirms Ruscha as a powerful and witty observer of the vast network of imagery that permeates visual culture and offers new perspectives on Pop and conceptual art.
