Forest Ecosystem Classification for Nova Scotia by Kevin Stewart Keys,Peter D. Neily,Eugene Quigley,Nova Scotia. Department of Natural Resources,Nova Scotia. Renewable Resources Branch Pdf

This guide is part of the Nova Scotia forest ecosystem classification (FEC) system. It describes all currently recognized FEC Soil Types (STs) in the province along with related management interpretations. Although presented as a separate document, this guide is designed to be used in conjunction with provincial vegetation type and ecosite guides to support ecosystem based, stand-level forest management in Nova Scotia. Soil types were derived from 1,456 provincial FEC field plots sampled between 2000 and 2010. Data from an additional 102 non-FEC plots assessed by the Atlantic Canada Conservation Data Centre and NSDNR Wildlife Division were also used.--Document.

Soils as an Indicator of Forest Health by O'Neil Pdf

The Montreal Process was formed in 1994 to develop an internationally agreed upon set of criteria and indicators for the conservation and sustainable management of temperate and boreal forests. In response to this effort, the Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) and Forest Health Monitoring (FHM) programs of the USDA Forest Service have implemented a national soil monitoring program to address specific questions related to: (1) the current and future status of soil resources and (2) the contribution of forest soils to the global carbon cycle. As the first and only nationally consistent effort to monitor forest soil quality in the United States, this program provides critical baseline information on the current status of the soil resource and the potential effects of natural and human disturbance on forest health and productivity.
