Authentic Victorian Villas and Cottages by Isaac H. Hobbs Pdf
More than 100 magnificent home plans provide lovers of Victoriana the finest examples of period architecture. Compiled by Isaac Hobbs, a prominent Philadelphia architect of the period, the book also offers an informative discussion on the principles and practices of practical home design and construction. Designs and floor and ground plans for villas, cottages, and other residences are revealed in 122 detailed engravings, among them a six-room ornamental cottage (without bathroom facilities) for $1,500; an elegant Elizabethan villa, with entry hall, library, china closet, and five bedrooms, for $27,000; and an ornate Gothic suburban residence, complete with parlor, sitting room, dressing rooms, six bedrooms, and two bathrooms, at a cost of $33,000. Invaluable to architects, preservationists, and home restorers, this authentic guide to a wealth of house styles from the late 1800s will also delight anyone intrigued by Victorian life.
Excerpt from Cottage Residences: Or a Series of Designs for Rural Cottages and Cottage Villas, and Their Gardens and Grounds, Adapted to North America A hearty desire to contribute something to the improvement of the domestic architecture and the rural taste of our country, has been the motive which has influenced me in preparing this little volume. With us, almost every man either builds, or looks forward to building, a home for himself at some period of his life; it may be only a log hut, or at most a rustic cottage, but perhaps also, a villa, or a mansion. As yet, however, our houses are mostly either of the plainest and most meagre description, or, if of a more ambitious, they are frequently of a more objectionable character - shingle palaces of very questionable convenience, and not in the least adapted, by their domestic and rural beauty, to harmonize with our lovely natural landscapes. Now I am desirous that every one who lives in the country, and in a country house, should be in some degree conversant with domestic architecture, not only because it will be likely to improve the comfort of his own house, and hence all the houses in the country, but that it will enlarge his mind, and give him new sources of enjoyment. It is not my especial object at this moment to dwell upon the superior convenience which may be realized in our houses by a more familiar acquaintance with architecture. The advantages of an ingeniously arranged and nicely adapted plan, over one carelessly and ill-contrived, are so obvious to the reason of every one, that they are self-evident. Excerpt from Cottage Residences: Or a Series of Designs for Rural Cottages and Cottage Villas, and Their Gardens and Grounds, Adapted to North America Mr. Hatfield has contributed a pretty design for a river cottage (see page Messrs. Vaux and Withers were the designers of Judge Monell's cottage, illustrated on page 206, and Mr. Arthur Gilman has given us the plans and views of his own house recently erected on Staten Island. The rest of the designs were all made by the editor; and all will, he thinks, give a fair idea of the styles and plans for cottages that are acceptable at the present day.
