Finalist, 2023 Trillium Book Award Finalist, Writers Union of Canada 2023 Daunta Gleed Literary Award Finalist, 2023 ReLit Award for Short Fiction Twelve exquisitely written stories depicting the search for human connection and the attempt to fit in far from home. All the Shining People explores migration, diaspora, and belonging within Toronto’s Jewish South African community, as individuals come to terms with the oppressive hierarchies that separate, and the connections that bind. Seeking a place to belong, the book’s characters — including a life-drawing model searching the streets for her lover; a woman confronting secrets from her past in the new South Africa; and a man grappling with the legacy of his father, a former political prisoner — crave authentic relationships that replicate the lost feeling of home. With its focus on family, culture, and identity, All the Shining People captures the experiences of immigrants and outsiders with honesty, subtlety, and deep sympathy.

Trust No One by Michael Grothaus Pdf

Deepfake technology can create video evidence of just about anything: Hollywood superstar Margot Robbie in an orgy. Chinese president Xi Jinping declaring nuclear war. Basketball legend Michael Jordan winning the World Cup. The only limit is the imagination. In a time where fake news and disinformation is becoming harder and harder to identify, it is more essential than ever to understand the dark origins of deepfakes. Journalist Michael Grothaus goes down the rabbit hole as he interviews the often morally dubious, yet incredibly skilled creators of this content. It's a journey that opens a window into the communities transforming reality. Challenging, enlightening and terrifying, Trust No One asks the question other people are too scared to: what happens when you can no longer believe your own eyes? 'An alarming look at deepfakes' Sunday Times 'Michael Grothaus takes a hard look at the growth of deep fakes, examining cases that demonstrate the threats presented by morally dubious creators. From the personal to political, the impact of deep fakes is considered carefully by Grothaus, both on the victims and on society as a whole, creating an essential picture of a growing trend in disinformation' Eliot Higgins, founder of Bellingcat

Nolan Taylor must confront her life after basketball, and discover what it takes to endure the physical and emotional pain in rebuilding her self-awareness. Nolan Taylor is a thirteen-year veteran of the Canadian women's wheelchair basketball team. Her position as "Big Girl" on the team belies her fragility when her decision to retire and undergo a long overdue hip replacement throws her into a post-retirement identity crisis. Spurred on by pain and a numbing domesticity with longtime love, Quinn McLeod, she retreats into her memory, reliving her rookie year and emerging sexuality with her much older mentor, Darren Steward. As Nolan struggles to maintain her tenuous connections to the people around her in the midst of physical anguish, we are reminded that, despite our bodies' limitations, we have physical needs that we are driven to fulfill, and the adrenaline that pushes professional athletes can be harnessed to allow what may seem impossible.

The short account given in the following pages of three of the "Friends of God" of the fourteenth century, is but a small fragment of a history which would form in itself a voluminous library, the history of the "Brethren" of the Middle Ages, known to us under many names, but in England chiefly as the Lollards or Boni Homines. - Preface.

Vampire Hunter D Omnibus: Book One by Hideyuki Kikuchi Pdf

A new omnibus collecting the first three volumes of the Vampire Hunter D horror novel series! It is 12,090 A.D., thousands of years since the human race nearly destroyed itself in a nuclear war--a folly foreseen by those who waited to emerge out of the underground...not from shelters, but from crypts! The aristocratic vampire lords known as the Nobles inherited our world, and with dark science and immortal patience made real the things that mortals had merely dreamed, whether voyaging to the distant stars, or conjuring monsters to roam the Earth. Yet the grand civilization of the Nobles has grown decadent, and as the terrorized remnants of humanity at last found the strength to rebel, their undying lords have been pushed back to the Frontier--the violent borderlands where humans still remain the prey of vampires, who for all their knowledge and power have never lost their obsession with our living flesh, blood...and souls! In this bizarre and deadly far future the most dangerous thing of all is not a vampire, but the one who hunts them--the one who is half them--a dhampir, the unearthly beautiful wanderer known as D. The Vampire Hunter D Omnibus collects the first three novels in author Hideyuki Kikuchi's adventure horror series: Vampire Hunter D, Raiser of Gales, and Demon Deathchase. Illustrated by Final Fantasy artist Yoshitaka Amano, this book is only the beginning of a legend!

Everlasting by Nancy Thayer Pdf

From New York Times bestselling author Nancy Thayer comes a dazzling portrait of a young woman whose passion and ambition drive her to a fateful choice. Catherine Eliot was born to a world of privilege and prestige, with a family whose last name and vast fortune provide her with access to almost anything she could wish for. But what Catherine craves most is independence. So while her friends settle into comfortable lives financed by doting parents and indulgent husbands, she moves to New York City, determined to make it on her own. Taking a demanding job in a bustling flower shop, she works hard and learns the trade until, with courage and determination, she’s able to open Blooms, an exclusive floral boutique on the fashionable Upper East Side. Jetting from Manhattan’s flower district to elegant East Hampton, from England’s gorgeous countryside to Holland’s world-famous flower auctions, Catherine is at the height of her career. But before she can bask in her hard-won success, her brother’s desperate actions endanger her business. Meanwhile, while romanced by a charming Boston lawyer who whisks her off to Paris, Catherine also finds herself powerfully drawn to a secretive foreigner who takes her breath away. The question remains whether Catherine can confront her own demons to achieve the life she’s long desired. Includes a captivating excerpt of Nancy Thayer’s novel Nantucket Sisters! Box of Frogs by Iain Hollis Pdf

In 2015, Iain Hollis embarked on a 4,000 mile solo cycling adventure around Europe. Medically retired with a broken ankle, after spending 23 years in the police, the 46-year-old former Royal Marine Commando spent 95 days on the road. Towing a trailer loaded with kit, his travels took him from France, over the Austrian Alps and right down to the Black Sea in Bulgaria. Camping each night in any available cover and cooking on a portable stove, he witnessed all kinds of things. The return route through Ukraine, Poland and Estonia culminated with a ferry crossing to Sweden before he flew home after an epic journey spanning 26 countries. The ride was a kind of self-help therapy to a troubled individual. Rejected by his mum after his parents’ divorce and cruelly abused by his stepmother, Iain was placed in a children’s home at the age of 7. From a long-term foster home, he joined the Marines at 16 and recalls his experiences in the desert, jungle and Arctic. He even shared a landing craft with Prince Philip and got a part as a movie extra, playing a German in Indiana Jones. At 21, he joined the police, got married and had kids, but his traumatic childhood caused a near breakdown and his career took a bumpy ride with a suspension from duty and a daunting court trial. Subsequently getting his new life seemingly on track, Iain took up marathon running and won the 2000 London fancy dress. He went on to compete on three more occasions but this new hobby was cut short following his ankle break in 2003. Unable to run, his journeys to work by boat soon earned him fame as the ‘canoeing cop’. With a gradual deterioration in the ankle and after failed surgery, he came close to self-amputation. Box of Frogs: Memoirs of a Canoeing Cyclist is a fascinating autobiography that will take you on Iain’s globe-trotting rollercoaster ride of life so far. It will appeal to those who enjoy true stories and tales of overcoming adversity and strife.
