Beowulf (Translated with Annotations by John Lesslie Hall and an Introduction by Kemp Malone) by Anonymous Pdf

Literary scholar, professor, and poet J. Lesslie Hall is best known for his 1897 translation of the Old English epic poem "Beowulf." The story focuses on the titular character of Beowulf, a Scandinavian hero who comes to the aid of the Danes to save their land from a human-demon monster named Grendel. After defeating Grendel, Beowulf must then kill Grendel's mother. He returns to Scandinavia with more fame and accord and eventually becomes king. Then fifty years later, a dragon attacks his kingdom, and the hero must fight once again to defend his title and his honor. What makes "Beowulf" a lasting classic is its depiction of Norse traditions and culture. The people have strong connections inherent within a kinship society; if someone was killed it was the family's duty to exact justice or receive payment for the death. "Beowulf" also shows an interesting dichotomy between the Norse pagan religion of when the story is set versus the monotheistic Christian storytellers who likely first related the tale during the Middle Ages. Many scholars debate the epic poem's true stance on religion, but the tale gives an accurate depiction of how paganism deteriorated as monotheism flourished. A classic of Anglo-Saxon literature, "Beowulf" remains one of the greatest epic poems ever written. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper, includes an introduction by Kemp Malone, and a preface and annotations by the translator, J. Lesslie Hall.

Beowulf: complete bilingual edition including the original anglo-saxon edition + 3 modern english translations + an extensive study of the poem + footnotes, index and alphabetical glossary by Anonymous,Raymond Wilson Chambers Pdf

This carefully crafted ebook: “Beowulf: complete bilingual edition including the original anglo-saxon edition + 3 modern english translations + an extensive study of the poem + footnotes, index and alphabetical glossary” contains 5 books in one volume and is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Beowulf is the conventional title of an Old English heroic epic poem consisting of 3182 alliterative long lines, set in Scandinavia, commonly cited as one of the most important works of Anglo-Saxon literature. It survives in a single manuscript known as the Nowell Codex. Its composition by an anonymous Anglo-Saxon poet is dated between the 8th and the early 11th century. In 1731, the manuscript was badly damaged by a fire that swept through a building housing a collection of Medieval manuscripts assembled by Sir Robert Bruce Cotton. The poem's existence for its first seven centuries or so made no impression on writers and scholars, and besides a brief mention in a 1705 catalogue by Humfrey Wanley it was not studied until the end of the eighteenth century, and not published in its entirety until the 1815 edition prepared by the Icelandic-Danish scholar Grímur Jónsson Thorkelin. In the poem, Beowulf, a hero of the Geats in Scandinavia, comes to the help of Hroðgar, the king of the Danes, whose mead hall (in Heorot) has been under attack by a monster known as Grendel. After Beowulf slays him, Grendel's mother attacks the hall and is then also defeated. Victorious, Beowulf goes home to Geatland in Sweden and later becomes king of the Geats. After a period of fifty years has passed, Beowulf defeats a dragon, but is fatally wounded in the battle. After his death, his attendants bury him in a tumulus, a burial mound, in Geatland. The numerous different translations and interpretations of Beowulf turn this monumental work into a challenge for the reader. This ebook contains 5 books in one ebook: 1) By Anonymous, edited by Alfred John Wyatt: "Beowulf". This is the anglo-saxon original version based on the autotypes (facsimilies) in Julius Zupitza’s edition of 1882. 2) By John Lesslie Hall: "Beowulf - An Anglo-Saxon Epic Poem". This is a 1892 translation of Beowulf into modern english with notes and comments. 3) By William Morris: "The Tale of Beowulf - Sometime King of the Folk of the Weder Geats". This is an 1895 translation of Beowulf into modern english with notes and comments. 4) By: Francis Barton Gummere: "Beowulf". This is a 1910 translation of Beowulf into modern english , with notes and comments. 5) By: Raymond Wilson Chambers: "Beowulf - An Introduction to the Study of the Poem with a Discussion of the Stories of Offa and Finn".

Beowulf - An Anglo-Saxon Epic Poem (Annotated): Translated from the Heyne-Socin Text by Anonim Pdf

It is the devout desire of this translator to hasten the day when the story of Beowulf shall be as familiar to English-speaking peoples as that of the Iliad. Beowulf is our first great epic. It is an epitomized history of the life of the Teutonic races. It brings vividly before us our forefathers of pre-Alfredian eras, in their love of war, of sea, and of adventure. My special thanks are due to Professors Francis A. March and James A. Harrison, for advice, sympathy, and assistance. J.L. HALL.

Beowulf (Annotated) by J Lesslie Hall Pdf

Annotations This book is unique because it contains a literary criticism that was made by Jannette TorresDuring the 8th century the Scandinavians occupied British territory and remained there for the next 200 years. Throughout this century the entire territory had been converted to Christianity. It is believed that the poem was written by an English author when there was still a good relationship between Scandinavians and Englishmen, for the type of events he narrates, as well as for exalting the heroic past of the Germanic race.Beowulf is a heroic epic poem. It is considered the masterpiece representative of the ancient period of English literature. It is a story of inspired fiction and based on an authentic geographical, political, historical and social context. Its author is anonymous, but it is presumed that it was written in England, between the seventh or eighth centuries AD.At the end of the third century the dominion of the Roman civilization in Britania concludes. In the middle of the fifth century the Angles, Saxons and Jutes emigrated from northern Germany and the Jutland peninsula to occupy British territory. Later Britania was formed in 4 nations: The English, British (Welsh), The Picts and the Scots. The period in which Beowulf was written is known as Old English or Old English, having as its starting date the year 449 d. C., precisely the year of the Germanic invasions. The date of the year is 1066 d. C, when the Middle English or middle English period begins (Anglo-Saxon period).Latin predominated as a lingua franca in all written texts and artistic manifestations. The manuscripts or poems in old English are scarce and unique. Beowulf was apparently made known orally through songs. It was transcribed into the Western Saxon dialect at the end of the tenth century. The title of Beowulf was given to it in 1805 and it was first printed in 1815. It is the only surviving manuscript of a fire that occurred in 1731 in the Library of Sir Robin Colton . Currently remains sheltered in the British Library of London.

Beowulf by Anonymous Pdf

Beowulf, the Old English epic poem published anonymously centuries ago, remains one of the most influential pieces of English literature. Beowulf, a hero of the Geats, comes to the rescue of Hrothgar, the king of the Danes, who has come under attack by Grendel, a horrifying monster. After Beowulf slays him, Grendel's mother attacks the Dane and is then also defeated. Victorious, Beowulf returns to Geatland (Götaland in modern Sweden) and is declared their king. Fifty years later, Beowulf rises to battle again, this time to defeat a dragon, but is mortally wounded in the battle. After his death, his attendants cremate his body and erect a tower on a headland in his memory. Originally written in Old English, this edition is based on the 1892 verse translation by J. Lesslie Hall.

Beowulf by Lesslie Hall,Francis Gummere Pdf

Beowulf is a legendary story of heroes, monsters and treasures. In it are merely the details of epic events of great people of a heroic past. The events and people that stirred the hearts of our forefathers are chronicled in every chapter. The beauty of the language is what brings these events and people to life. However language is a slippery thing, which makes older works like Beowulf a challenge to translate. Therefore we present two translations of Beowulf, one from Francis Gummere and one from Lesslie Hall. Each one has its own strengths, which we hope will be a joy for you to discover. As no translation can ever be perfect, it is hoped the reader can appreciate Beowulf from these two different perspectives. Amazingly you will see that different translations can make the story come alive in different ways. A glossary, notes and index are included.
