Bernoulli Free-Boundary Problems by Eugene Shargorodsky,John F. Toland Pdf

Establishes an equivalence between Bernoulli free boundary problems and a class of equations for real-valued functions of one real variable. The equivalent equations can be written as nonlinear Riemann-Hilbert problems and the theory of complex Hardy spaces in the unit disc has a central role. A canonical Morse index can be assigned to free boundaries and the Calculus of Variations becomes available as a tool for the study.

Variational Problems with Concentration by Martin F. Bach Pdf

This self-contained research monograph focuses on semilinear Dirichlet problems and similar equations involving the p-Laplacian. The author explains new techniques in detail, and derives several numerical methods approximating the concentration point and the free boundary. The corresponding plots are highlights of this book.

Free Boundary Problems by Ioannis Athanasopoulos Pdf

Free boundary problems arise in an enormous number of situations in nature and technology. They hold a strategic position in pure and applied sciences and thus have been the focus of considerable research over the last three decades. Free Boundary Problems: Theory and Applications presents the work and results of experts at the forefront of current research in mathematics, material sciences, chemical engineering, biology, and physics. It contains the plenary lectures and contributed papers of the 1997 International Interdisciplinary Congress proceedings held in Crete. The main topics addressed include free boundary problems in fluid and solid mechanics, combustion, the theory of filtration, and glaciology. Contributors also discuss material science modeling, recent mathematical developments, and numerical analysis advances within their presentations of more specific topics, such as singularities of interfaces, cusp cavitation and fracture, capillary fluid dynamics of film coating, dynamics of surface growth, phase transition kinetics, and phase field models. With the implications of free boundary problems so far reaching, it becomes important for researchers from all of these fields to stay abreast of new developments. Free Boundary Problems: Theory and Applications provides the opportunity to do just that, presenting recent advances from more than 50 researchers at the frontiers of science, mathematics, and technology.

Regularity of the One-phase Free Boundaries by Bozhidar Velichkov Pdf

This open access book is an introduction to the regularity theory for free boundary problems. The focus is on the one-phase Bernoulli problem, which is of particular interest as it deeply influenced the development of the modern free boundary regularity theory and is still an object of intensive research. The exposition is organized around four main theorems, which are dedicated to the one-phase functional in its simplest form. Many of the methods and the techniques presented here are very recent and were developed in the context of different free boundary problems. We also give the detailed proofs of several classical results, which are based on some universal ideas and are recurrent in the free boundary, PDE and the geometric regularity theories. This book is aimed at graduate students and researches and is accessible to anyone with a moderate level of knowledge of elliptical PDEs.

Geometric Measure Theory and Free Boundary Problems by Guido De Philippis,Xavier Ros-Oton,Georg S. Weiss Pdf

This volume covers contemporary aspects of geometric measure theory with a focus on applications to partial differential equations, free boundary problems and water waves. It is based on lectures given at the 2019 CIME summer school “Geometric Measure Theory and Applications – From Geometric Analysis to Free Boundary Problems” which took place in Cetraro, Italy, under the scientific direction of Matteo Focardi and Emanuele Spadaro. Providing a description of the structure of measures satisfying certain differential constraints, and covering regularity theory for Bernoulli type free boundary problems and water waves as well as regularity theory for the obstacle problems and the developments leading to applications to the Stefan problem, this volume will be of interest to students and researchers in mathematical analysis and its applications.

Variational and Free Boundary Problems by Avner Friedman,Joel Spruck Pdf

This IMA Volume in Mathematics and its Applications VARIATIONAL AND FREE BOUNDARY PROBLEMS is based on the proceedings of a workshop which was an integral part of the 1990- 91 IMA program on "Phase Transitions and Free Boundaries. " The aim of the workshop was to highlight new methods, directions and problems in variational and free boundary theory, with a concentration on novel applications of variational methods to applied problems. We thank R. Fosdick, M. E. Gurtin, W. -M. Ni and L. A. Peletier for organizing the year-long program and, especially, J. Sprock for co-organizing the meeting and co-editing these proceedings. We also take this opportunity to thank the National Science Foundation whose financial support made the workshop possible. Avner Friedman Willard Miller, Jr. PREFACE In a free boundary one seeks to find a solution u to a partial differential equation in a domain, a part r of its boundary of which is unknown. Thus both u and r must be determined. In addition to the standard boundary conditions on the un known domain, an additional condition must be prescribed on the free boundary. A classical example is the Stefan problem of melting of ice; here the temperature sat isfies the heat equation in the water region, and yet this region itself (or rather the ice-water interface) is unknown and must be determined together with the tempera ture within the water. Some free boundary problems lend themselves to variational formulation.

Shape Optimization and Free Boundaries by Michel C. Delfour Pdf

Shape optimization deals with problems where the design or control variable is no longer a vector of parameters or functions but the shape of a geometric domain. They include engineering applications to shape and structural optimization, but also original applications to image segmentation, control theory, stabilization of membranes and plates by boundary variations, etc. Free and moving boundary problems arise in an impressingly wide range of new and challenging applications to change of phase. The class of problems which are amenable to this approach can arise from such diverse disciplines as combustion, biological growth, reactive geological flows in porous media, solidification, fluid dynamics, electrochemical machining, etc. The objective and orginality of this NATO-ASI was to bring together theories and examples from shape optimization, free and moving boundary problems, and materials with microstructure which are fundamental to static and dynamic domain and boundary problems.

Free Boundary Problems in Fluid Flow with Applications by J M Chadam,Helen Rasmussen Pdf

This is the third of three volumes containing the proceedings of the International Colloquium 'Free Boundary problems: Theory and Applications', held in Montreal from June 13 to June 22, 1990. The main part of this volume studies the flow of fluids, an area which has led to many of the classical free boundary problems. The first two sections contain the papers on various problems in fluid mechanics. The types of problems vary fromthe collision of two jets to the growth of a sand wave. In the next two sections porous flow is considered. This has important practical applications in fields such as petroleum engineering and groundwater pollution. Some new and interesting free boundary problems in geology and engineering are treated in the final section.
