Best Management Practices for Environmental Issues Related to Highway and Street Maintenance by William Albert Hyman,Donald Vary Pdf

This synthesis report will be of interest to state, local, and federal agency environmental and maintenance administrators, directors, supervisors, engineers, and scientists. It describes current best management practices (BMPs) for environmental issues related to road and street maintenance. The synthesis documents relevant background and recent information with regard to management practices that can help protect, preserve, or enhance the environment while at the same time allow road maintenance organizations to carry out their fundamental mission of maintenance and repair in a cost-effective manner. Information for the synthesis was collected by surveying U.S. and Canadian state and local transportation agencies and by conducting a literature search using domestic sources. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes BMPs consisting of broad management approaches applicable to the entire maintenance program or to more than one program area. In addition, BMPs for specific maintenance activities or groups of maintenance activities are included. Finally, BMPs concerning specific environmental issues are discussed.

Environmental Best Practices for Highway Maintenance Activities by British Columbia. Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure,Leonard E. Sielecki,Allen D. Planiden Pdf

"The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MoT), contracts the maintenance of British Columbia's provincial highways to privatized Road and Bridge Maintenance Contractors. These contractors play an essential role in meeting the Ministry's mandate to provide safe transportation, and to carry out all work in an environmentally responsible manner. To assist in this latter objective, the Ministry has developed this manual of Environmental Best Management Practices for Highway Maintenance Activities. These standardized practices and protocols are designed to be applicable across the province, and to serve as a practical and cost effective means for contractors to meet regulatory agency requirements, and public expectations for environmental protection. The document is an integral component of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and the Ministry of Environment regarding operational environmental stewardship for highway maintenance (see Section 8 for further information)."--Document.

Low-Volume Roads Engineering - Best Management Practices Field Guide by Gordon Keller,James Sherar,Forest Service Usda Pdf

This Low-Volume Roads Engineering Best Management Practices Field Guide is intended to provide an overview of the key planning, location, design, construction, and maintenance aspects of roads that can cause adverse environmental impacts and to list key ways to prevent those impacts. Best Management Practices are general techniques or design practices that, when applied and adapted to fit site-specific conditions, will prevent or reduce pollution and maintain water quality. BMPs for roads have been developed by many agencies since roads often have a major adverse impact on water quality, and most of those impacts are preventable with good engineering and management practices. Roads that are not well planned or located, not properly designed or constructed, not well maintained, or not made with durable materials often have negative effects on water quality and the environment.

Assessing and Managing the Ecological Impacts of Paved Roads by National Research Council,Transportation Research Board,Division on Earth and Life Studies,Board on Environmental Studies and Toxicology,Committee on Ecological Impacts of Road Density Pdf

All phases of road developmentâ€"from construction and use by vehicles to maintenanceâ€"affect physical and chemical soil conditions, water flow, and air and water quality, as well as plants and animals. Roads and traffic can alter wildlife habitat, cause vehicle-related mortality, impede animal migration, and disperse nonnative pest species of plants and animals. Integrating environmental considerations into all phases of transportation is an important, evolving process. The increasing awareness of environmental issues has made road development more complex and controversial. Over the past two decades, the Federal Highway Administration and state transportation agencies have increasingly recognized the importance of the effects of transportation on the natural environment. This report provides guidance on ways to reconcile the different goals of road development and environmental conservation. It identifies the ecological effects of roads that can be evaluated in the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of roads and offers several recommendations to help better understand and manage ecological impacts of paved roads.
