Best Stories to Tell to Children (Classic Reprint) by Sara Cone Bryant Pdf

Excerpt from Best Stories to Tell to Children It is the belief of the publishers, here and in England, that some of the stories ought to be printed separately from these books on method, for the more ready ac cess of children themselves and those whose interest is of a wholly untechnical sort. This is the more de sirable because stories which are especially adapted to be told are equally charming for reading aloud or to one's self. The converse is not true: stories written to be read are rarely suitable for the story-teller's art until they have been skilfully adapted. In other words, those tales which can be and have been told with suc cess are in a sense the chosen few; they, of all the world's stories, are most charming to hear or to read. How to Tell Stories to Children (Classic Reprint) by Sara Cone Bryant Pdf

Excerpt from How to Tell Stories to Children The stories which are given in the following pages are for the most part those which I have found to be best liked by the children to whom I have told these and others. I have tried to reproduce the form in which I actually tell them, - although that inevitably varies with every repetition, - _feeling that it would be of greater value to another story-teller than a more closely literary form. Stories to Tell the Littlest Ones (Classic Reprint) by Sara Cone Bryant Pdf

Excerpt from Stories to Tell the Littlest Ones Gradually other loves have taken their place in the home-story world, and I have told my boy and girl many tales of many kinds, true, fairy, and foolish, as they call humorous stories, but they still love the one that begins with Peter Rabbit. Once in a while, in the long series Of days, some happy inspiration has given me a better thought than usual, and a real story has popped out of my mouth in place of the mediocre inventions of habit. These few real stories have been retold by request of the original audience, and told again to larger audiences many times. It has seemed to me that the best of them might prove of value to other teach ers and mothers of very, little children, for the demand is continuous, and the sup ply of material suitable for such tiny hearers is exceedingly small. For the Story Teller by Carolyn Sherwin Bailey Pdf

Excerpt from For the Story Teller: Story Telling and Stories to Tell Story telling to be a developing factor in a child's life must be studied by the story teller. There are good stories and there are poor stories for children. The story that fits a child's needs to-day may not prove a Wise choice for him to-morrow. Some stories teach, some stories only give joy, some stories inspire, some stories just make a child laugh. Each of these story phases is important. To discover these Special types of stories, to fit stories to the individual child or child group, and to make over stories for perfect telling has been my aim in writing this book. Children's Stories by J. Berg Esenwein Pdf

Excerpt from Children's Stories: And How to Tell Them We cannot wonder at the skeptical smile which in certain quarters is sure to greet each new "How" to book as it issues from the press, for too many such books have seemed arrogant, and too many readers have assumed, to their eventual disappointment, that it is within the power of some omniscient author to disclose an infallible recipe for the successful practice of a given art. Of course no such thing is possible. There are no secrets that a painter, a writer or a story-teller can divulge but that may be, and in fact often have been, discovered at first hand by those who have added to their native gifts the devotion of intelligent practice. What is more, there are no fixed rules in art - in literary art especially - by which the would-be artist must be governed as he proceeds. What service, then, can the authors of a book of this kind hope to give to those who take it up expecting help? They can, after either personal experience or a wide and temperate study of the methods of others (or, better still, after both kinds of preparation), make a clear statement of the various methods used successfully by story-tellers - since that is the scope of this treatise. Famous Stories Every Child Should Know by Hamilton Wright Mabie Pdf

Excerpt from Famous Stories Every Child Should Know: A Selection of the Best Stories of All Times for Young People The prophecies of those fruitful years of research did not tell half the story of the wonderful things that were to be; the uses of electricity which are within easy reach for the most homely and practical purposes are as mysterious and magical as the dreams of the magicians. We are served by invisible ministers who are more powerful than the genii and more nimble than Puck. There has been a girdle around the world for many years; but there is good reason to believe that the time will come when news will go round the globe on waves of air. If we were not accustomed to ordering breakfast miles away from the grocer and the poulterer, we should be overcome with amazement every time we took up the telephone transmitter. Absolutely pure tones are now being made by the use of dynamos and will soon be sent into homes lying miles distant from the power house, so to speak, so that very sweet music is bein g played by are lights. The anticipations of scientific men, so far as the uses of force are concerned, have been surpassed by the wonder ful discoveries and applications of the past few years; but poetry and romance are not dead; on the contrary, they are more alive in the sense of awakening a wider interest than ever before in the history of writing. During the years which have been more fruitful in works of mechanical genius or dynamic energy, novels have been more widely distributed and more eagerly read than at any previousperiod. The poetry of the time, in the degree in which it has been fresh and vital, has been treated by newspapers as matter of universal interest. Men are born story-readers; if their interest subsides for the moment, or is absorbed by other forms of expression, it reasserts itself in due time and demands the old enchant ment that has woven its spell over every generation since men and women reached an early stage of development. Barbarians and even savages share with the most highly civilised peoples this passion for fiction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Was the Cat in the Hat Black? by Philip Nel Pdf

Racism is resilient, duplicitous, and endlessly adaptable, so it is no surprise that America is again in a period of civil rights activism. A significant reason racism endures is because it is structural: it's embedded in culture and in institutions. One of the places that racism hides-and thus perhaps the best place to oppose it-is books for young people. Was the Cat in the Hat Black? presents five serious critiques of the history and current state of children's literature tempestuous relationship with both implicit and explicit forms of racism. The book fearlessly examines topics both vivid-such as The Cat in the Hat's roots in blackface minstrelsy-and more opaque, like how the children's book industry can perpetuate structural racism via whitewashed covers even while making efforts to increase diversity. Rooted in research yet written with a lively, crackling touch, Nel delves into years of literary criticism and recent sociological data in order to show a better way forward. Though much of what is proposed here could be endlessly argued, the knowledge that what we learn in childhood imparts both subtle and explicit lessons about whose lives matter is not debatable. The text concludes with a short and stark proposal of actions everyone-reader, author, publisher, scholar, citizen- can take to fight the biases and prejudices that infect children's literature. While Was the Cat in the Hat Black? does not assume it has all the answers to such a deeply systemic problem, its audacity should stimulate discussion and activism.

Graded List of Stories for Reading Aloud (Classic Reprint) by Harriot E. Hassler Pdf

Excerpt from Graded List of Stories for Reading Aloud The making of the above list is no attempt to compile a graded list of the world's best stories. It does not attempt to include every book which may be read aloud with pleasure and profit in the class rooms. It aims rather to give a list of some twenty or thirty books which will be found enjoyable to both teachers and pupils, and will leave the children with some idea of the best juvenile literature, and to give them stories which will leave behind in their minds a kind of fine and wholesome feeling for the whole day. The Children's Book by Horace Elisha Scudder Pdf

Excerpt from The Children's Book: A Collection of the Best and Most Famous Stories and Poems in the English Language The Hare laid himself down midway and took a nap; "for," says he, "I can catch up with the Tortoise when I please." But it seems he overslept himself, for when he came to wake, though he scudded away as fast as possible, the Tortoise had got to the post before him and won the wager. Slow and steady wins the race. The Cat And The Mice. In a certain house there were many Mice. Now a Cat, hearing of this, went there and began to catch them and eat them up one by one. When the Mice were having this sorry time, they said among themselves: "Let us take time by the forelock and make our way to the eaves, that we may not be every one of us destroyed, for since the Cat cannot get there we shall be saved." Now when the Cat could not get at the Mice, he thought something must be done, and began to plan to get them out by some trick. Climbing up to a peg, and throwing himself off, he hung from it and pretended to be dead. One of the Mice peeping out saw him there and said: "Ah, you fellow, if you were a bag of meal itself we wouldn't come out to you." The fable teaches that prudent men, when they have found out rascals, are not to be caught by their make-believe. The Farmer And His Sons. A Farmer who had come to the end of his life wished his sons to make a trial of farming, and calling them to him, said: "Children, I am now finishing my life, but you will find all that belongs to me in the vineyard." So they, thinking it must contain a treasure-pot, took spades and plows, after the death of their father, and eagerly dug up all the soil. The treasure-pot, to be sure, they did not find, but the vineyard, being well dug over and improved, yielded an abundant store of grapes and made them rich. The story teaches that hard work is man's treasure-pot. The Woman And Her Maids. A Widow, who was a notable housekeeper, was wont to wake her Maids and set them at work by cock-crow. And they, taking this very hard, thought it was only necessary to strangle the house cock, for they thought he was the cause of their ills, because he waked the mistress before dawn. When they had done this the lady of the house waked them earlier still, in the very middle of the night, for she could not tell when it was cock-crow. So it is that their own devices become the very breeders of evil to many men. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
