Beyond Carnival by James N. Green Pdf

For many foreign observers, Brazil still conjures up a collage of exotic images, ranging from the camp antics of Carmen Miranda to the bronzed girl (or boy) from Ipanema moving sensually over the white sands of Rio's beaches. Among these tropical fantasies is that of the uninhibited and licentious Brazilian homosexual, who expresses uncontrolled sexuality during wild Carnival festivities and is welcomed by a society that accepts fluid sexual identity. However, in Beyond Carnival, the first sweeping cultural history of male homosexuality in Brazil, James Green shatters these exotic myths and replaces them with a complex picture of the social obstacles that confront Brazilian homosexuals. Ranging from the late nineteenth century to the rise of a politicized gay and lesbian rights movement in the 1970s, Green's study focuses on male homosexual subcultures in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. He uncovers the stories of men coping with arrests and street violence, dealing with family restrictions, and resisting both a hostile medical profession and moralizing influences of the Church. Green also describes how these men have created vibrant subcultures with alternative support networks for maintaining romantic and sexual relationships and for surviving in an intolerant social environment. He then goes on to trace how urban parks, plazas, cinemas, and beaches are appropriated for same-sex erotic encounters, bringing us into the world of street cruising, male hustlers, and cross-dressing prostitutes. Through his creative use of police and medical records, newspapers, literature, newsletters, and extensive interviews, Green has woven a fascinating history, the first of its kind for Latin America, that will set the standard for future works. "Green brushes aside outworn cultural assumptions about Brazil's queer life to display its full glory, as well as the troubles which homophobia has sent its way. . . . This latest gem in Chicago's 'World of Desire' series offers a shimmering view of queer Brazilian life throughout the 20th century."—Kirkus Reviews Winner of the 2000 Lambda Literary Awards' Emerging Scholar Award of the Monette/Horwitz Trust Winner of the 1999 Hubert Herring Award, Pacific Coast Council on Latin American Studies

After the Dance by Edwidge Danticat Pdf

In After the Dance, one of Haiti’s most renowned daughters returns to her homeland, taking readers on a stunning, exquisitely rendered journey beyond the hedonistic surface of Carnival and into its deep heart. Edwidge Danticat had long been scared off from Carnival by a loved one, who spun tales of people dislocating hips from gyrating with too much abandon, losing their voices from singing too loudly, going deaf from the clamor of immense speakers, and being punched, stabbed, pummeled, or fondled by other lustful revelers. Now an adult, she resolves to return and exorcise her Carnival demons. She spends the week before Carnival in the area around Jacmel, exploring the rolling hills and lush forests and meeting the people who live and die in them. During her journeys she traces the heroic and tragic history of the island, from French colonists and Haitian revolutionaries to American invaders and home-grown dictators. Danticat also introduces us to many of the performers, artists, and organizers who re-create the myths and legends that bring the Carnival festivities to life. When Carnival arrives, we watch as she goes from observer to participant and finally loses herself in the overwhelming embrace of the crowd. Part travelogue, part memoir, this is a lyrical narrative of a writer rediscovering her country along with a part of herself. It’s also a wonderful introduction to Haiti’s southern coast and to the true beauty of Carnival.

Carnival by Rawi Hage Pdf

Winner of the Quebec Writers' Federation Hugh MacLennan Prize for Fiction and shortlisted for the Rogers Writers' Trust Fiction Prize In the Carnival city there are two types of taxi drivers -- the spiders and the flies. The spiders patiently sit in their cars and wait for the calls to come. But the flies are wanderers - they roam the streets, looking for the raised hands of passengers among life's perpetual flux. Fly is a wanderer and a knower. Raised in the circus, the son of a golden-haired trapeze artist and a flying carpet pilot from the East, he is destined to drift and observe. From his taxi we see the world in all its carnivalesque beauty and ugliness. We meet criminals, prostitutes, madmen, magicians, and clowns of many kinds. We meet ordinary people going to extraordinary places, and revolutionaries trying to live ordinary lives. Hunger and injustice claw at the city, and books provide the only true shelter. And when the Carnival starts, all limits dissolve, and a gunshot goes off... With all of the beauty, truth, rage, and peripatetic storytelling that have made Cockroach and De Niro's Game international publishing sensations, Carnival gives us Rawi Hage at his searing best. Alternately laughing at absurdity and crying out at oppression, by turns outrageous, hilarious, sorrowful, and stirring, Carnival is a tour de force that will make all of life's passengers squirm in their comfortable, complacent backseats.

Don't Stop the Carnival by Herman Wouk Pdf

The basis for the Herman Wouk–Jimmy Buffett musical: A middle-aged New Yorker buys a Caribbean hotel and learns that paradise has its drawbacks in this novel that “moves as fast as a Marx Brothers movie” (The New York Times Book Review). Broadway press agent Norman Paperman is pushing fifty with one heart attack already under his belt. So he decides to chuck the stressful Manhattan life and bring his wife and teenage daughter to a lush green island. With the help of a wheeler-dealer friend, he winds up buying a small hotel. How hard could running one be? Pretty hard, actually, when you throw in an earthquake, plumbing problems, rampaging ants, and a few more unexpected developments at the Gull Reef Club. Before long, Norman’s spirit is as drained as his bank account, his marriage is on the brink, and he’s desperately searching for a way out of this beautiful nightmare . . . Don’t Stop the Carnival is a clever comic departure for the Pulitzer Prize–winning, #1 New York Times–bestselling author of such classics as Marjorie Morningstar, The Winds of War, and The Caine Mutiny—and eventually served as the basis for the celebrated Jimmy Buffett album and stage musical. “Funny [and] continuously entertaining. . . . Norman Paperman, although hardly an admirable person, is exceedingly human and entirely believable. One cringes with sympathy for him.” —The New York Times “His sandy beaches are alive with stinging sand flies . . . farce laced with tears.” —Time

Black notebooks by Niyi Afolabi,Marcio Barbosa,Esmeralda Ribeiro Pdf

"This bilingual volume brings together the first comprehensive compilation of Afro-Brazilian literature produced by the Quilombhoje group over three decades of their existence as a cultural and political movement in Brazil. Comparable to the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s and 1970s in the United States, Quilombhoje continues the tradition of the Quilombo, a communal sense of cultural resistance, survival and renewal assumed by descendants of Africans who refused to be enslaved. In producing poetry and prose through the Cadernos Negros series, contemporary Afro-Brazilian writers make a cogent statement against the stereotypical images of blackness while formulating a defiant and regenerative counter-discourse informed by Black pride, dignity, and Pan-African consciousness. Contributors include Cuti (Luiz Silva), Carlos de Assumpção, Geni Guimarães, Arnaldo Xavier, Miriam Alves, Abílio Ferreira, Márcio Barbosa, Jamu Minka, Conceição Evaristo, Esmeralda Ribeiro, Landê Onawale, Oliveira Silveira, Jônatas Conceição, Oswaldo de Camargo, Éle Semog, José Limeira, Cristiane Sobral, Waldemar Pereira, Thyko de Souza, Lepê Correia, Oubi Inaê Kibuko, Marcos Dias, and Alzira Rufino among others."--Page 4 of cover.
