Scripture and Cosmology by Kyle Greenwood Pdf

Christians often claim to hold a biblical worldview. But what about a biblical cosmos view? From the beginning of Genesis we encounter a vaulted dome above the earth, a "firmament," like the ceiling of a planetarium. Elsewhere we read of the earth sitting on pillars. What does the dome of heaven have to do with deep space? Even when the biblical language is clearly poetic, it seems to be funded by a very different understanding of how the cosmos is put together. As Kyle Greenwood shows, the language of the Bible is also that of the ancient Near Eastern palace, temple and hearth. There was no other way of thinking or speaking of earth and sky or the sun, moon and stars. But when the psalmist looked at the heavens, the delicate fingerwork of God, it evoked wonder. Even today it is astronomy and cosmology that invoke our awe and point toward the depths of divine mystery. Greenwood helps us see how the best Christian thinkers have viewed the cosmos in light of Scripture—and grappled with new understandings as science has advanced from Aristotle to Copernicus to Galileo and the galaxies of deep space. It's a compelling story that both illuminates the text of Scripture and helps us find our own place in the tradition of faithful Christian thinking and interpretation.

A Simple Model of Biblical Cosmology by F. Carlyle Stebner Pdf

This book presents a simple but controversial view of the creation of the universe. The Bible is the inerrant word of God, and what the Bible teaches should be the basis for any model of creation. Secular science does not agree, but all should study different theories and models, especially in a college and university setting where different points of view should be tolerated and encouraged rather than suppressed.

God's Two Books by Kenneth James Howell Pdf

This is an analysis of how 16th- and 17th-century astronomers and theologians in Northern Protestant Europe used science and religion to challenge and support one another. It argues that these schemes can solve the enduring problem of how theological interpretation and investigation interact.

The Biblical Cosmos by Robin A. Parry Pdf

Welcome to the weird and wonderful world of the Bible. When we read Scripture we often imagine that the world inhabited by the Bible's characters was much the same as our own. We would be wrong. The biblical world is an ancient world with a flat earth that stands at the center of the cosmos, and with a vast ocean in the sky, chaos dragons, mystical mountains, demonic deserts, an underground zone for the dead, stars that are sentient beings, and, if you travel upwards and through the doors in the solid dome of the sky, God's heaven--the heart of the universe. This book takes readers on a guided tour of the biblical cosmos with the goal of opening up the Bible in its ancient world. It then goes further and seeks to show how this very ancient biblical way of seeing the world is still revelatory and can speak God's word afresh into our own modern worlds.

Disturbing Revelation: Leo Strauss, Eric Voegelin, and the Bible by John J. Ranieri Pdf

"Ranieri shows how Leo Strauss and Eric Voegelin drew on biblical texts in their philosophies to explore the relationship between religion, politics, and violence while maintaining a deep ambivalence about the Bible's vision of life and its influence on politics and finally compares their thought with that of René Girard"--Provided by publisher.

Cosmology and New Testament Theology by Jonathan T. Pennington,Sean M. McDonough Pdf

For first-century people, cosmology was a fundamental part of their worldview. Whether it was the philosopher contemplating the perfection of the heavenly orbits, the farmer searching the sky for signs of when to plant his crops, or the desert-dwelling sectarian looking for the end of the world, the cosmos held an endless fascination and occupied a prominent place in their understanding of life. For most ancient peoples, cosmology and theology were inseparable. Thus, when the Jewish and Christian Scriptural traditions begin with the bold claim, "In the beginning God created the heavens and earth," these words make statements which are at once cosmogonic, cosmological, and theological. Scholarship has begun only recently to investigate more fully the various cosmological and cosmogonic traditions that were current in the time of the Old and New Testaments. Much of this work, however, has focused on how OT conceptions of the world compared to other Ancient Near Eastern traditions. Much less has been done on the cosmological traditions which stand behind the views of the NT writers. Even fewer works have sought to connect cosmological views with NT theology. In light of the great importance that cosmology had in ancient peoples' worldviews and theological understanding, a thorough investigation of this neglected topic is in order. Cosmology and New Testament Theology systematically examines the NT documents to show how cosmological language and concepts inform, interact with, and contribute to the specific theological emphases of the various NT books. In some NT books, the importance of cosmology can be easily discerned, while in others what is required is a new and close examination of key cosmological terms (e.g., heaven, earth, world, creation) with an eye to the themes and theology of the book.

The False Doctrine Of The Flat Earth by David Nikao Pdf

If you're a flat earther, have you studied the context of the verses which are being cited to proclaim that 'the Bible says flat earth'? This book goes through the 240 flat-earth verses that people like Nathan Roberts cite, to show you the proper context; because if you're promoting these verses, then you're accountable for the explanations. It gives a fresh perspective about the 'firmament' of Genesis; the 'circle' of Isaiah 40:22; the clay turned to the 'seal' in Job 38:13-14; the 'pillars' of 1 Samuel 2:8; the sun going forth in his 'circuit' of Psalms 19:6; and much more. If you know someone who believes that the Bible describes a domed, flat earth; I will help you understand their rationale in citing these verses. If you're a believer who's researching the flat earth, this book is critical for you. If you believe in the heliocentric universe, have you read what Moses, Job, David, and Isaiah; declared about the earth, the sun, and the stars? None of my pastors taught me what Scripture says about astronomy. The cosmology that's described in Scripture may surprise you. This book gives the context to see if Scripture describes a flat earth, a heliocentric globe earth universe or a geocentric globe earth universe. It's intellectually dishonest for people to not include the Tychonic geocentric globe earth model as an option in this discussion. Has the enemy created a false dichotomy, by making the debate only between the flat earth and the heliocentric globe earth? Satan is using the deception about the design of the universe and earth, to attack the authority of Scripture, to discount the Genesis creation narrative, and to promote the lie of evolution. This book is about much more than the flat earth debate. It's a Bible study which will open up your eyes and show you how the stars, which our Heavenly Father calls by name, are declaring the redemption plan of the set-apart. HalleluYah!

Cosmology and Eschatology in Jewish and Christian Apocalypticism by Yarbro Collins Pdf

This volume deals with Jewish and Christian apocalyptic texts and movements from the second century BCE through the fourth century CE. It focuses on two major themes, cosmology and eschatology; that is, views of structure of the universe including its religious function and interpretations of history and the future. The detailed historical and literary analysis of these themes are introduced by an essay on the cultural gap between the original contexts of these texts and those of readers today and how that gap may be bridged. The book deals with the interrelations between post-biblical Judaism and early Christianity. The relevant Jewish texts and history are discussed thoroughly in their own right. The Christian material is approached in a way which shows both its continuity with Jewish tradition and its distinctiveness.

The Biblical Cosmos Versus Modern Cosmology by David Presutta Pdf

Is the Bible the word of God? Because of the problems besetting mankind in this modern world, the answer to that question is of vital importance. If the Bible is not the word of God, it cannot provide, with any certainty, the perfect and absolute answers that its believers think it can. Moreover, for the true believer, belief in the Bible as the ultimate source of truth and knowledge overrides any meaningful consideration of the answers that other, and perhaps more suitable, views and sources of knowledge could provide. Such an outlook goes far beyond private belief, for many highly influential individuals use the Bible as an authoritative guide to determine what is valid today in science, government, and social policy, and numerous well-funded Bible-based groups are seeking to impose their beliefs on society, even to the point of turning this country into a repressive theocracy. Determining the answer to that question thus gains particular relevance. As it turns out, the answer can literally be found in the cosmos, for the cosmos that is revealed in the Bible is a fundamental aspect of the biblical worldview, just as the cosmos that science has revealed is a fundamental aspect of the modern worldview. In fact, the cosmos that is revealed in the Bible is an integral part of the narrative that unfolds in the Bible, so much so that the credibility of the Bible is dependent upon the validity of its cosmology. This book analyzes what the Bible has to say about the cosmos and shows how the biblical view of the cosmos compares to the modern view of the cosmos as defined by the findings of science. For those who are open to the evidence, this in-depth analysis of the biblical cosmos will provide a basis for arriving at a reasoned answer to the question of whether or not the Bible is the word of God.
