Excerpt from Bibliotheca Anglo-Judaica: A Bibliographical Guide to Anglo-Jewish History IN the following pages we have attempted to bring together the raw materials of the history Of the Jews in England, hitherto scattered among many thousand volumes or tracts, but some day, we hope, to be properly digested and suitably presented in artistic form. Our aim has been to prepare the way for this consummation, by arranging our materials in such a way as to make them most easily available for the students of anglo-jewish history - ii any such there be. We have accordingly classi fied the entries, and under each class we have arranged them alphabetically or chronologically, according as we considered either method of arrangement more suitable, letting uniformity give way to utility. As so much of the work is already arranged alphabetically, and so much else is anonymous, and as our immediate purpose is to subserve history rather than bibliography, an Index did not seem necessary. We have prefixed to the lists of books some account of the mss. Containing information on anglo-jewish history. Here we have been working on almost entirely virgin soil, which was scarcely even touched by the investigations connected with the late anglo-jewish Historical Exhibition. Where possible it has been our aim to give some short account of the contents of the various mss., so that the student may judge whether it is worth consultation. The bibliography itself is divided into three parts, deal ing respectively with the Pre-expulsion period up to 1290. Between 1830 and 1880, the Jewish community flourished in England. During this time, known as haskalah, or the Anglo-Jewish Enlightenment, Jewish women in England became the first Jewish women anywhere to publish novels, histories, periodicals, theological tracts, and conduct manuals. The Origin of the Modern Jewish Woman Writer analyzes this critical but forgotten period in the development of Jewish women's writing in relation to Victorian literary history, women's cultural history, and Jewish cultural history. Michael Galchinsky demonstrates that these women writers were the most widely recognized spokespersons for the haskalah. Their romances, some of which sold as well as novels by Dickens, argued for Jew's emancipation in the Victorian world and women's emancipation in the Jewish world.
The twelve essays in Romanticism/Judaica explore the four major cultural strands that have converged from the French Revolution to the present. The first section, Nationalism and Diasporeanism, contains essays on the diasporean mentality of the Romantics, Byron's attitude towards nationalism, and Polish immigrant Hyman Hurwitz's attempt to gain acceptance among the British by having Coleridge translate his Hebrew elegy for Princess Charlotte. Essays of the second section, Religion and Anti-Semitism, deal with the complexities of Jewish/Christian relations in the Romantic Period. In the third section, Individualism and Assimilationism, essays consider different ways the Jews were assimilated into the dominant culture, specifically through the theater, sports and and post-Enlightenment philosophy. Finally, the volume concludes with Criticism and Reflection: a revaluation of earlier scholarship on Anglo-Jewish literature; the establishment of Harold Fisch's covenantal hermeneutics as a model for reading Keats; and an analysis of Lionel Trilling, M. H. Abrams, Harold Bloom and Geoffrey Hartman in terms of their Jewish origins, suggesting the further implications for Romanticism as a field.
