Binding Phenomena by Waldemar A. Marmisollé,Dionisio Posadas Pdf

This book presents a unified description of binding equilibrium for a wide variety of systems focusing on acid-base and coordination chemistry, adsorption at interfaces, and electron binding in electrochemistry. It overviews more complex phenomena such as competitive binding to different sites and of different ligands. Multiple sites such as those occurring in macromolecules, colloidal oxides, humid substances, and proteins are briefly discussed and many experimental results for these types of systems are analyzed. Titrations and consideration of the distribution of binding constants are also presented. The book is mainly directed at undergraduate/graduate students of chemistry, biology, and earth sciences. It is supplementary to the standard physical and analytical chemistry courses and will help both students and teachers get a more in-depth knowledge and understanding of the systems analyzed.

Meaning, Context and Methodology by Sarah-Jane Conrad,Klaus Petrus Pdf

What methodological impact does Contextualism have on the philosophy of language? This collection sets out to provide some answers. The authors in this volume question three ultimately connected assumptions of the philosophy of language. The first assumption relates to the predominant status of referential semantics and its power to explain truth-conditional meaning. This assumption has come under attack by the context thesis and a number of papers pursue the question of whether this is justified. The second assumption gives priority to assertive sentences when considering language use. The context thesis changes our understanding of language use altogether; possible implications from this methodological shift are addressed in this volume. According to the third assumption, philosophical analysis amounts to nothing more than conceptual analysis. The context thesis risks undermining this project. Whether conceptual analysis can still be defended as a methodological tool is discussed in this volume.

Molecular Aspects of Membrane Phenomena by H.R. Kaback,H. Neurath,G.K. Radda,R. Schwyzer,W.R. Wiley Pdf

This book is a compilation of formal presentations made during a three-day invitational conference at Battelle Research Center in Seattle, Washington. The purpose of organizing and publishing the proceedings of the conference is to provide a comprehensive survey of present knowledge on the determinants of membrane structure, the molec ular specificity of membrane function, and the dynamic properties of membranes. Each presentation was followed by discussions which, be cause of their informal and spontaneous character, have not been in cluded in this publication. Molecular studies of biological membrane phenomena have progressed over the past decade to the point where it is now realistic to expect future resolution of the physico-chemical processes or forces governing the organization, function, and dynamic properties of membranes. Drs. Radda, Kaback, and Schwyzer, each presenting a different approach to the biochemical and biophysical study of membranes, devoted four to six weeks as Battelle Visiting Fellows to developing the format and the roster of participants of the conference. The scientific "cluster" concept for planning the conference is reflected in the breadth of topics presented in this publication.

Reversible Ligand Binding by Andrea Bellelli,Jannette Carey Pdf

Presents the physical background of ligand binding and instructs on how experiments should be designed and analyzed Reversible Ligand Binding: Theory and Experiment discusses the physical background of protein-ligand interactions—providing a comprehensive view of the various biochemical considerations that govern reversible, as well as irreversible, ligand binding. Special consideration is devoted to enzymology, a field usually treated separately from ligand binding, but actually governed by identical thermodynamic relationships. Attention is given to the design of the experiment, which aids in showing clear evidence of biochemical features that may otherwise escape notice. Classical experiments are reviewed in order to further highlight the importance of the design of the experiment. Overall, the book supplies students with the understanding that is necessary for interpreting ligand binding experiments, formulating plausible reaction schemes, and analyzing the data according to the chosen model(s). Topics covered include: theory of ligand binding to monomeric proteins; practical considerations and commonly encountered problems; oligomeric proteins with multiple binding sites; ligand binding kinetics; hemoglobin and its ligands; single-substrate enzymes and their inhibitors; two-substrate enzymes and their inhibitors; and rapid kinetic methods for studying enzyme reactions. Bridges theory of ligand binding and allostery with experiments Applies historical and physical insight to provide a clear understanding of ligand binding Written by a renowned author with long-standing research and teaching expertise in the area of ligand binding and allostery Based on FEBS Advanced Course lectures on the topic Reversible Ligand Binding: Theory and Experiment is an ideal text reference for students and scientists involved in biophysical chemistry, physical biochemistry, biophysics, molecular biology, protein engineering, drug design, pharmacology, physiology, biotechnology, and bioengineering.

Tied and Bound: a Comparative View on Manuscript Binding by Alessandro Bausi,Michael Friedrich Pdf

The present volume contains twelve chapters authored by specialists of Asian, African and European manuscript cultures reflecting on the cohesion of written artefacts, particularly manuscripts. Assuming that 'codicological units' exist in every manuscript culture and that they are usually composed of discrete elements (such as clay tablets, papyrus sheets, bamboo slips, parchment bifolios, palm leaves), the issue of the cohesion of the constituents is a general one. The volume presents a series of case studies on devices and strategies adopted to achieve this cohesion by manuscript cultures distant in space (from China to West Africa) and time (from the third millennium bce to the present). This comparative view provides the frame for the understanding of a phenomenon that appears to be of essential importance for the study of the structure of written artefacts. Regardless of the way in which cohesion is realised, all strategies and devices that allow the constituents to be kept together are subsumed under the term 'binding'. Thus, it is possible to highlight similarities, convergences, and unique physical and technical methods adopted by various manuscript cultures to face a common challenge.

Biology of the Uterus by Ralph Wynn Pdf

In the decade following the publication of the first edition of Cellular Biology of the Uterus, advances in this field have been so rapid as to require not merely a revision of the earlier text but an essentially new volume. Even the title of the book has been changed, to Biology of the Uterus, to reflect the incorporation of more material based on classical anatomy and physiology. This histological and embryological information provides a necessary, though often lacking, background for the protein chemist and molecular biologist, and a bridge between biochemistry and biophysics, on the one hand, and clinical medicine, on the other. Thus, major practical problems in human reproduction, such as the mode of action of contraceptive agents and the cause of the initiation of labor, may be approached on a firm scientific footing. This text deals primarily with the biology of the uterus itself (comparative and human) rather than with placentation or pregnancy, and as such is a synthesis of data derived from many techniques, conventional and modern. Inasmuch as it is clearly beyond the competence of anyone scientist to prepare such a text on the basis of personal knowledge and experience, the aid of distinguished biologists from this country and abroad was enlisted. All of these authors, acknowledged experts in their respective fields, agreed to extensive revision of their chapters or preparation of entirely new contributions.

Inclusion Phenomena and Molecular Recognition by J. Atwood Pdf

The Fifth International Symposium on Inclusion Phenomena and Molecular Recognition was held September 18-23, 1988 at Orange Beach, Alabama. This followed previous very successful symposia in Warsaw (1980), Parma (1982), Tokyo (1984), and Lancaster (1986). The overall tone of the event at Orange Beach was expressed elegantly by Fraser Stoddart at the close of his lecture: "At a meeting like this, I think we should be asking ourselves more openly where we have come from and where we are going to. I am certainly willing to put my head on the block. Chemistry, as I see it, is entering a golden age of opportunity and those of us here who respond to the multidisciplinary challenge of the subject will perhaps start the movement to reunite the chemical sciences for the fIrst time in more than a century. Given the recognition granted through Charles Pedersen, Donald Cram, and Jean-Marie Lehn to our field from Stockholm last year, there are many here who are surely poised - if they have not already done so - to capture the academic high ground and intellectual leadership of our subject. And what is more - it will be on the back of our fundamental science that many of the exciting technological advances of the twenty-first century will be forged. " In order to capture the flavor and excitement of the symposium, herein we present reviews by thirty-eight of the invited lecturers. The program was shaped by the Program Committee: Jerry L. Atwood, Richard A.

Theoretical Immunology, Part Two by Alan S. Perelson Pdf

Assuming that the complex phenomena underlying the operation of the immune system may be better understood through the collaborative efforts of theorists and experimentalists viewing the same phenomena in different ways, the Sante Fe Institute and the Theoretical Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory cosponsored a workshop entitled "Theoretical Immunology." The workshop focused on themes spanning the field of immunology, with emphasis on areas where the theorists have made the most progress. This book covers the discussions a that workshop on the topics of immune surveillance, mathematical models of HIV infection, complexities of antigen-antibody systems, immune suppression and tolerance, and idiotypie networks. In each of these areas there is reason to believe that advances can be made either through interactions among experimentalists and theorists or through the critical look experimentalists and theorists will bring to bear upon one another's work.
