Biological Risk Factors for Psychosocial Disorders by European Network on Longitudinal Studies on Individual Development Pdf

It has been known for many years that physical disease or damage, especially of the brain, is associated with an increased risk for psychosocial disorders. However, the understanding of the mechanisms involved in these biological risk processes, and of the marked individual differences in response, is of much more recent origin. The role of genetic factors, perinatal brain damage, sex hormones, allergy, drugs, and language disorder, are among the topics reviewed by this book's expert contributors. Papers were selected to illustrate the wide range of mechanisms involved in the development of psychosocial disorders in childhood or later life. Authors were asked to write for a multidisciplinary audience, to adopt a lifespan approach, to focus on the principles involved, and to highlight the outstanding research and clinical issues in each field.

The Prefrontal Cortex: Its Structure, Function and Pathology by J.P.C. de Bruin,M.A. Corner,M.G.P. Feenstra,C.G. Van Eden,H.B.M. Uylings Pdf

Thanks to a resurgence of interest and a recent proliferation of research techniques, much new and illuminating data has emerged during the last decade relating to the prefrontal cortex, particularly in primates and rodents. In view of this progress, the 16th International Summer School of Brain Research was held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands from 28 August to 1 September 1989, devoted to the topic of `The Prefrontal Cortex: Its Structure, Function and Pathology'. The edited proceedings, embodied in this 85th volume of `Progress in Brain Research', fall into three sections - the first of which, following two introductory chapters, discusses the present knowledge of the organization of prefrontal cortical systems. In the second section, developmental and plasticity aspects in rodent and human cortex are considered, whilst the third section deals extensively with the functional aspects characteristic for the prefrontal cortex in primates, rats and rabbits. The last section reviews several topics on dysfunction of prefrontal cortex in rat and man, including a historical review on psychosurgery.

Use of Mechanistic Information in Risk Assessment by Hermann M. Bolt,Björn Hellman,Lennart Dencker Pdf

M. Pliftski Institute of Oceanography, GdaJisk University 46 Pilsudskiego Av. 81-378 Gdynia, Poland 2 The Baltic Sea with 366,000 km is only 0. 1% of the world's oceans but nevertheless, unique in many ways. The Baltic Sea is the largest area of brackish water in the world. As a formation of nature, it is a sea that in many ways resembles a lake. This makes its flora and fauna interesting and well adapted to the brackish water environment. The recent stage of biocoenosis composition is influenced by several features. Historically, during the last glaciation, when the Baltic was sometimes a huge marine bay and sometimes a large, freshwater lake, several ecosystems developed and were successively replaced. The flora and fauna composition of those previous biocoenosis was discovered from the geological layers corresponding to the Yoldic Sea, the Ancylus Lake and the Littorina Sea periods. Recently the marine influence has come from the North Sea water inflow, which greatly affects the salinity of the deep water. The freshwater influence comes from the fluvial water which gives the surface layer a lower salinity value. Salinity in the Baltic regions varies greatly - Gulf of Bothnia 2-4%0, the central Baltic proper 7-13%0, the Kattegat 15-300/00 in the surface water and 32- 34%0 in the bottom water, the Skagerrak 20-300/00 in the surface and 32-35%0 in the bottom water.

The Visually Responsive Neuron by T.P. Hicks,S. Molotchnikoff,T. Ono Pdf

This timely new volume presents broad-based and wide-ranging contributions on all aspects of vision. The material is grouped for presentation in a logical fashion in five main themes: peripheral processing; sensory integration in superior colliculus; organization of visual projections; development and plasticity; and neuronal encoding and visually guided behavior. The material spans from molecules to cognition, including overt behavior, and synaptic and membrane levels of analysis. The species studied also range over diverse phyla, while contributors too form a diverse group representing Europe, North America, and Asia. The Visually Responsive Neuron is an exciting and informative addition to the well known Progress in Brain Research series.

Neurobiology of Ischemic Brain Damage by K. Kogure,K.-A. Hossmann,B. Siesjö Pdf

In the eight years since the publication of Volume 63 of Progress in Brain Research, on this subject, developments in the research field have been very fast. For example, receptor physiology and pharmacology is now an intensively studied field, and the excitotoxic hypothesis of cell death is commonly accepted. Furthermore, it is recognized that ischemia and other insults give rise to a sustained depression of overall protein synthesis, yet lead to the expression of dormant genes and to synthesis of new proteins. In view of this development, this volume focusses on the cellular and molecular aspects of ischemic brain damage. The book will be of great value to all those interested in the pathophysiology of ischemic and traumatic brain damage.

Circumventricular Organs and Brain Fluid Environment by Armin Ermisch,Rainer Landgraf,Hans-Joachim Rühle Pdf

This volume provides a picture of the state of the art and of the perspectives opened by new powerful approaches to the study of the structure and function of "Circumventricular Organs" (CVOs). Studies on the CVOs reflected in this book comprise many aspects, from cellular elements to the whole organism: the accessibility of these organs for chemical signals, signal (ligand)-receptor interactions, the transfer of information to distinct brain regions, the effects induced in these brain regions and the influence on the regulation of body functions including autonomic and behavioral alterations. Some of these aspects strongly depend upon the microenvironment of the cells involved in this cascade of events. Therefore, the brain fluid environment in its broadest sense is a central focus. This excellent work is therefore an up-to-date report on interdisciplinary approaches and concepts, offering new insights into the complex phenomena of brain function, and shows directions in which to proceed.
