Biographical Record of the Alumni and Non-Graduates of Amherst College, Vol. 2 by W. L. Montague Pdf

Excerpt from Biographical Record of the Alumni and Non-Graduates of Amherst College, Vol. 2: Classes '72-'96; 1871 1896 Errors will undoubtedly be found, although the greatest care has been taken to render the record accurate. Isome already noticed have been corrected in the supplement. Information received while the work was in press up to the date of Oct. 23, 1901, has also been inserted in the supplement. Probably nine-tenths of the statements have been taken directly from the returns, but even these may err, as conflicting dates have been given at different times. After writ ing for correction in some instances and receiving the reply Wis dom comes with age, the last is the correct date, the editor has usually accepted the last report. In some instances where no return has been received, the occupation, places and dates have been taken from the annual list of addresses published by the college. The arrangement adopted in the first volume has been followed in the second, making the report as brief as possible, avoiding all eulogies and stating the simple facts of each life without comment. The same general order has been followed in giving the record of each alumnus and non - graduate. 1. His personal history before entering college. 2. His professional or business life, including both the study and practice of his profession with the facts arranged chronologically as far as possible. 3. Official positions held, books or pamphlets published, and honorary degrees received. 4. The death of deceased members, marriage and number of children. The Selected Papers of Jane Addams by Jane Addams Pdf

In 1889 an unknown but determined Jane Addams arrived in the immigrant-burdened, politically corrupt, and environmentally challenged Chicago with a vision for achieving a more secure, satisfying, and hopeful life for all. Eleven years later, her “scheme,” as she called it, had become Hull-House and stood as the template for the creation of the American settlement house movement while Addams’s writings and speeches attracted a growing audience to her ideas and work. The third volume in this acclaimed series documents Addams’s creation of Hull-House and her rise to worldwide fame as the acknowledged female leader of progressive reform. It also provides evidence of her growing commitment to pacifism. Here we see Addams, a force of thought, action, and commitment, forming lasting relationships with her Hull-House neighbors and the Chicago community of civic, political, and social leaders, even as she matured as an organizer, leader, and fund-raiser, and as a sought-after speaker, and writer. The papers reveal her positions on reform challenges while illuminating her strategies, successes, and responses to failures. At the same time, the collection brings to light Addams’s private life. Letters and other documents trace how many of her Hull-House and reform alliances evolved into deep, lasting friendships and also explore the challenges she faced as her role in her own family life became more complex. Fully annotated and packed with illustrations, The Selected Papers of Jane Addams, Volume 3 is a portrait of a woman as she changed—and as she changed history.

Frank Lloyd Wright : The Early Years : Progressivism : Aesthetics : Cities by Donald Leslie Johnson Pdf

Frank Lloyd Wright : The Early Years : Progressivism : Aesthetics : Cities examines Wright's belief that all aspects of human life must embrace and celebrate an aesthetic experience that would thereby lead to necessary social reforms. Inherent in the theory was a belief that reform of nineteenth-century gluttony should include a contemporary interpretation of its material presence, its bulk and space, its architectural landscape. This book analyzes Wright's innovative, profound theory of architecture that drew upon geometry and notions of pure design and the indigenous as put into practice. It outlines the design methodology that he applied to domestic and non-domestic buildings and presents reasons for the recognition of two Wright Styles and a Wright School. The book also studies how his design method was applied to city planning and implications of historical and theoretical contexts of the period that surely influenced all of Wright's community and city planning.
